  1. Shorin ryu and Goju ryu are 2 of the main styles on Okinawa. Shorin ryu being more straight foward and more upright stances. Shorin ryu comes form the Shuri te style of early okinawan karate it also has influences from Tomori te. Naha te uses deep breathing and cresent like stepping as well as alot of close in fighting. The styels influenced by Naha te are styles like Goju ryu, Uechi ryu, and Shito ryu. hope this helps.
  2. Thank you for all of your replys. I am starting to lean towards not doing an organization right now due to I have sevealr students taht want to cross test for rank from shotokan to shito ryu. With the new orginazation dan ranks are rarther high $100 per dan rank some of these guys are sandan now it just dosent seem right to have to pay $300 for a piece of papper to hang on the wall.
  3. I was a part of the Kita kaze bujutsu kai . before that we were part of the international karate kobudo union and befor that national karate jujutsu union and befor that seishinkai. as you can see there have been several splits mainly due to the founder dieing or the new soke changing things not compatiable to the origanal teachings. the organization that the organization i s merging into is the chikubukai. I have checked wiht the other orginazations and could not find a rep or school near my location or they were to expensive.
  4. What is your opinion on governing orginazations from a school stand point. recently the organization that i was a part of has merged wiht anotther that i have questions about. I am a traditional shito ryu stylist of about 20 or so years and currently a sandan. I have looked into other organizations but they are either too expesive or the nearest dojo is several states away. so back to the question. Does it help to be a part of one of the organizations or do people even care.
  5. from most of the groups I have seen it is useally $25 to $45 for kyu ranks and useally at least $100 per dan rank ie $100 for shodan $200 for nidan and so on.
  6. Well I would suggest if you can't find a Tae Kwon Do school you like maybe look at a shotokan. The original forms were from shotokan they are almost identical.
  7. This question is mainly for those who do the traditional Okinawan and Japanese kaobudo styles. What is your favorite Kobudo kata? I just learned Hama Higa no sai so as of right now it and Hama higa no tonfa are my favorite.

    Kata List

well lets see. Tenno Chino Pinan 1-5 Nihanchi 1-3 Matsukaze Ananku Rohai Seiunchin Jutte Jion Jiin Sanchin Shisochin Seisan Sanseiryu Bassai Dai/sho Tomori Bassai Kosokun dai/sho Sochin Unshu Tensho Seipei Kururunfa Nipeipo Niseishi Anan Chinto Gojushiho Superempei Wansu Thats all i can think of off the top of my head.
  9. in most of the Okinawan versions of the Pinan I have never seen the jump done. I have seen a few Shito ryu people do it mainly the ones with a shotokan background. it jsut adds a little flash to the kata. to me the more basic it is the more sence it makes. Just my opinion.
  10. Yes Ripper we do the Pinan kata. In Pinan godan we do not do the jump like in the Heian kata we jsut do a turn and then the kosa uke (cross block)
  11. I have wondered about this aswell. the only kata I know of that has the jump kicks in them are Kosokun dai, Chinto, Superempi, I have seen the shotokan unsu that has the jumpspin cresent but in the Shito ryu version that does not apper. I useally bunkai these as either 2 front kicks or it works really well if you have some one charging in on you and do the jump front kick as soon as you come up it with your knee to get up it stops them. othere then that I dont see much use for them.
  12. What is kata? Well that is a good question so here is my 2cents wort. Kata is not only a series of movements put together as a dance or as if you are fighting someone. it is also the history of the style. That is why you will find so many different versions of the same kata. This is why at lest in my opinion you should learn the names of the people who created the kata or at lest where it comes from. There is much more to a kata then just a set of movements.
  13. I recently got a new belt. Fro years I ahve jsut worn a plain black belt no kanji. However for some odd reason I decided to have kanji put on this one I have just about always seen yudansha with the yellow thread on there belts but I decided to get red. I have gotten a few looks but no one has said anything . Anyway I have been doing this a long time so who cares. I do however still find myself jsut wearing the plain balck belt. I guess I really just hate new belts.
  14. I love the Toyo gi's https://www.dojowear.com

Well that is hard to say when you first start in karate and are taught a kata you are told where to kiai. however after you have been doing it for many years you will find yourself kiai'ing in different places. In my opinion certian moves and places in kata will pull the kiai out of you. In other words just let it happen.

    Fav Kata

wow that is a hard question I would have to say Shisochin right now but I also love the shito ryu sochin aswell as chinto.
  24. Whitematt, I do not argue that there are some good martial artist in the ATA. I have studied several styles and to me the ATA just seemed empty to me. I am proably a little biased due to the fact that I had trained in traditional Okinawan and Japanese styles for several years before wotrking out with the ATA people. I just never felt the sense of history and in its place it just seemed so money driven. I would like to see more of there upper belts know how to apply there forms (kata) I asked several of them how to apply that move to a person and none of them had a clue and this is from 5th and 6th degree black belts. This is only my opinion. I do not wish to start any arguments jsut stating what I have observed. I have also seen the same thing in some shotokan and other so called traditional schools. Its all in how you train.
  25. Yes juroku was created by Mabuni Kenwa who is the founder of shito ryu.
