ronryu replied to Joecooke007's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
alot of true ninjitsu sensei's stoped calling it ninjitsu i know that bud malstorm has a dojo in atlanta and i belive he calls it bujinkan not sure but i know he does not call it ninjitsu . i also belive that steven k. hayes calls his art by another name as well . those are the 2 big names that i remember from the big ninja carze in the 80's . -
I have not however my sensei and severla other students from my dojo do study tenshin ryu kenjitsu from lavery sensei. I have not started due to the fact taht i feel i need to work more on my karate befor startiang a different style .

Well i enjoy learning the way different okinawan/japanese styles do kata ie....shorinryu , goju ryu etc.... but im not really into goingin outside the traditional system such as i have taken taekwondo but i do not pratice it anymore i stick just to the traditional okinawan styles ... I also love learning the ways different sttyles bunaki the same kata.

well let me share a news story that happened here in atlanta when a kid killed another kid getting off of a bus by hitting him in the base fo the skull . You hve to belive in your traning and the technique . remember these movement were created in a time when you defended yourself or you died .
-
one hit one kill techniques do work jsut think for a moment if you hit some one in the base of the skull or the throght . just look and some of the kempo or even the bunkai to the kata these techniques arent jsut stuff made up they were created during a time when self defense was a matter of life or death . the thing is to know when to use the right amount of force and when not to .

Thank you for your information the chinto that we preform is the tomori chinto it has no cran stances in it and is done in an dianangle pattern . it does have several cat stances and diffacult turns in it . we also do the shuri verison which is more like the shotokan gankaku . with the crain stances. i am very interested in any other information you can grant .
-
In Shi-to ryu we do a kata called chinto (in shotokan it is called gunkaku) . I have researched this kata a little and have found that there are 3 versions the itosu type done in a straight line another type done in a left to right pattern and the one that i do tomori type done in a diangle. pattern . i was wondering if anyone has any other information or knowledge of this amazing kata.

wel the one hit one kill principle is throughout Japanese martial arts ie... kenjitsu (sword) in that art it is taught that if both men die upon the single strike it is still honurable. Also in karate you want to end the conflict as fast as possable . As they used to tell me in the army one shot one kill !
-
Yes that is the way i feel when i run kata as well you want to reach a type of moveing meditation . However it is not an easy thing to do sometimes i will still catch myself if im angery running the kata really powerful but not proper . But i will get there one day .

A kiai is a very powerful tool if used corectly and it takes years to master the art . agin i say art , it is jsut taht it is not just a yell it is focusing your energy so that it travels through and out of your body.

The stongest punching and kicking techniques are!!!
ronryu replied to ramcalgary's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think the most powerful and deceptive technique would have to be the oi zuki (lunge punch like in taikyokyu shodan . even though im a studnet of shi-to ryu karate we do the taekyokyu's as kiyon kata . if done proaperly this punch is almost unstopable in my view. -
yes sanchin is a very complex kata when you break it down . it means 3 balltes or conflicts . that could mean mind body and spirt , or head torso and leggs (if you look at the dynamics of the kata , leggs tight breathing correct head straight ) I enjoy this kata very much even thought im toatly spent after running it .
-
from what ive seen most goju ryu do the sanchin kata with closed fist . However in Uechi ryu they do it with open hands . there are a few kata that are done wiht open hands like shisochin , seiuchin , and im sure there are others that im missing right at the moment .
-
I am familer with the weapon but i have not used it the only other place i have seen them advertised is at http://www.weaponsconnection.com however all of his weapons are hand mace and are failry expensive but worth the extra price good luck with the training .
-
Well i guess the main differece between the shi-to ryu version of the naha kata and the goju ryu version of naha kata ,is the we do the breating just not as heavy as in goju .everything is still tense and you should still be able to take a punch in the gut with out to much discomfort. in the goju version of sanchin they also use dynamic tension where the arms, stomuch , legs everything is tight , on the exhails as well as the inhails that is the diffacult part it is a very hard kata to master even though the paterrn and techniques are fairly simple.
-
we in motobu ha shi-to ryu are taught aswell to turn on the ball of the foot however the foot still stays as flat as possable and toes grip the floor .
-
i enjoy working wihtthe bo aswell . i like tokamine no kun . I also know and enjoy tenryu no kun and ryube bo . those are the only bo kata i know curently .
-
i study Shi to ryu and we do a verison of sanchin but i also had the opertunity to learn miyagi sanchin and higiaonna sanchin the deifference is in miyagi sanchin you take 3 steps foward and 3 steps straight back . in higiaonna sanchin you take 3 steps foward then turn 3 steps back then tun and 1 step foward and 2 steps back .

Without a doubt i love stories about the old masters . Since i study motobu ha shi-to ryu i like the stories about choki motobu he was a very impresive and awsome martial artist. I also love exploring the history of the kata they are a story in themselves. So much history is writen in each movement .

The Tekkis (Nihanchi) are really good kata aswell lost of good bunkai in them . For me tekki ni and san I have a tempo proablem i cna run sho all out but i have to slow ni and san down a lot which is a good thing my sensei is always tellig me to slow down . But sometimes the kata jsut takes control of you . can anyone elese relate to this ?

I am looking for a way to lower my body fat percentage . I am 5ft5 177 lbs . in farely good shape work out karate wise about 4 times a week and do not eat alot but can not get the percentage down any ideas. MY workouts useally consist of pushups situps jumping jacks then basics and kata .
-
My background is also in Shi-to ryu (Motobu ha) and yes it is a misture of both goju (naha) and shorin ryu styles do the naha kata as well as the shorin kata . however we dont really do it quite as hard as the true goju people do . I recently had the honur of trainign wiht sensei Higiaonna Morio at the 2001 Okinawan rengokai here in atlanta and found it to be a very interesting style . it is good to see the variations of kata from diferent styles (traditional ones of course) I caint help with the kickboxing sorry but i hope this helps .
-
Well some people get it and some don't and that is fine however i belive the less traditional styles are missing the whole art of martial arts . we still do very painful blocking drills and the stances do more then you think . they condition the body and let youlearn where your center of gravity is at and how to break some one elese's . But as i said to each his on . I am jsut disappointed that some people miss out on what a kata can offer .
