  1. all i found when i put his name into google were a whole bunch of bob duggan home pages and http://www.hwarangdo.com/judicial/judicial1%20revised%206-5-01.htm, which is the judicial actions taken against him for his slander and a number of other stuff he did. could you give me the site address?
  2. hmm, i don't believe i've seen mr. duggans site, i'll check it out when i'm done on the forums here my main "dog" in this "fight" is that A&E did a quick thing on hwa rang do in a martial arts special, and i know that they're required to do massive amounts of research before they put things out. i'll check his site out, though
  3. i love learning about any history, really, be it MA or european or asian or american or whatever. the trouble with the history of my style, as i believe is being talked about in another thread as we speak, is it's very messy and it seems to come down to one guys word against anothers. i like the tall tales, too, those are always fun to read
  4. "This is gonna sound harsh, but I'd suggest your choice of reading material is rather limited. Last time I was interested in this topic, the best information I could find put Hwa Rang Do at a little over 40 years old. " not at all, though i'd love to see your sources my grandmaster states that it was passed down person to person before he started opening schools, so schools have only been around since about the 60's, but the art has presumably been around for 2,000 years. there's a martial arts encyclopedia (2 actually, but i forget the titles. i'll look tommorow at work ) that hold this to be true. however, as it is essentially just his word, and there has been quite a few political scandals in my art. but i trust my grandmaster to be an honorable man, and i believe that how i feel about my training matters quite a bit more than how i feel about the styles history. it's not that i'm willfully ignorant, i look for new sources whenever i can, i just haven't found much in the ways of reliable sources that say otherwise.
  5. i just got into 311 a little bit, but i haven't heard that much of them. what i have heard i've liked, though.
  6. hmmm... i see what you mean, tibby. i guess i'm just fortunate, i'm of average height and my school swears by free weights do what you can monkey girl
  7. well, although i hear what you're saying dokter vet (there's a guy in my school who does the same thing), there's quite a difference between self defense and beating a guy into a bloody heap out of anger and vengeance. i'm gotten in my share of fights, but i don't think they've ever ended like that. that could just be me though.
  8. i would recomend 2 sets of 8-12 sets to work the endurance level, assuming your going back into MA (or if you plan on running ). if there's a pool near by, you may want to consider a bit of swimming, as they seem to work out their whole body and they can do it forever, what with there being in a large tank of cool water and all. lat pull downs should work your shoulders to a certain degree, at least that's what the lifting chart at my school says. i could be wrong, its been awhile, but i believe it does. otherwise DRLs, but those are free weights. HOWEVER: allow me to point out that you're the first person i've ever talked to who lifts and prefers the machines. free weights develop more muscle over shorter periods of time on account of the fact that you work other muscle groups to do the exercises properly.
  9. "(unless you attacked by a die hard movie fan who wants to recreate the final scene from his favourite movie" )" that would be kinda cool. "no, you can't do that, you have to stand over there and do a jump kick, or else it wont work!"
  10. oooo, i think that's bad for you back, though.
  11. i haven't seen it, but everyone i've talked to says it's terrible. i think i'll wait til it come out at the library. or ask one of my movie theater working buddys to slip me in
  12. ...to learn a sword art? i don't see how that would help...
  13. "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles. I loved the love-hate friendship dynamic between the two characters. I've lived near a prep school for 13 years (this year I'm actually going to it), so the story hit pretty close to home. Plus, it's just very well-written. Very fine book indeed" hmmm... i never did get around to reading that. it's on my list, by my friends all say it sucks so i'm slowly making my way towards it
  14. i'd say it's more or less likely, considering that it's fairly well documented. nobody ever said the practicioners were gods or anything. whether what i do is what the hwarang did is up for debate, but quite frankly i really don't care, considering i have a great deal of fun doing it.
  15. uh... that's gotta be one of the most useless inventions ever. i'm no fan of mice either, but wow, i wouldn't grab a super low power gun and hunt them.
  16. i would like to think that i would hit her as i would a man. a woman is a human the same as a man with that said, i would try to avoid the situation with either sex
  17. at my school there is a verbal test at every belt test and once you get to higher levels you have to take written tests on terminology, the history of the style, the seven principles of training, all kinds of stuff. to get a black sash there's a massive written test accompanied by essays and i believe even 2 poems.
  18. i really don't think it matter what his name is. the show would be the same if his name was bob or earl or sue
  19. i more or less liked the hunt for red october. outside of that, i haven't particularly enjoyed anything. oh, and i know he's a childrens author, but i like lemony snicket. as a librarian, my bosses make me read all kinds of books incase someone asks for advice on what to grab, and i can say that his stuff is as good as good as most adult fiction authors.
  20. don't look at me, i'm not testing it
  21. well, in your situation, i would present the options to the student and let them decide.
  22. "Not sure if you live the US but I know you have to watch where you put them because many places wont hire you if the tattoo shows. now if you get away with covering it and you have been working at the place for a decent amount of time then decide to bust out the artwork then they cant do nothing. just get it where you want, but watch out on what career your heading into.." last i heard that only applies to teaching/daycare positions, and even that's pretty loose. you probably wont get to far as a politician, either. i could be wrong, though.
  23. "If I may interject. TKD is based off of Shotokan Karate. Earliest Kata or whatever Korean term they use were identical to Shotokan. " that's interesting, i've never heard that. most of what i've read is that tae kwon do was based off of hwa rang do, a much more complex and expansive korean martial art that's 2,000 years old. i could be wrong, especially since i really don't know much about shotokan, but i'm a practicioner of hwa rang do and can say that we have all of tae kwon do's techniques, so i'd believe it. it might just leave me biased, though
  24. hehe, sasori_te, i love your signature yeah, there are a lot of technicalities in that sort of thing which can either result in injury or will leave the technique ineffective. best bet is to find some nice guy who knows what s/he's doing and have him/her show you some stuff.
