  1. You are correct. I know a warrant officer in the SF who said they really aren't trained in any particular style. If they want specific training, they go and hire an instructor. But they aren't mandated to do much because they work as teams, and not individuals. You'd probably never get close enough to harm a SF guy before they blow a half dozen rounds in your gut.
  2. So would you also try to takedown somebody holding a knife?
  3. Just noticed you're from Mich too. Where ya located?
  4. And how does one learn a whole belts worth of material in a half hour?
  5. Yeah, we have Silat blended into our art as well. Kali and Silat compliment each other very well.
  6. Good point, Bart. The concept of applying weapon based techniques to empty hand is probably one of the most misunderstood aspects of the art. And after practicing Korean systems for quite a few years I can honestly say it wasn't easy for me to grasp that philosophy. But once I did it made total sense.
  7. Chinese Kempo influenced some of the striking aspect of FMAs, but I believe Kali focuses on the destruction of the opponents weapon without much kicking involved. Kicking sort of prohibits the flow of weapons-based techniques, in my opinion. Think about this way: You have a stick and your opponent attacks with a knife. You counter his swing by smashing his hand or wrist with your stick. The result is that you eliminated the weapon, and you probably broke his hand or arm. Now, you might follow up with a kick. But why not just finish 'em off with your stick? That's the Filipino way.
  8. Rule #1 is never get into a knife fight. Rule #2 is never get into a knife fight. Rule #3 is.....
  9. IMO, a beginner like her doesn't need to practice any kick higher than their waist, and certainly not spin kicks. Some instructors let the youngsters go at it with the bags because kids have short attention spans and not much patience, so correct technique can be ignored only because the instructors want to make class fun so that mommy will continue paying monthly dues. If they learn bad form now it only leads to worse form later, not unlike learning to play the piano. Do you see what I'm getting at here?
  10. Sounds like she's trying too hard, too fast with sloppy mechanics. All she really needs to do is slow down. The instructor might have reminded her about proper technique, but allowed it to continue? And she's working on high kicks for what reason? To get to the elevation of equipment thats probably set up for adults? The instructor should know better. You can expect her to get some bumps and bruises, but sounds like the instructor is an idiot.
  11. Happy 25th Birthday!

  13. Sung Jin's team came in 4th? I'll bet they'll be training a little harder this week.
  14. Yeah, I've heard of them. And I dropped a 3/4 lb stick right on my foot last night. Oww man.
  15. Maiden just gets better with age.
  16. Not many people are into Silat because it's not flashy or marketed like other arts. Is that a bad thing? No. Popularity does not always equal quality.
  17. Yes, my art is partially derived from it.
  18. This will be one boring springtime without the playoffs.
  19. They probably wear green uniforms in South Bend.
  20. Experimenting with airsoft guns and looking down the barrel of a handgun is like comparing apples and oranges.
  21. Thanks. They are all quite a ways south of my location, but I'll have to ask my instructor if he's heard of them.
  22. Not that I know of. They must be located in the southern part of the state. Send me a web link if they have one. Thanks
  23. South Bend or K-Zoo might be your only option, unless you can find somebody who practices an art in your town and ask them about schools your immediate area. But I know what you are talking about. I was down in S. Bend and Portage/K-Zoo a few months ago and noticed a lot of TKD schools.
  24. Must be nice. We don't have much stick competetion here in my state. In fact, our club is normally the only group who offers seminars.
  25. Oh man, how I hate hitting tires.
