TKD vs. Shaolin Kung Fu
SBN Doug replied to Icetuete's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
O.k., there's some good information coming out, but it really is starting to get to general compared to the topic. Perhaps a seperate topic in the Health and Fitness section regarding the workout portion of MAs would be better suited for this kind of exchange. -
I'm basically one of the few that can withstand the technique, when done properly. So, whether I like it or not, the Master needs someone to demonstrate on. And he knows I can fall properly as to minimize any pain.

A staff should be purchased that is the right proportion to your body. A long staff for me is 6'. A long staff for a shorter person might be 4'. Even though a long staff for them would be a middle staff for me. We typically use long staff for spinning practice, and then use middle staff for forms and sparring. But yes, you can still use a shorter staff to practice all the same things as a long staff.

Welcome. If it hasn't been answered, there may not be a knowledgable response available yet. You can do a search by forums using key words, if you want to give that a try.

Welcome. Your question would be better suited in the "Weapons" forum.

It took me a little over four years in an accelerated training program. They normally quote 4-6 yrs as an approximation, given 2-3 days a week training with no breaks. I had to wait 2 yrs before testing for 2nd, and tested for another 2. So, a little over eight years for 2nd. I'm on my 2nd of 3 yrs wait to start testing for 3rd. Given another 2 yrs of testing, it will make 13 yrs. to third with only a six month break during a move to a different part of the country.

Due to the distance of my home from the dojang, I can only get there once a week. I do train at home for about an hour every weekday morning before work.

O.k., another phrase I need to update my teen slang database with, before my daughter starts using it. Welcome.

Few, good intro.! Welcome.

Welcome. Yes, that field is proving to be very difficult to get into. There are some Universities around CT promoting degree programs in it, but the graduates find that it doesn't get them far, as there are few positions open.

Hapkido vs Combat Hapkido
SBN Doug replied to craknek's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I have to agree that it sounds quite suspicious. In the event the Combat Hapkido dojang has done away with the meditation, you could try looking into Aikido schools as well. Depending on location, you might find a Kuk Sool Won school as well. -
Royce Gracie at the street?
SBN Doug replied to Anzie's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I'm sorry, but I think the question has a majority answer. I'm closing this before any open disrespect for Mr. Gracie starts up. -
Because, if all descriptions sound good, the deciding factors are only available through observation. Some blurb about the art isn't going to tell me if the instructor looks like he's experienced. It isn't going to show you his teaching style. Only from watching the class will you determine if you'd be comfortable going there.

All you "subtitle ers", how do you watch them this way? Do spend outlandish amounts of money buying all the tapes, our is there a way to rent them somewhere?

Karate vs Kung fu
SBN Doug replied to aznkarateboi's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Please stay on topic. Refrain from judging one to be "better" than the other. -
Ah Tenchi, I liked the first series the best, but the second was good too. I was never really into the third. Kamidake, huh? Good thing you explained you liked the knights. I was thinking you liked them as the "guardian" tree stumps. j/k
