http://www.realfighting.com/1001/mattfurey.htm Matt has found a good workout for his combat training. Good for him. But it's nothing new or unique. Maybe he should join the Army. They do the same thing for the most part.

I tend to disagree. Weightlifting is one of the best ways to prevent injuries and rehab existing injuries. Just ask any pro sports doctor or athlete. (Especially Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings. After an almost career ending knee surgery, the first of it's kind on a professional athlete, he hit the weights along with other conditioning exercises and just played his first hockey game since last June.)

Another consideration is what amount of defense is necessary to control the situation. Do you plan on killing some drunk idiot with a head high kick when he can barely stand up in the first place? That will get you 5 to 10 in the pen.

Aikido Vs Judo..
ZR440 replied to TJS's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Once you've learned everything you can from it? Then you are going to take Aikido? Are you planning on living on this planet into the next century? -
I'm safe for about the next 4 or 5 years then.

I have been warned about Marlin when he is leading a test.

Hints , Tips, for perfecting the Perfect Side Kick
ZR440 replied to Looneyas's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
In my class your lower leg will be nearly perpendicular to the ground upon raising it upwards. It will then change when rolling your hips over. It's all supposed to be one continuous motion from the time you lift your foot til the time you set it back down and it takes a while to perfect the timing. Start with low targets and develop the technique before trying to kick out the ceiling lights. Additionally, if your toes point down when you hit your target you are rolling your hips over too far. Toes pointing up means not rolling hips over enough. -
Please try to get your history right if you want to discredit any martial art. Buddhist monks of Korea developed their own style of martial art called Bulkyo Mu Sool. Part of what they knew influenced Kuk Sool Won and probably a few other styles. I think we have heard enough regarding katas and traditional MA. Please try to be more positive in any further posts even if you don't agree. A martial artist is supposed to practice understanding and control. I encourage everyone to start practicing.

It's somewhat of a cultural thing. Firearms play a huge influence in the freedom associated with the USA. The wars we had, the western cowboys, the annual deer hunting camps, shooting grasshoppers with your Daisy BB gun are all examples of how firearms have played an important part in the history of our country. Most of us who have not grown up around firearms do not understand the reasons why we need to have any guns. They aren't ignorant for asking why (unless they are a politician). They just haven't had enough exposure to them. That's understandable. But contrary to what others may choose, I would rather keep my .40 semi auto on me instead of a sword or large knife or whatever. One reason is that I don't know very much about MA weapons. The second reason is just like the Indiana Jones movie.

Is that Marlin Simms that she is beating up on the cover of that mag?

It doesn't. It's probably the way you stated your opinion that AK74 found objectionable. That's OK, no harm done.

Different Martial Arts available in your area
ZR440 replied to Big Game's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm not a student at the college anymore. I take KSW thru what is called extended education services or something like that. Besides, if a person is a member of the World Kuk Sool Association, they can take classes anywhere (with both instructor's permission). It's very standardized, which is great if you have to move to another part of the country, or world for that matter. -

ZR440 replied to Big Game's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
There are about 5-6 different styles available in my area that I know of, most of which are held at a small community college. They are KSW (my favorite, of course), Kuntaw, Judo, Aikido, and TKD. -
No celebration. Well, maybe I'll celebrate today being Friday. Around 4:30.

Welcome Big Game. Nice to see a fellow Michiganian here. Does your name reflect the pusuit of the 30 point buck or gambling? Your class philosophy is something to be admired. -
Buy low, sell high. Yeah, right. I used to have a 401K. It's now a 201K.

I just cleaned my desk a week ago. Found paperwork dated back from last August. Beat that.

I've been in KSW for about three years now and my instructor hammers us on the basics every class. I used to question that myself at first but soon realized the importance.

Thanks for the info.

As much as the so called bad news has been given to carbos recently, I think a person has to have enough to keep the energy level constant with such a workout program that you have.
