In Shito ryu we do them as taisho (plam heel ) strikes . I dont think i have seen it run as shutos but that could be a bunkai application .
-
Just wondering those of you who pracitice Shisochin kata how do you bunkai the first three spearhands . In the kata when you strike chudan level wiht the spearhand would you strike the solor plexis or to the throat ? As a side note I have been running this kata for about 3 years now and wihtout a doubt it has become my favorate does anyone elese feel this way ?

There are a few diferences one is the kata . Shotokan only has a few kata taht are simaler to Goju ryu i.e. Hangetsu is the goju fersion of seisan . Also goju focuses more on conditiong the body at least this is just my opinon im sure soem people will disagree with me . But to be honest no matter what style you study there are only so many ways to do a low block . find the style that best suites you and go wiht it . I practice Shito ryu and plan to keep studing this style . Hope this helps a little .

any and all suggestions are welcome i dont think there is much differance between the shi to ryu version and the shotokan version. Im trying to jump off thefroont leg but haveing proablems getting around to land straight .

I recently learned this kata and as im sure most of you who know it may have had the same problem . How do you do the big jump turn . I enjoy the kata but that one move is giving me alot of trouble .

Shi to ryu is the combanation of two styles Shuri te (shorin ryu) and naha te (goju ryu) as was mentioned in a previous reply it was taught as two different styles and even today you will see the naha te kata taught to higher ranks . There is no way anyone can keep all of the vast kata of Shi to ryu we have a set of required kata about 25 or so to shodan not including kobudo kata which also is incorprated heavley into shi to ryu . You will learn many more then that but after you start your own dojo up it is up to you to decide the most important kata to you . Remarkably most people keep the same required kata tenno chinno pinan 1-5 matsukaze (wankan) nihanchi 1-3 seiunchin shisochin bassai dai kosokun dai (kushanku/kanku) saifa seisan sochin chinto sanseiryu sanchin wanshu these are the ones that i try to run on a regular basias. hope this helps .

I am famialer wiht the kata Annan . It is mainly a Ryuie ryu kata but haiyashi ha Shi to ryu runs this kata aswell due to the fact that Teru haiyashi was one of the first people outside the family to train in this art. It is a very nice kata you cna get video tapes wiht it on them at https://www.dragon-tsunami.org. Hope this helps .

Well there are also a few different versions Sanchin kata. There is higashionna (higionna) sanchin, miyagi sanchin wich are simalar wiht the exception that miyagi sanchin is like tensho 3 steps foward then 3 back . higashonna sanchin is 3 steps foward turn 3 back and turn 1 foward but the punch and blocks are jsut aabout the same . then you also have the uechi ryu sanchin which is like the hiagashonna version wiht the exception it is donw with open hands and you also have a shito ryu version which has elbows in it . Man thats alot of sanchins huh ? However there all jsut about the same wiht middle blocks and punches. however in different styles the breathing is done differently . most goju schools do it really heavy and in shito ryu we do the heavy breathing but not the real dynamic tension. and so on and so on . so afeter that my question is what version of sanchin do you do .

I weill repet my prevous statement in traditional karate there are no high kicks . yes there is a cresent kick done chudan but that is not really a kick it is bunkai'd as a stomp or a load for a side kick to the knee. Even Funokoshi did not like high kicks just look at him doing kata or read his books it was his son that brought high flashy kicks into the system for tourniment reasons . Funokoshi was even aginst sport karate. Agin this is just my opinon if im close enough to kick some one in the head im not going to take one foot off the ground and risk the chance of being taken down it makes more sense to me to to use my hands or kick to the groin or knee .

for Shodan in our dojo we require all kata to that rank which is about 20 or so empty hand kata and then the kobudo kata taht you would know about 5 kobudo kata . also about 15 okinawan kempo as well as all bunkai and meanings of all kata empty hand and kobudo . You would have to also do a written test which has questions about the history of the style founders deffenations etc... A normal test for shodan is aobut 4 hours.

