1. I understand that you may be more comfortable with Shotokan katas and longer stances but if you wanna add another Passai to your arsenal , I would recommend a tomari Passai from Matsubayashi Shorin-ryu. it is a real deal . this kata is well documented. Watch this video and the two guests from Okinawa. @ 1:46 watch Ikihara doing the tomari Passai, these people are amazing in hitting with their body not just punch and kicks. a more formal version is the one Rika Osami of Shito-ryu does. Shorin-Ryu: Shito-Ryu:
2. here is a good article on Passai kata and it is great that you look into the origin of the forms you practice in TKD/TSD. https://www.ikigaiway.com/2014/making-sense-of-passai-an-exploration-of-origin-and-style/
3. there are times that you need to stop the class and explain something. during this time normally class stops and the students listen to you. on average, how many minutes per hour you stop your class. have you seen an instructor talks more than half of the class time while students are just standing? I like to keep the class going all the time if I stop the class it would be less than 30 sec just to show the right way, I don't tell stories or three different analogies to prove a point , to me it is unnecessary.
4. Your link is worse. if you think that is worse , then watch this one. the first link you posted was very technical and clean ,you can hope for a trophy . the second link is pure budo , focus and power . that man is a legend .i am not a fan of Shotokan style but I have most respect for men like Kanazawa. the third link i posted is a Okinawan version from Tomari village one of the birth places of Karate and as you can see the third one is even less technical, even sloppy. I enjoy all of them . [/img]
5. if your Goju is Japanese version then i would take only one of them. if your Goju is Okinawan version then i take both and i would use my learning from Wing chun in my Goju. i practice Okinawan Shorin ryu and Goju ryu and when i have doubts about a technique i always try to find the root of that technique in Crane or Tiger.
6. My deepest condolences my shorinkan brother. I was in a seminar with Kyoshi Bethea and Riley yesterday and as soon as he came in and gathered everybody he mentioned sensei Poage's passing. You are in our thoughts.
7. if We look at the history of Karate , most of the Shotokan katas are variations of Shorin ryu katas with Japanese influence. I have practiced both styles and I see Shotokan katas more in the sport side of the spectrum. if you try to practice Shotokan kata with CQC in mind you get the Shorin-ryu kata again. In kata competitions, Shotokan kata like Unsu is being used in final rounds all the time.
8. if you like competing while you can , then you should move on to that direction. keep in mind that Shotokan has over 20 katas that you have to learn besides the Kumite that you are interested in. I think you should talk to your sensei and tell him you wanna compete in kumite and ask for his help. you don't have to change the style or dojo . go to local tournaments and try. you will learn a lot and you meet the younger and the stronger without going through 26 more katas.
9. I couldn't understand your question. if you are from Japan then you need to be a member of JKA to participate in a WKF tournament. a WKF competitor is a world level karate-ka and a JKA member is a national level karate-ka. JKA has won 188 medals in WKF tournaments way more than USA with 35. so in average a JKA member should be better than average WKF competitor.
10. your video clip was nicely done. could you post a clip of your Passai kata?
11. thanks for the inputs, i shouldn't have replied at all. two days later i had two fire Marshals at my door , they had received anonymous complain that our company doesn't have a contingency plan on file. after i gave them a copy they apologized and left. some people really have mental issues.
12. I like Rika Usami's sensei , Yoshimi Inoue. He is great teacher.
13. Anan Dai is a made up kata for tournaments so you can't find that much bunkai for it. if you are interested in self defense then stick to the foot work of the original rendition of Anan by Sakumoto. if you are interested in tournaments then make your own bunkai .
14. recently I received a email at my business from a person who i have never done a business with. I found part of the email insulting and i replied back as i thought fit. I want you to read these two emails and let me if I was overboard in my reply. the man is dragging the matter. here is the original email i received : Subject: Dip not Deep To whom it may concern, And it should concern someone. In your overall description on the cost of chrome-plating you state; The customer thinks all you need to do is deep the piece. It's Dip, I point this out only cause it demonstrates and shows a complete lack of attention to detail. Signed; A Lost Customer. my reply : Mr xxxxx, thank you for your input , I forwarded the email to the party responsible. Also, I can't find any reference to your name in our emails or logs. if you are our customer and for any reason unhappy, please let us know , We would gladly address your concerns. if you just landed on our website from a search engine trying to learn something and never used our service, please don't sign as "A Lost Customer".I point this out only cause it demonstrates and shows a complete lack of attention to detail. Regards, Alex what do you think, was my answer out of proportion by repeating his own words?
