Welcome. I'm moving this to the introductions forum.
-
Since Aikido is not really considered a "combative" art, and we don't have an Aikido forum, I'm moving this to General in hopes of your getting a better response.

Are you really learning to defend yourself?
SBN Doug replied to broomhilda000's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Also, in arts like Kuk Sool Won and Hapkido, if you go full speed from the beginning, you'll break something on your partner. They haven't learned to fall properly yet, to minimize injury from a full speed technique. -
Judo vs Your Style
SBN Doug replied to broomhilda000's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Be careful, threads getting too close to a "which one would win" discussion will be closed. -
My only issue with strength training, is that too many people do it wrong for the MAs. If you lift slow and strong, because you started with a lot of weight, then you teach your muscles to move slow and strong. If you start off lighter, and make sure you keep the speed, then work up to heavier weights, also without reducing speed, then you'll have the advantage of the strength training without sacraficing speed. In any case, I'm moving this to health and fitness, as these type topics are throughout that forum.

Do you mean other than the Headquarter's one? You know this one exists, right? It has links to all the school sites. https://www.kuksoolwon.com Masters (Mr. and Mrs.) Harmon do have one, it's shared by the Clear Lake and FM1960 dojangs that they run. http://ourworld.cs.com/kuksoolcl/

"Well, I ain't seen my baby since the night before last." I usually have a Sam light at dinner. Up to three on a weekend night at home. I don't go out with the intention of getting drunk anymore. Past that phase I guess. I will get a little to buzzed if out for a long time with a group, but I always keep it to a point where I'm fully in control. Unless I'm sitty at home sippin' on some Yeungling's. ZR, I hope I stop getting so many chances to use this line.
-
Yeah, I don't want to hear any weather people talking about drought for at least 3 years. Nothing much to do but sit around and sip on an ice cold Yeungling's.

We had the school master's daughter and another girl learning the Korean ones back at my first dojang. They were using three, one in front and one on each side. They were so cute whipping around in circles.
-
Actually, you should start your own thread in here, so we can all say hi to you.

True, but the face is a dangerous place to be hit, esspecially if you catch him leaning into it by accident. I ususally target the forehead (when sparring) when I would normally target the face in a real fight.

bjj for self defense
SBN Doug replied to aznkarateboi's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Now you know what the TKDists feel like, trying to explain the difference between their "sport" and "self defense" training. -
That's quite a history thus far. Sounds funny saying you moved from Texas to Idaho and studied KSW, only because the Grandmaster and many of the higher masters are in Texas. Welcome to the forums.
-
Yeah, when sparring across arts, everybody needs to agree upon which rules, if any, will be observed. I can't imagine he wouldn't want to include head strikes in that kind of environment, esspecially withbig gloves. Are you guys wearing head gear too? I could understand not wanting face strikes, but nothing to the head????

I saw it, at least.

I can definately agree with the majority of what he's saying, but I think I agree more with what I interpret him to mean. The few forms we practice aren't a good training tool until you can practice ALL parts of it. The part I think he's saying partly wrong, but the intent I agree with, is if forms will help in a fight. I agree that you can't just start going through your form in a fight, and expect to win. I also agree that even, in some cases, performing the techniques the way they're done in the form won't help you win. However, I do believe when you practice ALL the aspects of a form, , it will help you in a fight IMHO. Good quote in any case.

bjj for self defense
SBN Doug replied to aznkarateboi's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Don't let BJJ's dominance on the ground make you think it can't be used standing up, because it can. Besides, as already stated, it's probably the reason this school teached MT as well, to make up for any weaknesses in the standing techniques. Combine them both, and you'll be well equiped. -
Welcome to KFs. Don't let anyone else's opinions dampen your enthusiasm. It sounds like you like it and are comfortable, and that's all that matters.

I don't think it's that dumb a question. The practicality of using a sword, etc., is a viable quandy. As for myself, I like to study weapons partially for the fun, and partially for the selfish reason of being able to say I know how. There are, however, a number of weapons that a still quite practical even today. The cane, rope (or belt), staff, short sticks to name a few are all easily utilized in a real life situation. As for the sword....it's just fun.

Tae Kwon Do in the UFC
SBN Doug replied to superfighter's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
If I remember the participants correctly; If your question is, has then been a high level, pure TKD, practicioner in UFC, then no. If your question is, has then been someone with some amount of TKD training in the UFC, then yes. -
German Shepards are also great as big dogs go. Brave, playful, and always devoted to the family they're with. I've had labs mostly, but they'll run up and lick the guy as he's robbing your house.

If you could do another martial art what would it be?
SBN Doug replied to Ghost's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Perhaps a JJ of some type. But I've never done enough research into each to definately say which one I'd prefer.
