His Naihanchi is probably close to Motobu , pinan katas is close to Itosu(creator of Pinan series)/chibana Chinto looks like Tomari Chinto but I am not sure. Kusanku should be close to Kyan version (Kyan learnt Kusanku from Chatan yara) Chapter six: Kumite Author talks about importance of Kumite and pre-arrange Kumite All 7 pre-arrange kumite of the style Yakusoku I to VII are explained. Chapter Seven: Kobujutsu This chapter cover weaponry of Matsubayashi ryu , it’s very short and only talks about weapons which are used in the style. doesn't matter. the way we do our kata if you are not a karate-ka you won't even see the block since block becomes a strike at the end of it even before the real strike starts in next tempo. but still it has been designed with a defensive strategy behind it. having a defensive strategy doesn't mean to hang around, you may think defensively but still attack first to create a better situation for your plans. kick/punch kick/punch kick/punch still a $50 million dollars tank is Vulnerable to TOW missile. you initiating an attack doesn't mean that you can continue the attack after the first engagement. this doesn't mean that you should get nerves and start throwing punches. it may not be good enough. you practice 6 hours a week , hundreds of times your sempi attacks you and you counter attack him, still you think no matter what whoever attack first should win the fight. you are either a off shoot of Naha-te or shuri-te . if you are Naha-te and block soft still times will come that you have to accept a blow for any reason (time/position)during a fight. that's the time you have to rely on your conditioning. if you are a shuri-te not only the first reason but also your blocking should be stronger than your opponent attack. i have received hard blocks on my punches from high level shuri masters ,it has nothing less than a punch. this only possible by conditioning.you don't wanna get hit on your shin for the very first time in a real fight. Most of you heard about the famous fight between choki Mutobo and the professional boxer , all the documents shows that he was the shorter, lighter, older of two, and that he did not win the fight by attacking, he won by a single block/strike in a defensive position. He could jump around do some kick/punch or pre emptive attack but he was just shifting and blocking before his last counter attack (probably a Ippon Ken Zuki) all i am saying is ,if we practice a defensive art like karate why not planning our fights defensively.

I posted this in karate section and I was hoping to see more defensive strategist. We practice karate right? We go to dojo practice kata and wazas some of us spar some not but kata and waza is the main part. Now kata is defensive set of movements ,starts with a block and end with a block/strike In okinawan karate you still can see the offensive looks of defensive blocks but in Japanese version everything just looks good and they have to make it effective by bringing the concept of “oyo” as a alteration of “Bunkai”. then in waza , attacker comes in with different technique. we practice our counter attacks to disable an attacker over and over thousands of times. so what’s the reason that every body comes in the first thing they say is that if fight is inevitable then they attack first ,why do you think whoever attacked first has a better chance. I presented Aikido as another defensive art but some didn’t get it. I only saw one more person with a defensive counter attack strategy. I think if you practice 6 hours a week on a defensive art then you should have more fate on the ideas behind it otherwise it means we didn’t get the art, just like a Aikido practitioner tell us that he attacks first if he knows the opponent going to attack, this means he forgot all his training got nerves and acts on his instinct. Kicking/punching part of karate doesn’t make it offensive it is still a defensive art the only thing is to understand how to be defensive and successful. If you block an attack in one tempo and go for punch/kick in next tempo then yes you better attack first since you been late and behind in tempo just like chess. If we block with rear hand the leading hand has to do the striking in the same time. If we block with leading hand it has to be continued and extended to become a strike. Other aspect I wanna talk about is conditioning , for a good karate ka strong abdomen/forearm/shin is a must. Unfortunately I rarely see a bone on bone conditioning , I have seen people after one year conditioning can block a bo strike efficiently. this is a part we have to do in every session of our practice. I am not a expert in any way but I do have fate in defensive strategy of karate when it’s done right.

so far okinawan stand from right to left and jap. styles from left to right. -
so there is a siezing/controlling part in karate. tuite(chin na) been there for a long time but it is seems to be forgotten now a days , if we look deeper and take these narrow sighted glasses of styles off we do see the similarity between Aikido and karate.

you can't find this one cheap , maybe around $60 in ebay , then you have your shipping, also Higaonna 's book in goju is a expensive one. why don't you try a cheaper one to start. like this one, he is the son of "Cat" and head of USA Goju kai i guess. The Fundamentals of Goju-Ryu Karate by Gosei Yamaguchi

injuries rate is higher but it's a real fun. it is not deep but it's effective, they are probebly one of the few who can compite with thai boxers.
-
True but not the main reason, keeping forearm in a angle(like 45) compare to horizontal gives your block more upward power by engaging other series of muscles. You can apply some force with you other hand and see yourself and upward angle goes faster and stronger compare to horizontal forearm, I have seen it in some styles that two hands cross each other in close to 90 degree angle, bad technique. Imagine you are already in right hand age uke, so your left is on your side, both hands come toward your chest and cross each other , your right would be inside and left which is gonna do the block is the outside one, both palm/fist toward your face, this is the start point rest of it was said before.
-
sorry i was wrong karate has nothing to do with Aikido. lets go back to our Karate. step in down block ,reverse punch , front snap kick with front leg. Ich , Ni, San ,Chi ....
-
i don't see much difference between Aikido and karate.
-
Cross , what do you think about Aikido?
-
Cross , it seems in your karate a block is a block and punch is a punch. in my version , my block is a strike and a punch is a block. if you think this way ,being defensive may make more sense.
-
Pers, you are right. hopefully we all get there one day. what i like to say is , a defensive strategy based on setting traps/counter strike has nothing less than offensive strategy based on initiating an attack. of course karate is not defensive as Aikido , we learn to initiate too but still IMHO traditional okinwan karate is in favour of defensive strategy. somebody kicks you if you are a offensive person ,you won't accept the attack so you may wanna dis engage and come back for your turn or you may block hard, dis-engage and come back to attack, a difensive person may accept the attack and move into the kick hard or blend in with kick and go for a lock.....

Shorin Ryu vs Goju Ryu
P.A.L replied to Dark Shogun's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
the problem is history,it is not very clear since it was not documented ,it seems shuri te started by Sakugawa but there is not much about his teacher (takahara?) or beside Kusanku kata that is said to had been created by sakugawa there are lots of other old advanced kata without origin ,now some of them are related to Matsumura but there are more, to my best knowledge shuri-te been heaveily affected by Tomari-te i think origin of many katas like chinto or wankan goes to tomari, these are some people compeletely out of Matsumura lineage ,some masters like Anan or oyadomari are the creator of some advanced which are a part of shuri-te now a days, now some katas are common between all of them like Anan betwwn shuri and Naha-te or the most famouse Seisan that you can find it almost every where with the same core but look different. so if you gonna look into shuri te go search on Matsumura(Bushi) lineage and white crane karate also tomari te (search on Anan,Oyadomari, kosaku Matsumora) , now how about Naha-te? how clear is Naha-te before Higaonna? -
after intro. class march back to your computer and keep us posted.
