  1. What I haven't read from anyone who is is a proponent of weapons training is how you have a lesser chance in knowing how to defend against an armed attacker if you have very little experience with weapons in the first place.
  2. There are different styles of Silat, but in general, it relies on a strong, balanced stance that disrupts the attackers base or foundation. Strikes are usually fast and furious. Joint locks and pressure point hits are common.
  3. Not really. Strikes can be follwed up with joint locks, empty handed or with sticks.
  4. Yeah, we've been known to use knives once in a while. And sticks.
  5. It is very similar. I think the "o" was replaced by the "w" for dialect reasons. We might emphasize more weapons training due to the influence of Kali.
  6. I think both.
  7. There's a guy on this board named Bart who has a website with some videos. You'll see some good examples of proper technique.
  8. That's just a generic quotation. Not taken from Band of Brothers, although I think I remember hearing it in one of the episodes. Enjoy the class. You might find that you'll want more after the semester ends.

  10. I don't think you'd find much Arnis or Kali within the internal art section anyway. They don't try to find "ki" as much as the other arts do. And there aren't many Filipino practioners on this board because it simply isn't as popular as the other arts, which is fine with me. I don't need to be popular to be effective.
  11. Yup, the Master's page seems to be a little smaller now. I'm glad I seen Sims when I did.
  12. Double stick (sinawali) is taught before solo baston now? So much for the alive hand concept...
  13. Sims left KSW? Whoa, that's kinda hard to believe.
  14. Ditto on the ZO6 and Viper.
  15. Dean, You haven't blown that thing up yet? I bet you love spending $3.00/gal for premium now. Oh, that's right, your're in a state that has a refinery and doesn't get scalpped like we do. No premium for my GN for the rest of the year.
  16. Even the engineering/tech schools require certain number of credits in the humanities. I'm not saying all are bad, because I liked a few, but it shouldn't be forced on a student who has to use loan money to pay for it. That's horse crap.
  17. Very well put, Dean. Mr Harmon would probably agree with you. And yeah, some of those humanities classes sucked. I still can't figure out how art appreciation is to help me conduct a failure analysis on pre-production sample parts. Maybe paint them an abstract floral pattern.
  18. Ever seen Yngwie Malmsteen's hands? They're huge. And he plays a scalloped neck to boot. His dexterity and nimbleness is incredible. Buy the G3 in Denver DVD. Vai and Satriani rocks in it too.
  19. S Sensei has a point, but I'm not built like a linebacker like him either. So I'm going to use whatever advantage I have at the time.
  20. KSW is not an easy system and it does take a while for it to gel together without thinking about it. You just haven't gotten to that point. I think that really starts at PSBN level. Possibly at KSN level. All you can do is practice and pick the brains of those who have the experience.
  21. Dog Brothers effective? Well, lets just say that I'd never pick a fight with a guy wearing a shirt with their name on it. And no, I don't think they have online training.
  22. Yeah, he has a point, but the topic really asks about the requirement of weapons in order to excel in martial arts. I guess if a person doesn't feel they are... that's ok. But they better hope they don't get into a fight with somebody who's trained with knives, sticks, whatever.
  23. It's kinda difficult to defend against weapons if you don't practice with them.
