Boxing vs Judo
Treebranch replied to MMouse's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Yeah, but they don't teach you not how to get kicked or how not get caught by a grappler. They also teach you how to bob and weave which is great for a boxing match, but terrible for a knife fight. Also it is better to move your whole body offline than just your upper body in a real situation, it's just safer. Also stepping on their feet when you get in close is a good idea as well, which Judo teaches. I think boxing is a great sport and they are some tough dudes, but they'd get eaten alive by a well rounded fighter. -
You can strike without recoil of the arms by using your body movements to create the strikes. Also when someone attacks you shift offline and allow them to crash into your fists while you are rooted and lounge forward, their weight and your weight will be crashing together against his face or wherever your fists are. You are also not accounting for kicks which are strikes as well. Stomp kicks are very fast and come out of nowhere and can be done from in close under the radar, try it sometime. Also, from a strike and kick can be followed by a throw and a stomp to the head or wherever you want. I by no means think this is easy, but it is possible and efficient.

What made you do the Martial Art that you do?
Treebranch replied to Metsubushi's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I'm an artist and love art. -
Efficient is more useful than fast. As boxers have showed us in many fights, you can tired out your opponent by not letting them get you. They will expend too much energy and get sloppy in return. Tactics are more important. Western boxing is not the fastest, there's more efficient ways of striking that don't use any recoil and are extremely effective. It's just that it is not put on display and promoted with millions of dollars behind it. I mean no disrespect to boxing, I'm a big boxing fan. It's just that there are more efficient ways of fighting, than boxing.

Stupid Black Belt Magazine Adds!!

What crap. -
No that's not what I meant. I was comparing a highly physical sport to one that is all about technique an analogy to tactics vs. strength. By the way if the golfer has his 9 iron the football player will get wrecked. LOL!

Running attacks and takedown advice...
Treebranch replied to cymry's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Sure, but what makes it work is that you use the arm to control his spine or balance and take him to his balance point. The balance points are where people have no strength and will fall if you know what your doing. Usually if you take someone to their balance point they will try to catch themselves and that's when you change direction on them and they will go down, or drop your weight on it. -

It's not an BJJ armbar, it's just levering the arm to cause the person to bend over. When you have them bent over you put your weight on the arm forcing them to go down on their stomach or have their arm break at the elbow. I don't know if that is clear or not, but hopefully it is. Their many ways to get someone to go down. -

The first Matrix is much deaper than you think Drunken Monkey. It's about the material world vs. the non-material world. Which is more important? The tangible or non-tangible. Fantasy or reality, truth or lies. Help! I'm drowning! -
Save up for a good one. The cheap one might break and cause you injuries, it's not worth it.

It's like golf vs. football. Golf is all about technique. Football has technique, but strength is essential.

Kempocos said: Good point. So if someone knows what they are doing and they can strike you elsewhere to loosen the neck area up, the strike could be mortal. You know there are ways of doing that in a fight. It's not impossible.

Fireka that's great that it connected with you. It connected with me in some ways, but I've seen to many great films to know that it's wasn't one of them. It wasn't trying to be more than it was. It's more than most film made recently, I give you that. I'm dissing it, I loved it. Best film? Great film? I don't know. I think Lone Wolf and Cub and Zatoichi are much better than Kill Bill. Don't get me wrong I'd see it again and it's definitely making it into my must have DVD's. -

Kill Bill
Treebranch replied to battousai16's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Fact is there are serious films and fun films. Kill Bill was a fun film. There are films with deep symbolism and films that are meant to provoke us through shock. Kill Bill is the latter. I would say that Tarantino is a good director, great is a matter of opinion I guess. It might get an Oscar for something. It will not get best film or best director, or best actor. I'll bet money on that. -

Running attacks and takedown advice...

Cymry, if he sprawls on top of you before you can pull it off you're in big trouble. Usually you can take almost anyone down with a good armbar as long as you can get him off balance before hand. People usually will go down because they don't want you to break their elbow, but you need make sure you have control of him when he gets to the ground. There are other simple takedowns you can use by stepping behind and trapping his feet from moving and pushing his face back or something to get him to bend back slightly. I don't know if this is clear, it's hard for me to explain with words. The key is getting them off balance and knowing how to take advantage of that moment when he's trying to catch himself to take him down.
