Well interesteing question . since I am not a shotokan student i do not know why Funakoshi changed the names I do know that most fo the okinawan names were either numbers or named after the person who broght over or created the kata . For example empi in shotokan is wanshu in the okinawan styles . The same is for kanku which is kushanku ( japanese pronounced it kosokun ) However i could see where it would make sence to name the kata after the movements such as gankaku . I guess this is one of those questions that people will be answering for the next 100 years. Sorry i couldent help .

Well as we all know lthere are many different styles . Shotokan was developed by funakoshi gichin from okinawan karate. There is alos Okinawan kempo which also use kata liek the pinan's and the nihanchi , but also have many different one on one mini kata i guess is what you would call them very quick and to the point soem say they came from china (shaolin boxing ) wee pratice an okinawan styel of kempo called katsu ryu . Hope this helps to expand the confusion .

Well the longest kata that i know right now is proably kosokun dai (kushanku , kanku) . other then that one i belfve the longest is proably hakutsura or pechurin.
-
Hakutsuri is a shuri (shorin ryu ) kata . It is really long proably the longest i have ever seen lots of crain type movement s hence the name i guess huh . I also like seiuchin and shisochin both are really good kata seiuchin really pulls the energy out of you .

Well yes i know thsi is an Okinawan kata and some people may wonder since im a shodan why im aksing aobut it. Well im a Shi-to ryu styylist and i love researcing kata. Thsi seems to be a very rare kata and a very high kata . My sensei who has been studing around 30 years jsut learned Hakucho . and does not know this one yet I was jsut wondering if any of the great minds here might have some information on this awsome kata I have only seen a very few people run this kata.

Well i rememeber i took a bout a 4 or 5 year break well i was inthe army so i didnt stop training . However being out of a true school for a while you will tend to secod guess yourself especially when you dont have contact whith anyone in that same style . When i finally got back I went to my Sensei asked to start agin in the beginers class . When i left i too was a ikkyu (1st kyu) so i jsut came in and puyt on my old white belt untill i felt that it was ok to put the brown belt back on . That is what i would suggest .

Well im not sure andchin is done all in sanchin dachi . in seisan you step foward 3 times wiht double chudan uke (middle blocks then you alternate wiht a very fast chudanzuki on each coraspnding foot after the 3rd punch you ahve a double open hand chudan uke then a double nukite to floating ribbs 3 times etc... san chin you step foward 3 times wiht morate chudan uke and punches as well as turn and etc... i wont describe the whole kata but both are naha kata (goju) seisan also has several hanyoko geri (side kicks to the knee) _________________ Karate is not a sport , it is a way of life . Well I am not much of a tourniment person . I am a student of shi-to ryu but i have seen wado ryu kata and they are very good . I dont think you should be looking for a style based on tourniment kata you should pratice kata for your self . However this is just my opinion (you know what they say about opinions ) . Please dont choose a style based on how the kata looks at a tourniment. There are to many styles out there now that base there whole system on tourniment and miss the true focus on what karate shoud be about . I hope this helps you on your quest in the martial art's.

What's the difference between Speedchucks and Nunchucks?
ronryu replied to Che Guevara's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Speed chucks are more of an hollywood invention . Traditional nunchukas are wood with a cord holding them together . people started adding chains and making them out of metal later on . However I am a traditional martial artist so thsi is why I favor the wooden nunchuka . everyone has to choose shich path they wish to follow . -
I have heard of chito ryu and yoshikai. but i belive they are 2 seperate styles ?

we do not do very high sice kicks . the way i pratice a side kick is the way i was taught it which is to the knee.the best way tat i practice it is standing in yoi (normal ready position) bringning knee up high then rotating the hips with the kick out at a 45 degree angle . this to me is the most effective kick you can feel the devestiating power in it . Yes the supporting foot will turn. I study a traditional style and we do not have any kata hta has a kick past the belt hight.
-
Yes i am a shodan however i have also been praticing for 17 yrs . I have moved around so and so have not had the opurtunity to be in a class setting my whole martialarts life. i have been running Chinto for about 3 yrs now. I am not writing this to anger anyone however i am upset in soemones response when they know nothing about me .

if you are talking about the nukite (like pinan shodan) i do those ot the lower abdomen or the groin . If your talking about hte moves like in pinan yondan and kosokun (kushanku) where one hand comes by the eye brow and the other hand does a shuto strike i do those as either a block and strike to the throt or as a catching punch and strike to the elbow of the attacker . hope this helps .
-
Well i caint speak for others but i know after 17 years of Karatedo i would'nt work out in anything except a heavyweight gi . i prefer toyo or tokaido . there is nothing like a good heavy gi .

geki sai dia ich and ni are goju kata however shorin ryu do a version of geki sai dai ich but they call it fukigata ni . they were created in hopes of uniting the okinawan styles and give them all a basic kata that are alike . i am not sure about the firs name mintioned. Hopes this helps .

Martial Arts which incorporate weapons?
ronryu replied to Ahazmaksya's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
There is a big kobudo influnce in shi-to ryu we start students with basic kobudo bo kata at around rokyu (6th kyu ) . there was a big influnce from Taiera Shinkin . and we work mainly bo , tonfa , nunchaku , sia , kama in that order usally . -
I am a student of shi-to ryu and we useally start with the taikyokyu then tenno (fukigata ichi) and then chino (fukigata ni , gekisia dia ichi )but we do not teach small children . the youngst we will start is about 12 . we do have a few kyhon floor exercies that we also teach befor going into kata .

I am familar with the ten hands translation . I am also told that it could mean temple hands if it is in line with the other 2 sister kata jion temple sound , ji'in temple ground . These 3 kata all start with the right fist in the left palm as a monk greeting . (chinese ?) . hope this helps these 3 kata are some of my favorite .
-
I am familar withthe 3kata type techniques. However we do not actulally throw the sia . I do not know of anyone selling the sia in 3's .However ido know of some one who does sell throwing sia . http://www.weaponsconnection.com Maybe that will help with your search .

There are many differnt styles of kobudo . Which has already been mentioned in this thread . There are also many different styles of kenjitsu which is traditional japanese sword . the kobudo i study is ryukyu kobudo in motobu ha shi-to ryu . we study the following Bo Sia tonfa nunchaku kama My sensei also studies tenshin ryu kenjutisu .

im not big into sparing however the only time i find myself kicking with the front leg is if im in a neko ashi dachi (cat stance) the rest of the time its either a backfist reverse punch or a front kick . i can only think of a few kata off hand that have a front leg kickin them such as pinan shodan , kosokun dai , and both of those are out of cat stsnce .
-
well idont know much about the american kempo howeveri study an okinawan kenpo called katsu ryu kenpo.they are like one on one kata with a lot of over kill in them but they are packed with different techniques . the best self defense tactics ive seen .

In the system i study motobu ha shi-to ryu karet we use the following belt sys. white 8th kyu hachikyu purple 7th kyu sichikyu blue 6th kyu rokyu green 5th kyu gokyu green 4th kyu yonkyu brown 3rd kyu sankyu brown 2nd kyu nikyu brown 1st kyu ikkyu However i do know of people that we used to ba ssociated with that change the purple and blue belt ranks to yellow and orange after the split of the orgnization. nkju / seishinkan (after Soke Kuniba Shogo's death ) . I also belive that in the Okinawan / Jaopanese styles the only person alowed to wear a red belt is a 9th or 10th dan
