one more thing, make sure he is really there teaching, in some schools you never see the sensei. i left one school just becuse of that . now some schools have real good , solid high rank students that you can learn from ,i guess you have to go a stay with them for a while. hey good luck , i like to learn a little bit kenpo too.
-
i've seen it too, they are real , somebody who hits ,also needs to know sanchin ,so he strike in a right time,

thanks for sharing your ideas.

again this is not about sparring , no weapons no life/death situation ,not about "no first attack in karate", imagine you are on a beach and somehow get involove in a fight ,very simple . thanks for the answers ,as i could see most of you will attack first, but still i feel confident to accept an attack , one thing we may wanna discuse is the chance for the attacker and defender? when you attackt you are ahead as far as time but you are also more open . the only situation that i may attack first is that my opponent shows some moves and i realize he is trained, other wise i love it if someone intiates a jumping front kick as someone sugested here, or someone throw a wide street punch so my strategy is still accepting a first attack. how do you think your MA affecting this? for example I really don't think so that a Thai boxer wait ,there is no wait in Muai Thai , from other hand a Aikido guy most likely will wait for the attack, what do you think?

What kind of details you have in your dojo/…
P.A.L posted a topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This is just for becoming more familiar with other customs beside out style. 1-line up: in shindo jenin ryu we stand from higher rank in the left ,first line black belts there are some other people on the side perpendicular to lines that I don’t wanna get into that in shorin ryu we stand from higher rank on the right side 2- for sitting down first right knee down ,for standing up left leg up first. 3- for bow while sitting, first left hand then right hand and reverse you come up. I think Okinawan do most of the things opposite of Japanese way. I like to know especially about kenpo people and Korean arts. I was told to understand the details always imagine a samurai ,all the details are designed in such a way that make it difficult for a sword man to draw his sword.(a right handed samurai) while the sword man also is prepared not to be attacked by surprise. any more info on this regard? -
Why did you start your martial art?
P.A.L replied to The Saint's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Karate , i wrote a long stroy about how i jumped from window with an umbrella and how it affected my MA. but i pushed a wrong key and lost all of it, i really feel tired beacuse of this. good day before i lose this one too. -
This is neither about sparring nor a life/death situation, it’s about a normal confrontation on a street or stadium without any weapons involve. do you initiate the attack or you wait for counter, in my karate (I am not talking about my style) I will wait for a attack or I fake a attack in order to receive a real attack , if the timing be ok I will accept the attack otherwise I refuse it and wait for the next one. Now this is my mentality I just can not imagine myself initiating a real attack. What is your mentality for this kind of situation? Is the MA style we practice affecting this or it is just personal?

I know ,i was kidding , first time i get a chance ,i will drop in your dojo, you are also wellcome to come over to see our shorin-ryu and white crane style.

Shorin Ryu vs Goju Ryu
P.A.L replied to Dark Shogun's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I quote from Yuchoku Higa who been trained in both Goju-ryu and shorin-ryu , sensei Miyagi personally corrected his goju katas as a family friend and also been a student of shiroma (student of Itosu)and miyahira(student of kiyuna Pechin student of Matsumura) This is from Mark Bishop book “Okinawan Karate “He says : “shorin ryu was originally named by anko itosu not choshin chibana, and is a natural style like walking along a road” he believes that both goju ryu and shorin ryu have strong points .shorin has natural stances which allows for free movements but does not have the knee kick of goju ryu or circular blocks later he criticize the weight training of goju ….. I think both shorin and goju are hard and soft styles , for example in shorin ryu Your opponent comes in for a long punch to middle part of your body, 1- you may use a outside inside block using your ki without reaction hand which believe me can damage the opponent hand and turns his body and same hand strikes with middle augmented block to the temple 2- using white crane ,you turn to “L” stance both hands come out high(linear) palms toward your face the rear hand deflect the punch slightly ,now rear hand grabs the wrist and leading hand strike the near eye, in shorin they say “ kick under , punch over the opponent hands” one thing I like about the goju block is the palm direction , they are toward the opponent and can easily grab after blocking and pulls in. in shorin open hand middle block the palm is inward and after you have to push down by forearm while turning the palm down for a grab. One thing about shorin people misunderstood is stances , the lowest stance we have is shiko dachi which only use for grappling rest of it is high natural stance in different angels. Shorin has nothing to do with shotokan and IMHO sensei funakoshi really killed the essence of okinawan karate by changing the katas. -
I hope you know the rules of challenging a karate dojo, you have to start from lowest rank all the way up and by the time you get to the high ranks they know all your moves and most likely can defeat you, but if you win them all including sensei you can keep the dojo. in general if you fight a sporty version of karate you will be ok. if you fighting a traditional karate-ka just watch your kick and punches, do not over extend your punches and be low and chamber back in your kicks other wise you'll be traped in a lock. if you fighting a kyokushin guy watch for the mawashi on your head and leg and hard punches to solar plexus. good luck

