  1. There's so many choices while you're grappling someone. Should you just wait for him to go ? Or initiate a move yourself? If you initiate what happens if you don't get it? What's more important: a Stalemate, or Risking getting submitted? I found yesterday while grappling with some people in my class that I'd go for something, it wouldn't work and I'd lose my base and I'd have to stop going for it and get back to proper posture (This was in the guard, I was in his, god sometimes it's a pain passing a guard). And sometimes while he's in my guard and I go to sweep, I unlock my ankles and then just gave him an opening. Ah the choices. Just trying to start some discussion on what everyone thinks, or if there is a set of procedure. ie: Rule #1 Don't risk it. Go at it!
  2. Just recently my sensei(who gets in on sparring) grappled me, and the blue belt did as well. Afterwards they were telling me how much fun it is to roll with me, cause I was finally grasping some of the concepts. Felt good to hear some praise Now I want nothing more then to grapple.
  3. I'm just curious, if you could give me some exact technique for slipping? I known how to but I want to make sure theres nothing I'm doing wrong with it.
  4. I think it'd be hard to explain to my mom that I'm REALLY practicing Brazilian JiuJitsu

    First Kata

My Dojo first introduces Taikyoku Gedan to the students. Simply because it introduces the basic movement patern of the first 7 or so katas (The I) and the Shiko Dachi. After this the white belts learn Chudan and Jodan.
  6. To be honest, since my adrenaline is going and everything, I don't feel it until I stop for rounds or, at the end of a sparring session.
  7. I am just curious what the normal amount of time between belts is. It's just curiousity not anxiousness Thanks.
  8. I think that being a white belt was more for effect She wasn't necessarily a the speaker, or she was recounting a story Mr.Italian
  9. I have not heard of him, however 8th dan is an incredible achievement. Congratulations to him for his heard work and achievement.
  10. Full contact stick fighting? Yea that's crazy
  11. As I have just started I don't know all the terms yet hehe. Is there a site somewhere with a glossary? Osotogari? Uchi Komi? Thx for all the help.
  12. I know this may seem odd, but is there anything you can do to train on your own in Brazilian Ju Jitsu. I want to practice everything as much as possible, and I do not always have a partner to work with. So is there any technique, or sensitivity drills that I can work on. I'm so used to being able to train on my own from Karate and Muay Thai, and it's just strange not being able to practice BJJ at home.
  13. Hyperextension is one reason Im afraid to kick the air etc. When we have to do it in class and my Sensei tells me to use more power it's tough hehe. I don't think I have enough power to hyperextend, but who wants to try?
  14. Thanks for the responses guys, I'll try it. I also think I'm going to buy some books on speed + agility and see what I can discover
  15. Alright, I did a quick search and I found that there are many posts about skipping rope and if it is beneficial. But none of them really went into technique of it. Does anyone suggest a book to read or website? Or would anyone be kind enough to suggest some drills to do. I want to develop my footwork, agility, cardio/endurance, etc. Anything would be appreciated. Thank you!
  16. Hmm, at my dojo in GoJu-Ryu it takes 3 months from white - yellow (Although it took me 5 just because of when I joined and when the gradings were) 5-6 for yellow to orange, same for orange to green. Then green is the longest belt, I think it's about a year, simply because of all of the katas they throw at you that you need to learn. Then from there it all depends on how well you do with your katas.
  17. Boards don't hit back
  18. Yea, its called Fonzie or something like that.
  19. The Jo never beat Musashi, nothing beat Musashi, hence the reason he was undefeated. However, in their second duel when Gonnosuke was using the Jo they did strike each other at the same time stopping just before connecting. Realizing if they had both connected they would have died. It was a draw, not a defeat.
  20. You have to ask yourself why you want to beat him. Do you want to beat him so you can maintain your "rank" of top kumite? Or simply because you want to know all ways of getting through defense? If you want to beat him to much... it won't happen.
  21. Doesn't matter really what the correct art is, just that you know how to use it. Certain styles of doing things arn't gonna work as well against a brauler like Mike. Which is why you adapt..
  22. Lately I've been wondering about the restrictions that stlyes put on us. Low Stances, High Stances, Hand Here, Kick There. I think you should do what is right for the moment.

GoJu-Ryu as far as I know, but they might teach shotokan mixed. https://www.cmac1.com Sensei Platt 8th degree ... something to be proud of I'd say
  24. I was once told that original karate is more spiritual then kung fu. This true?
