Age and the Martial Arts
Jiggy9 replied to three60roundhouse's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I got my karate black belt when i was 13...and i will be perfectlly honest. I personally dont think I had a decent grasp of the meaning behind the art or understanding beyond that of actual physical combat; however i could do whatever was required of me in terms of techniques just as well as anyone older then me. Though I deserved a black belt or not, I was and still am v.glad that I did to the art from a young age because it gave me so much in the line of teaching me determination and dedication e.t.c. But then it could also be argued that people who are much older, were at the same stage i was at that age - in terms of understanding e.t.c. -

Yea - I'd second that... I just cant/couldnt find a JKD school here.. There was one, which did Judo side by side, but then they closed down - Which annoyed me a great deal. So as much as I wish to train it - I cant. -
Thank You Patrick!

Hey - So it finally happened! Good to see -
"Also, the placement of the fists at the hips....There's no guard, you're asking someone to knock you out!" I'd just like to point out that there is a difference to the type of karate used in sparring compared to that in basic training. When sparring in Karate - I do have a guard, my fists arent at my hips nor is my stance v.deep, I am usually hoping around - light on my feet ; Infact I look quite like a kickboxer/boxer. If you're wondering why then do Karate students train with deep stances and fists at hips e.t.c though a bit difficult to explain is this. When excecuting a punch; for that split second recoiling one hand to the hips (which is rotating) whilst the other punches allows greater power. (but to be honest I dont recoil my hand to my hip - but just back to my gaurd - unless I have a clear hit which i can use as a finishing blow) As the blow is being delivered, is when one should get into a deeper stance - simply to get closer, get more power, lower centre of gravity hence more balance and the momentum of forward movement. I think youre uncle seemed to know more about what he was doing, in terms of fight stance and gaurd compared to the brown belt you saw. Hope this gives you a different perspective on Karate. Treatment of Taliban prisoners - shaving them because they h
Jiggy9 replied to SaiFightsMS's topic in General Chat
I do agree with you Patrick, but as i've said before the Taliban are very different to most people. I think they are probably a very good example of religous extremists; having said that they are the sort of people that place each and everyone of there religous beliefs above the value of there own life. It's a choice that they have made - free will! When people have that 'free will' taken away from them in a country which is infamous for the freedom individuals have, is a bit suprising. Now Im not saying if the shaving them was right or wrong; but I do think that alot of the people under the taliban were perhaps victims of misinformation/lack of education and desperation. As for the lack of compassion for Americans, I can't say for afghanistan as I've not been there. But I can tell you that it's true. For alot of the middle east; and as my serbian friend tells me - eastern europe. -
I can help you some with the forward flip(this is how I got it)... First get used to doing handstands - against a wall if you like. Then if you can, do the handstands with weights on youre legs; that way you can learn how to gain enough leg momentum you need to do the flip. Once you can do that, try doing a forward flip with youre hands on the floor. Then practice the flips on mats untill you get it..e.t.c Sorry for the crude description, perhaps I can post some links for you l8r.
