it is KARATE , More KARATE - JUTSU (COMBAT) than KARATE - DO ( ART ). All training is good , just train in between sessions with him on your own.
-
Sasori_Te -n beats me to the typeing again , well said. I would also ask how long have you been training perhaps you have just not reached that part of your tarining. The motion in kata that is a spear hand can imply many things, ask your sensei I find that to be a great place to start.

I would have liked to see Wandlei Silva/PRIDE walk into the room wearing his title belt and start dropping people that would have been a show.

WHat do feel is a Good Contract ?
kempocos replied to Shihan's topic in Instructors and School Owners
Have your billing done by automatic withdrawal , this keeps the money coming in. having some sign saying I will train for a year or even three months puts a bad vibe to the training. If the decide to lewave it is thier right and it will cause headaches you do not need. -
" Well, yes, that was part of Mr Parkers genious" I agree 100% " Movement should start at the waist, right behind the tan tien. Power could arguably be said to come from the ground up (and now I've said it, I'm sure someone will want to argue about it ). Is that what you were thinking of? I'm pretty sure Bruce Lee's one inch punch used movement originating from the waist." It is hard to start from the waist , to move the hips there must be some movement in the legs. This is more a Chinese way of thinking I believe

" "Balance....blah blah blah..... Balance, 'cause if you don't have it, you're hurting." Then they show a clip of someone tripping during TKD style point sparring... with the funny foam hats." Reklats - balance is very important, showing the tripping was showing how you will lose without it. the funny foam hats is to keep you from getting a concussion when kicked with 900 - 2000 lbs of force. Oh wait you do GJJ and striking does not exist in fights it just is how 80% of the last few UFC fights have been won. JUST BUSTIN EM I think they did not show enough realistic sparring the drill type confrontations the two guys did showed they were fast , inshape but to kick left/right hook punch combo with a roundhouse to a hook kick ....please

"Ed Parker listed three main principles of power generation: Torque- any time there is a twisting motion involved in your strike, stance, move, etc. Back Up Mass- any time you get your body weight into a technique, either moving forward, backward, or just in body allignment. Marriage of Gravity- when there is a downward component to a move, whether droping a knee on a downed opponent or, at the other extreme, just settling into a stance . " As many things Mr Parker says I find no new info, reworded to make sense to western thinking. The concepts described is much like the fluid " wave " motions found in many Chinese and Okinawian sytles. All movement starts from the ground to the ankle-knee-hip-shoulder-elbow-wrist. the movement can be subtle and still create great power look at Bruce Lee's famous " one inch punch " this is how it is done. The "Karate wars" and inter-dojo challenges.
kempocos replied to Bdaze's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It would often start from someone responding to a statement with a wise crack like " what's that, the "royal we"? ". If I was on the street I might take offense to the way that comes across. The same way you took how I used " we " in my statemant. The inter dojo fights you are refrencing my be 50 years ago but the tradition of them were from long before that. -
Sounds like you have found how to beat him, just watch how he retreats learn to cut him off chances are there is a pattern to his retreat learn to have him move into a technique. Speed is nothing if you are always retreating. keep him in the corner so to speak. less floor less places to run to then your power and grappling will do thier job
-
If you stayed and allowed your job and those you are responsable for suffer financialy, that would show disrespect to those you mentioned remeber character is one of the many things we build in training. As stated train when you have time and stay in touch with your sensai, return to that Dojo when you can.

I would recommend a book by Rick Clark called "75 blocks", it show 75 valid use for what we refer to as a down block.

The "Karate wars" and inter-dojo challenges.
kempocos replied to Bdaze's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
"To be honest, that is not what MA is about. That is definitely not the martial spirit. Friendly competition and tournies are one thing, but to go out and do something like that gives martial arts a bad name." To be honest it is exactly what it is about , remember MARTAIL ARTS is about fighting and killing the JUTSU. The whole passive side came about from the sport side the DO. Even the Japanese after they took and changed the OKINAWAIN KARATE to be more school yard friendly would be involoved with such compititions. Then as time moved on and tournaments became a money maker it made business sense to not just go to a DOJO. In the early days the great masters would be involved in such matchs where there were no foam pads covering you and point sparring was not even considered. As the sport Karate grew they created rules and gear to make it safe in keep the money flowing. -
TANGSOO ad DELTA put it very well, in training we breakdown the flow of the block/couter. This is so the stance , arm postion and movement can be done corretlyand fluid. In the heat of an attack these should be as one, and the time spent drilling has conditioned the required muscles to move respond fast and with power.

Do not stop if you run out of gas keep going if you forget a self defense they want to see for a KATA movement do something else do not stop. It is more important to react with a valid defense than to admit you blanked on the one they wanted. At this level you are expected to bring yourself to the art, so stay focused on the task at hand. REMEBER YOU HAVE BEEN PERFORMING AT THE EXPECTED LEVEL ALREADY OR YOU WOULD NOT BE TESTING. GOOD LUCK , let us know how it goes.

I feel that this is best answered by what your goal is. Do you train to go the tournament route where flashy KATA and tippy tap point sparring is needed, or are you in a combative style where damge is the goal. Tourney side the more kata you perfect the better range of movements you can pull from in case the person you are competing against pulls off a great KATA. Then you can switch your game plan when the bar is raised. Combative side the more BUNKAI you know the better prepared you are to respond to how you are attacked. I have always found that any sinlgle movement in a KATA can have many techniques drawn from it. This is also why so many systems use the same KATAS , it is the way the founder viewed the bunkai that gave rise to the creation of the new style. I love to see how differant people view the KATA and how they pull techinques from it.

College student w/ a question for instructors...
kempocos replied to JeffN10's topic in Instructors and School Owners
stl_karateka - I must respectfully disagree. To run a program with out a DAN ranked person involed is doing a dis service to those you teach. You may be a great student , however the the title SENSEI is something earned from many hours of training and in the styles I have studied of these three I obtained BLACK BELTS no one under 2nd degree was ever called SENSEI, SEMPAI yes SENSEI no. I agree that teaching is a great teaching tool if there is a QUALIFIED DAN ranked instructor overseeing. -

TANG SOO - I ment no offense and only spoke from my experiences, in my area there are three Y's and they offer poor training. I think that I generalized too much. I agree colored belts teaching when a higher rank is overseeing the class is fine and offers great things for the person teaching , My post was directed to the running of a program at that rank. I have seen it happen far too often. If I was unclear it was due to rushing the post, so the boss does not see that I like karate forums over work -

KARATEKID wrote "I teach at a YMCA (besides helping at my dojang). They pay $45 for 8 weeks (8 lessons a session .... once a week). As an instructor, I try to give them their "money's worth" so to speak. Try to find a good YMCA program" Are you still a blue belt, if so you should not be running any program you are a student who has not mastered the basics yet. In most styles the BLACK BELT simply means you have completed the basics now it is time to learn the meat of the style. This is a pet peve of mine and it is what starts comments like MCDOJO. Would you pay for a class taught by someone who has not even reached brown no less black. and this is why I would suggest staying away from YMCA programs. If you you have reached 2nd degree (in adult classes) this is when the title SENSEI is given then I apologize. -
I haven't ever seen a jumping and turning kick in a traditional karate kata. kempocos: Ryukyu Kempo? Dillman's or some true Ryukyuan style? Shigeru Nakamura's? _________________ Taika Oyata's I have seen it used in KATA and it looked sharp, how trad. the persons school was I do not know.
-
Two things I do not like about it 1 turning my back on the person 2 jumping in the air looks sharp during KATAS
