  1. The ten no we do is the same as fukagata ich like the shorin styles. and then Chi no is liek fukagata ni or geki sai dia ichi.
  2. If you want to learn true swordmanship with a katana you need to find a kenjutsu school. however most Aikido/Aikijutsu schools teach iaido or some type of kenjutsu since those schools come form the sword arts.
  3. Most shuri type styles do thise kata as well as ji'in most of the shorin ryu styles run them .
  4. The ATA is a bussiness I was associated with them for a ver short time it is pretty much pay and get your belt type of place. I do however give them props on being a business they are a million dollar company and know how to market to kids.
  5. For some reason Shito ryu kata's are hard to find on the web here is a site that has some of them listed however I have yet to see a mpeg or video of Chi no or Ten no. https://www.hkshitoryu.com

    Tensho Kata

I currently do not know this kata but have seen it run several times as well as some of the 5th dan's in the class know it. I have studied the history of it a little and know it was created by Miyagi Chojun. and is actually taken form the white crane system much like siafa. I have seen people including Higaonna Morio do it with the hard sanchin type breathing as well as the softer breathing. I look foward to one day learning this kata.
  7. I teach 6 taikyoku kata for white belts. It takes about 6 months to test for there first belt. Yes I know that the taikyoku kata are not shito ryu kata but it makes it alot easer to teach the more complex kata after they have taken some time to work on the taikyoku. Yes they are my sin.
  8. I study Shito ryu and currently I pracitice 3 versions of the Sanchin kata higaonna sanchin, miyagi sanchin, and sanchin dai. I will useally start student wiht the ibuki breathing around 4th kyu and teach sanchin around 3rd kyu .
  9. I will quote Hanshi Higaonna Morio "only true sanchin is in sanchin kata"
  10. I pay my sensei 50 a month but I am only able to work out with him maybe 2 times a month. I currently help teach at a full time Dojo and I believe they charge 60 a month but they are open 6 day a week. I live jsut south of Atlanta Ga. and I have seen schools in that area charge over 100 a month for jsut 2 or 3 classses a week .
  11. Shito ryu is a very well based system with the proper blend of naha te and shuri te. Of course im going to defend it cause ive been doing it for aver 20 years. Yes Shito ryu has alot of kata but you do not requir all of those kata for promotion. The way I see it is after you have been practising for several years you h ave a core set of kata. For instence I have a set of around 8 to 10 kata that I will do every time I workout. As a teacher when I come across a person who seems like they may be able to run or enjoy a paticular kata more then I do, I will teach it to them so that it will not be lost in time liek some other kata have. This is just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions.
  12. I have toyo , tokaido and a kamakaze . I prefer the toyo gi's they last a long time . the last toyo I had lasted 8 years.
  13. I have a student that will be moving to the beaver county Pa. area. I am looking for a Shito ryu school that she may be able to attend . Any information would be helpfull .
  14. I belive that most styles will say that seisan is one of the oldest kata. Hangetsu is a modified version of the shuri seisan that funakoshi created much like he modified the Pinan into the heian. I do know of a kata that Kuniba Shogo created just for fun at a clinic he was conducting . He just made it up on the spot , I belive to humble some new yudansha who were asking him to teach an old kata. Anyway he called it Gi sake Sho . When asked about the meaning he pointed to his gi then said sake ichiban (#1) and laughed. There are still some people who run this kata .
  15. What style of karate id it from I may know which one you are talking about .
  16. Yes I know of this kata . It is also known as Wankan . It is known as matsukaze in most Shito ryu dojo . I enjoy this kata it flows really well . as far as sites with a video of it im not sure you can try . https://www.hkshitoryu.com
  17. I voted kama but my fav. is the tonfa Hama Higa no tonfa is my fav. tonfa kata it realls pulls the ki out of you .
  18. I am looking for some sites wher i may be able to order some japanese and okinawan decoration for a shinza and dojo .
  19. Well we were doing blocking drills low block to low block with a partner and we got carried away after a long day and I hit to low and it snaped. But it didnt hurt as much as i would have thought a broken bone would have.
  20. well this is an embarasing thing to admit butr here it goes . while doing some blocking drills fo some conditiong something that I have been doing for 18 yrs . I got a little carried away I guess and broke my arm while doing the low blocks . The sad thing i thought i had just tore some nerves or froged a muscle and kept on with class did'nt figure i had broke it till I gotr home a few hours latter . Live and learn , huh thats the great thing about Karate no matter how long you study something will happen that makes you realize how much more you have to learn . Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else or if you will admit to it .
  21. I to am a Shi-to ryu stylist and have found no sites with mpegs or any other form of recording of the kata on the net . However most of the naha (gojo) kata look almost the same . To me Rohai is the most gracefull kata of them all very elagent .
  22. I have always used a straight bo and from everything I have read the traditional bo was straight for instane the wrist flip (cutting)motion found in alot of the kata seems to work best with a straight bo . I believe the tapered bo is a more resent inovation to make the bo lighter for tourniment's . but this is just my humble opinion

    Goju Ryu

From all the research ive seen just about all the Okinawan styles were influnced from the chinese systems . Shorin ryu was also influnced by the white crane style jsut look at there highest kata Hakutsura which is white crane. Also ive read and have had the honor of attending a clinic conducted by Morio Higiaonna and he to states that the goju stykle is influenced by both the white crane and tiger styles . Hope this helps but it sounds like youve got it down.
  24. I only know of 2 nunchaku kata . Tairia sho and ni . Both are from Tairia Shinken .