MissG , good post . nothing to worry about . my stance is almost the same mybe hands a little bit higher like Motobu-ha style in close range , in kicking rang I bring my lead hand down so it won't block my vision.

Help! People dissing other dojos....
P.A.L replied to KarateChick06's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
kill the man, marry the wife, end of story. -
the only part that makes me worry is your knee ,rest of it is just muscle and will be ok, if your skin is dark red because of internal bleeding it will starts to clear up after a week or so. but check your knee .if you had your weight on your leg at that moment it could have been transfered to the knee. there are lots of pressure points there and the worst one i think is about 3" above the knee on the same line you got hit.
-
as Nick said it depend ,this is what I do 1-shoulder wide on the fist x20 2-open hand fingers of two hands towards each other shoulder wide x10 3- narrow , make a triangle between tumbs and fingers x10 4- shoulder wide on the fingers x10 and i am carfull not pull a muscle in chest area by some creazy positions . i also workout my forearm and fingers with one of these "V" shape springs , while driving.

it is safe we say karate is %70 hand and %30 kicks. if you really like high kicks the best for you is korean versions of karate. kuk sul won (spl?) could be a good choice.have a look to the Korean arts section too.

Angela, Mark bishop in his book says something in this line but he seems to be very biassed infavor of shuri-te, I don't believe that japanise never done a study about this ,i am gonna go and do some research about shime in medical papers.
-
you mainly can find this in real traditional okinawan karate, every thing but the high kick, all of them have the elements of white crane and Chin-na(spl?). shifting, soft blocking/controling/belending in, striking pressure points, setting up a lock, final blow using body mass is common in all of them either from Naha-te(Goju family) or shuri-te(most but not all of shorin styles),IMHO these are good choices not as sport but as fighting systemswithout order -okinawan goju ryu -Matsumura seito shorin -kobayashi shorin-ryu -white crane family styles (Hakutsuro[spl]?) some styles that are effective and more available are kyokushin kempo (i like to bring kempo in,so hold it) Now, the first group are not sporty, and sometimes seems violent even in dojo practice level ,thats why many of them spar rarely or with protection gears. kyukoshin does full contact but there is no punch from neck and up. they KO with kick to the head or solar pluex or leg and of course punch to the body. if you want something safe i would say Shotokan karate is well rounded/effective/organized these are 4 major Jap. karate styles 1- shotokan 2-shito ryu( mix of shorin-goju) 3- wado ryu (mix of all karate and jujutsu) 4- kyukoshin and you need to know, sometimes good masters don't even have a Ad. they may have a small dojo in their garage, you just need to find them. go to dojos and talk to sensei or high level students, get free lessons and feel them it not the style ,it is mostly you and your sensei who makes a difference.

I am agree with Ant, humiliating someone is the last thing i may do in a fight.

you gotta promot yourself to 10th dan , then make a video and send it to one of these sokeship companies with your money order, they will send you a recognition certificate ,put it on the wall and do a interview with "black belt " magazine. don't forget to contact "black belts hall of fame" then send letters to other sokes, give them Dan and get some Dan from them, here we go ,you are set. PS: you need to make some menjos for promotions. and don't leave your stamp with anybody in any time.