15. i don't think that you are a college student , it sounds like a cheap way of gathering marketing information. a survey cost you less that 50c each through Amazon.com. how much you saving? $50? somebody delete this survey.
16. Shorin Ryu is the general name for most of okinawan karate styles coming from Shuri area , so shorin ryu styles are Shuri-te. Shorinkan is one of the styles ( organizations) under Kobayashi ( Chosen Chibana style) . Shuri-te >>> Shorin ryu >>>> Kobayashi Ryu (Chibana-ha)>>> Shorinkan (Nakazato). as for the weapons, Shorinkan uses Matayoshi kobudo as well as Yamanni Kobudo. in contrast some of the shorin ryu styles don't practice weapons officially.
17. We had a shorinkan seminar at sensei Ray Owle's dojo yesterday. I am not exactly a shorinkan member but my kobayashi shorin ryu was close enough to do all the katas with them. Kyoshi Charlie Dean was there leading the class and everybody had the chance to express his/her opinion in technical details. i picked up at least two fine notes from Naihanchi Shodan and Kusanku Dai. if we have enough Okinawan shuri-te practitioners from Houston we could meet and enjoy practicing katas together once a year.
18. Tsuguo Sakumoto doing Anan kata in 1988 world championship.
19. I was a student of sensei Ray Keller and also later on I practiced with Deborah Douglas. I really liked sensei Keller. a month before he passed We been doing white crane kata with Sensei Lindsey. he wanted to come back to Houston and start teaching again. Sensei Deborah Douglas lost interest due to some politics inside shorinkan she stopped teaching around 2008. at the moment there is no shorinkan dojo inside Houston area and the closest you can find is Sensei Ray Owl in Perland and Sensei Dean in Montgomery.
20. this is a very interesting subject , if i understood correctly , i like your stepping better. let's say Zenkutsu dachi is 70/30 , you can't just appear in zenkutsu dachi unless you stomp your front foot and weight into the stance, i think of body mechanic and i don't like to step like that. in zenkutsu dachi the knee comes over the big toe so seems more natural to put the ball of foot down then the knee moves forward and down for its final position. one of my shorin ryu teachers says "step like you' rolling a rice grain under your foot". could you explain the way your teacher wants you to step and the weight transition.
21. I don't think that you had a question , this is your video after all. if you want my opinion as a member of this board i can give you my 2 cents. I watched it and it is very good but it is not exactly about concepts. to me a concept is more general. like jamming into an attack. what your hands do is not important it is your technique but the concept is timing. you can use the same concept in kendo , your technique is different but the concept of time and distance is the same. when I watch your video , i look at your foot work , body change , time , positions these are the concepts what you do with a punch or kick is a continuation of these concepts. when i teach(which i don't anymore), i start from self defense but i limit the techniques to the ones in the same kata i am about to teach. you teach a class from white belt to black belt so you have to focus on one kata at a time. if the class is private for black belts then you can expand to all the katas. good luck in your training.
22. my dojo is the wood floor of my house. the door frames are my makiwara. weight training includes push ups , Sanchin kata, Tensho kata and pulling a 60 lbs longbow. I hope somebody opens a traditional dojo in Bellaire,TX. i 'll be the first to join.
23. In all my years of training I have only stayed with a commercial dojo for 2 months anybody else I train with has a day time job.
24. My shorin ryu sensei started his karate with sensei farhad varasteh in early 70s. I think sensei varasteh passed away last year. I guss his daughter is the head of kanzen ryu now a days. I have tried too many styles from free style wrestling to tkd , judo and juijutsu. My most experience is with kobayashi shorin ryu . I also practice a blend of white crane karate . I love all kind of martal arts and I read the history of these arts . I hope you enjoy your time in kanzan ryu or any other style you endedup with.
25. Hello sensei I live in houston, I practice alone mostly as I can't find a dojo around me. I practic with shorin ryu shorinkan group in houston once a month and with sensei Ron Lindsey every other month.