I dont really belive in kicking high , and I use to take taekwondo aswell but I prefer traditional Okinawan karate and in the traditional kata there no kicks over belt knot height . Side kicks are done to the knee . I know some styles that say they are traditional and have changed the kata by adding the high kicks but myself I dont see the reason for it . _________________ Karate is not a sport , it is a way of life . In the Dojo wehre i work out there are 4 godan's(5th degree) 1 yondan (4thdegree) , 1 sandan (3degree thats me ) and 1 shodan ( 1st degree) . thats it for the yudansha . we have 1 gokyu and 1 nikyu taht come sometimes and that is it for the class. Which is kind of sad that Sensei is a rokudan (7th degree) . I ahve studied wiht him for almost 18 years and most of the other students have been with him for 20 + years . we ahve a hard time getting or keeping students in a traditional school we work out in a place wiht nmo ac or heat but it is the best training I have every experianced .

well we dont really call them grandmasters. but it woudl be Soke Motobu Choki , Soke Kokuba Kosei , and Soke kuniba Shogo

i was born in the year fo the dog ..1970

the style that choki motobu 's son is teaching is a called motobu ryu the style that Choki's older brother and family style is called motobu uden i belive thats right . Shi-to ryu is more of a blend of goju ryu and shorin ryu . Kenwa Mabuni who is the founder of ****o ryu studied under several great master the 2 most tha most influenced him was Itosu anko and higashionna. that is where we get thename shi-to ryu shi being the first kanji of itosus name and to being the first kanji for Higashionna. that is the reason taht Shi-to ryu has so many kata .

well here we go . I disagree and here is why . We did an exparament a while back to see which one went father and an oizuki (lunge punch ) like the one in taikyokyu shodan . you can travel around 6 to 7 feet wiht lots of power I have never seen a kick travel that far wiht power also youkeep your balance since both feet are on the ground . I dont care what people asy if you hve one foot on the ground and one up in the air trying to kick ome one in the head you are off ballance . Im not just speaking from a traditional okinawan martial artist but i also have a red belt in taekwondo which i do not pratice anymore. But this is just my opinion and yoiu know what they say about opinions.

Choki Motobu did pratice several kata but the one he considered the bes was the nihanchi (tekki) kata. I study the motobu version of ****o ryu so we incorparate the shuri , naha , and tomori kata to list a few . Tenno Chinno Pinan 1-5 Nihanchi 1-3 wankan Wanshu kosokun dai and sho bassai dai and sho chinto seisan seiuchin sanchin shisochin and there several others including kobudo kata we also do severl kempo that were passed on from choki Motobu .
-
I study Motobu ha shi-to ryu which is from Choki Motobu the leniage goes Choki Motobu , Kokuba Kosei . Kuniba Shogo . However Choki did have a son who is teaching the more pure style of his father he has even relesed a tape showing the nihanchi kata of his father. http://www.dragon-tsunami.org is where the tape can be found i have it and it is very good as well as it straightens out some facts about the great master Choki Motobu .

In shi-to ryu Kobudo is part of the syllabus. At about rokyu (6th kyu blue belt in our style) we will start teaching the bo . Then form there one would move on to tonfa , nunchaku , sia , adn kama at differnent ranks keeping iin mind that the kama are not taught till shodan level. hope this helps. _________________ Karate is not a sport , it is a way of life . Well I caint help with all the questions but on the one about shorei ryu and shorin ryu . Shorei ryu is the old name of naha te (goju ryu ) shorin ryu is of hte shuri part of okinawa while shorei ryu is from the naha part of okinawa the differences are shorin ryu is more up in the stances and snapier in there techinques while shorei (naha) use deeper stances as well as the now famous sanchin type breathing . As far as kempo and kenpo they are pertty much the same just different pronuncation . However there didfferent styles of kempo such as american and okinawan . hope this helps .

I only did the 2 day seminar and the kata compatition it was an awsome experance. luckly i live near atlanta so i didnt have to pay for a hotel . there were well over 3000 people attending the event .

I had the honor in 2001 to attend the rengokai in atlatna ga. I was wondering if anyone knew if and when it might be held in the states agin . I know it is being held in haha city Okinawa this year. I would love to attend it agin the seminars were outstanding wiht such masters like hanshi Shugoro Nakazoto and hanshi Morio Higionna . It is an event I would encourage any traditional japanese or okinawan karate ka to attend .
