The Technics behind a sidekick.
ZR440 replied to koreantiger81's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I've been told to stay upright as much as possible to keep an eye on the target. It's kinda hard on the ribs, but makes sense to me. -
Age and the Martial Arts

Hey Thai_Kick, What are you going to do if you ever get clocked by a non-martial artist? I talking about the kind of hit where your head hits the floor and you wake up looking at some of your teeth. -
Age and the Martial Arts

If I was ever lucky enough to beat my instructor (3rd degree KSW) in sparring, it would mean nothing. He'd mop the floor with me if it was a real brawl. Sparring and street fighting is two different things. -
Somebody tell me wat's the use of Martial Arts
ZR440 replied to TigerKorea's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I thought it might be a good place to meet women. I was wrong. -
The people who bash TKD are the ones who also don't realize that people who don't practice martial arts can still be effective fighters. Just because a person has a black belt doesn't mean they have an iron jaw.

Strength training for the Martial Artist
ZR440 replied to Eye of the Tiger's topic in Health and Fitness
Anyone who is able to bench press 500 pounds doesn't need to have much endurance. You get hit by him and it's game over. -
My instructor pulled his hamstring a few weeks ago when me and a few others decided to do a quick one hour practice. We didn't do any warm-up or stretching. We went straight into forms. I don't think we'll be doing that again.

Even I can't come up with one better than that. Well done, Don.

He'll probably be fat and a mental wreck by the time he's 25. People like that don't last long without some kind of burnout.

I think it's acceptable because he has his advisors that assist in those decisions.

2nd row? I'm jealous. Rent or buy their latest concert DVD. It's the Scenes of a Memory tour in New York. Crank it up and enjoy. Whoa, it's scotch thirty. Have a good weekend. I'm outa here.

I also agree. I don't think an organization that is partially made up of tyrants which can vote with the same weight as the civilized countries can be considered respectable.

Hey KickChick, Didn't your husband go see Satriani/Dream Theater? I remember something about you saying that about a month or so ago (as I am currently listening to Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence right now and shopping Ebay for a John Pettruci signature guitar). I went to the Detroit show. That was a prime example of professionalism at it's best. Wished they both could have played more, but that would have been a six hour concert.

Does square eyes mean anything?

Theoretically, to transfer/distribute the energy of the fall.

It's called Hweh Juhn Nak Bub (rolling fall). I know this one well because I sprained my shoulder while learning it. Didn't listen to instructor very well. Came right down on top of it instead of driving forward with rear leg. I learned to pay more attention since that little mishap.

A decent article. I fully agree that MA will not turn someone into a virtuous individual. I have seen too many undisciplined artists at tournaments that think they are almighty. That aspect of MA can be contributed to a poor instructor, clear and simple. And that is not to say that what the individual does outside the dojo is always controllable or preventable, but rather it can be emphasized that what is learned should be respected and not flaunted. The article pointed to the fact that if sports is supposed to make a better person than why so many football players in jail? Again, it all comes down to those who taught the sport and even the parents of those individuals. Blackbelts who look for fights. What a joke. They've obviously never messed with someone who has a concealed weapon.

Fortunately, my MA instructor also teaches technical courses at a community college, so he has quite a bit of experience with people in general. I think there is a definite advantage with having an educated instructor when it comes down to explaining why things are done the way they are done and general people skills.

Hey Ramymensa, I see you're from Romania. My grandparents were from there. Immigrated to US somewhere in the 1920's. I think they were from an area called Hunedora, but the spelling of that might not be correct.

That's what I had early this year. Hurt so d@mn bad that I went in for MRI. I thought my knee was falling apart. Doc said it's just mis-alignment of kneecap. Rehab involved ankle weights. Stupid knees anyway.

Wow. And I thought beer and pizza was the key to passing classes. Must be that bar exams aren't the way to go anymore, eh?
-
I took about two months off this summer, partly because I moved into a new house and our class takes a month off anyway. I didn't practice much at all and found it a nice change of pace. But I soon found myself ready to get back into the routine. Physically and mentally I needed a boost. Attending class a few hours a night twice a week keeps my mind clear and allows me to do other things the rest of the week. To make my point, maybe a training schedule change is needed to keep the intrest level upwards.

Nope. No different. A black belt martial artist isn't any different than Tiger Woods, the Detroit Red Wings, or a Special Forces soldier. Each has strived for perfection and demonstrated dedication, commitment, perseverance towards their goals. They have trained as hard as anyone else. If you think otherwise, try shooting par golf, firing a slap shot while skating, or running up a mountain with an 80 lb backpack on. Willingness to help others? The dojo isn't much different than a bowling league. Both share a common intrest within their group and offer help to those who ask for it.

I seen a female use one in a video and it was awesome. Would not want to get hit with it. But, where to find an instructor might be the real question.
