  2. long before TAE-BO was around he was a fighter, here is some of his info and this was before the fancy foam sparring gear. n 1975 he became the first Amateur Athletic Union Champion, a title he would win five times in all A seventh degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, Billy holds black belts in five other forms of martial arts A seven time world karate champion he captained the U.S. Karate team and won 36 gold medals in international competition He was Nationally ranked by Karate Illustrated from 1982 through 1989 Billy won the 1984 Massachusetts Golden Gloves champion in the light-heavy weight class and Tri-State Golden Gloves Champion of Champions I feel this is much more than many can claim in the way of fight training. The guy became a successful business man by selling his workout. I wish I could get rich working out with very hot ladies.

  4. Two words WANDELAI SILVA he would bust up either of the the Van Dammes. JCD won a tournament in Belgim once , it was like any tourny in the states on any weekend there rae several new champs. Wolverine - I see in your profile you study an OKINAWAIN STYLE san chin ryu , I have never heard of it what liniage does it follow . Also who created your other style .... just curious I research all Okinawian arts.

  6. "lol, my Sensei just said that there are no hidden things and secrets in karate." I agree. many feel the way they breakdown a KATA has been a closely gaurded secret. When if you truly study the KATA and apply variuos attacks to each movement a wealth of techniques come foward.
  7. I live in NJ, My instructor Frank Anese moved to Virginia and runs Ricks old school. Rick is the head of our system. I train with Rick about every 6 weeks or so for a five hour block. The school in NJ is now owned by a senior student of Frank and the training routine is following his direction. Frank has Tom Muncy and Rick when not on a seminar teachs still teach at his school.

Rick Calls them the next generation The Western Bubishi - book by Rand Caldwell, it covers info from The BUBISHI , PP from a cluster not a pinpoint attack, Body Alarm Reaction and so much more.   10. when KARATE was created in OKINAWA it was about toe to toe fighting. The fact that they refined the techniques to be so efficient and desdly does not change why they were training. Then when it was taken to JAPAN it was changed so school children could train in school, in fact that is what the PINAN kata series was created for. Many styles were created to specificly fight other systems since town to town competitons were a way of life.

  14. I have seen that version, it is a very popular SHOTOKAN breakdown, and a valid one. My main point is that the movements have more than one meaning. If you look you will that the same KATA names in many styles , it is the breakdown that seperates the styles. Question during the breakdown you state you block , punch, turn to address second attacker my question is this DO YOU THINK A SINGLE PUNCH WILL END THE FIRST ATTACK? Not what you have been told, but from hard sparring and watching boxing and fights. This leaves two options keep fighting and have the second person get in on you or you turn , but if the first is not done they will get you. Mulitple attackers it would be better to move around the first while fighting and put him between you and the next fighting one at a tiime.
  15. these are not hidden techniques, rather the original intent of the OKINAWIAN creators of them. There is a saying that another board member uses , A BLOCK IS A STRIKE IS A LOCK IS A THROW The KATA'S you mentioned the TAIKI- series is full of great grapppling techniques, and of the turn is indicating a possable throw. This BUNKI view opens up alot of vital point strikes / pressaure point strikes ( kyusho)and grappling / joint manipulation (TUITE). When KARATE was brought from OKINAWA to JAPAN by Funakoshi much of this direction was changed to make it more vuisually appealing for compition. If you read about another KARATE pioneer Choki Motobu you will read about some of the same style debates that still are around today. To this I would say keep an open mind look at each major movemnet on its own and not part of a sequence, apply it to many attacks and you will see all the differant things the movements can be ssuch as what is refered to as a down block can mean, example pulling the right hand to the hip while down block could mean the following attacker cross hand grabs your wrist, roll your wrist and regrab and pull arm to hip with left hand reach up and grab hair pulling head back on a 45 degree angle pulling it down as you turn pulling the attacker down.
  16. Well refering to a fighter as a performer, and being visually appealing being important. I would take being called a performer as an insult, I train to be a fighter. And to be truthful my coments about children, that is what the art was created it to be when Funakoshi started teaching in Japan. Makeing it appealing to those watching tournaments, removing much of the grappling, vital point attacks, takedowns from the kata bunkai.

  18. I think a shotokan performer is often more visually appealing than someone who performs isshin-ryu, but don't let that completely bias your decision That is because SHOTOKAN was created to look good and be taught to school children, where ISSHINRU was created to to teach you how to fight

  20. I agree , I know guys at the gym who believe that being able pump massive wieght means they can fight and know more about it. I just say K1 , SAPP VS BORJANSKY 350LB MUSCLE BOUND SAPP learned a lesson about well trained and speed. A painfull one at that.
  21. Karate is NOT about fighting!!! It's about NOT fighting!!! WHAT !!! it is about knowing enough and being good enough to crush them and if need be survive if they are better than you. It was and is about fighting
  22. SMR it sounds like you are actually looking at the original intent the creators of your style had for your art. The term MAKE THE ART YOUR OWN, means exactly that. The movment in a KATA can be used against many types of attacks, the only why is try variuos situations and see what works. There is NO techniques that will work the same on /for all people. I stated sparring like a street fight, no DOJO type stances, so you learn to flow and drop into your stances during techniques. This includes grappling, take downs, ground work. Not just kicks and punchs.
  23. KNOWING YOUR ART AND KNOWING HOW TO APPLY YOUR ART IS NOT THE SAME. I as many have come across this in thier training. I then started studiing under Rick Moneymaker/Tom Muncy of THE DRAGON SOCIETY, Russel Stutely is a member as well and trains under thier direction. They showed me how to apply the BASICS to combat effective techniques regardless of style. They teach how to BUNKAI with a wider view offering move techniques from each movement. There is are books and a great DVD at https://www.dragonsociety.com. Anotehr thing I did was when sparring I approached it like a street fight, some did not like it, some did. I also found as time went on more of my training partners saw the need to approach sparring more like a street fight.
  24. miguksaram - I stand with the grant idea from yesterday on THAT OTHER BOARD. "So, I, Teacher A starts school B, an invented system. I am the highest rank in School B because I founded the martial art. I am the head of Organization B that oversees my other schools. Who verifies my rank? Who invalidates it? " If I get the concept , Most teachers who invent claim some prior training that is the basis for the the new style. Verify the prior to see if they have the knowledge to invent a valid style. Do not judge just verify claims of RANK , STYLES TRAINED, YEARS WITH WELL KNOWN INSTRUCTORS who the present as creadentials. Let the public known the info has been tracked down and confirmed. Although everyone knows it is a good idea before training, not many know how to go about it.
  25. They billed it as " MARTIAL COMBAT SEE WHERE THE BODY ENDS AND THE WEAPON BEGINS" Mostly it was MATT AND MIKE SEE WHERE KARATE ENDS AND DANCE/GYMNASTICS BEGINS. The whole style vs style misses the point, however I still say Wandlei Silva coming in and dropping them would have made for a better show
