"See the thing about tai-chi is, despite its *wordskippedcantspellit* movements, its reverred as a destructive force" "I hope so, cause so far.... this sucks"

Sticks are universal Havn't you ever seen jackie chan use a chair etc to beat people up jeez !

Correct me if I'm wrong... but you're going for the wrong effect... Isn't kata supposed to be used for something besides showing off?

No where in my comment did I say I felt the woman sucked at karate. I gave to examples of good and bad, dont say i underestimate the power of a woman, and dont say she'll clean my clock. Thats nearly the same thing with places switched as the topic we are discussing here dont you agree? Saying that Just cause a Guys a guy doesnt mean he can win, is the same as saying just cause a girls a girl doesnt mean shes cant do MA.

Well, not meaning to offend or say its the general case, cause it's not but: One night we were sparring, it was pullback sparring so we didnt really hit. And I sparred against this orange belt girl. Wasn't much of a challenge though(not trying to be cocky, but I got quite a few punches in on her head, and kicks to her legs etc.) Then I sparred a brown belt, and she just worked me, so its the size of the fight in the dog not the ... gender of the dog in .. bah whatever you get the point

The way my Sensei teaches me is using the following statement "A block is a strike and a strike is a block". If someone goes to punch you and you dodge and kick them in the stomach, do you believe you blocked their punch? I do.

First off what I wanna say is everyone is forgetting one thing: Wasn't karate practically invented to be used dishonorably if you think about it? Hiding in the shadows and hitting the samurai from behind when they wern't paying attention? I can understand why they would do this, but it is not the "honour" everyone is talking about. I believe you need to understand this is how it was originally. before it was tought by masters.

It's basically what it says, style. Some involve throwing, some involve more kicking then punching, some involve more punching then kicking. Also principles are a big factor in it, philosphies and ideas etc.

If you train in Shotokan then Shotokan is the most effective for YOU I'm not gonna change styles just so that I can fight better on the street :\

Ditto here, and it was supposed to be 3 months for my Yellow, but, the next test wasn't until the end of august so it was closer to 6. No worries though, just meant I could impress my Sensei more

I've had people beg me to have knife fights vs them. Well not beg but you know, but I just avoided the situation and .. well left

Also, meaning no offense, if you're fairly obese, walking can be something you can do to gradually work up to jogging or running.

High protein... Best stuff for a low carb diet would be white meat (chicken and tuna etc.) You can also buy some sort of protein shake with no carbs in it. I wouldn't say Pastas are bad carbs, in fact they are good carbs. You want to be eating complex carbs, meaning carbs that don't enter your blood stream quickly, and make your insulin levels go up. This means, whole wheat bread, vegetables, fruits, and other things. Nutritionists have a index made.. called the Glycemic Index (GI). http://www.mendosa.com/gi.htm

I have gatorade... You might bash it and say it does nothing for thirst quenching, but that's not the reason I drink it, I have water for that. When you finish working out, you're glycogen levels are low, and need carbs to replace it fast. And well gatorade is full of sugar so it does the trick I usually have something tasty like a sandwhich when I get home

I heard of some LaCrosse player who got hit in the chest with the ball (he was the goalie) at the exact instant it was starting a new beat, and this stopped his heart O.O

According to my sensei slow kicks help speed up your kicks, you develop stronger legs etc. What he has us do is grab a partner and put right hand up and right side forward, then we lift our right leg, hold it in chamber, then kick out fast, and hold it there for 4 seconds, then bring it back to chamber and hold it there, then our partner goes. Then we do 2, etc. Till we are at 8, and at 8 we hold there for about 1 minute. Switch rights and lefts for other side.

Weakness/nausea in first classes. Should I go slow ?
hobz replied to goedikey's topic in Health and Fitness
Could be just a one time thing, maybe you wernt feeling well Could also be dehydration, you drink lots of fluids? Talk to your sensei, let him know whats going on, and he might have some advice to offer you -
Iolair is right, you need to add something different. If youve been doing the same thing for ages, your body is used to it. You need to shock your body. Try changing things around. If you're just doing pushups it's tough, but if you're lifting weights, and you usually do... dips before bench press, trying doing bench press before dips. Or try supersetting... do a set of bench press, then go do some dips ASAP. then rest. You eating properly ? Most of muscle is made from nutrition, with 135 lbs. Id say your body type is what is known as ectomorph, tall, skinny, long muscles, and a fast metabolism. Eat lots of food! You're body needs it to build muscle especially with your body type! By food I mean, vegetables, and food with protein, ie: Milk, Cheese, Tuna, Chicken, anything that comes from an animal will have protein. http://www.bodybuilding.com/teen/mclane15.htm
