  1. I must admit to being a bit surprise by how often it's used in Seido, I can't remember using it so often way back in my Shotokan days, but it has been well drilled into us at my current dojo (Seido). Now I don't even notice and it doesn't bother me at all, if that's whats required then that's OK by me. More Osu, less push ups!
  2. Be fun to put all the "Honorary" BBs into a tournament amongst themselves. I'm guessing, but I imagine ole' Vlad would finish pretty high up the ladder........................
  3. Sorry I'm a bit late to the party, but what a great post!! MA should be for everyone shouldn't it? I'm sure we all agree.
  4. Depends on the criteria, do you want to cut/slash? or bash and poke??? I think probably Jo may be acceptable to carry around in public if that is what you wanted to do, maybe kn the guise of a cane/walking stick. I believe Sai are derived from a gardening implement, but someone more knowledgeable than I would know for sure.
  5. No slogan at our dojo either. There are some phrases that we hear from Seishi, "Breathe" is one that is heard often during class.
  6. I'm 50 very soon, I train twice a week and to be honest I need the 3 days in between to recover, and it doesn't seem to have changed, 2-3 days to recover with no sign of my body becoming more accustomed, therefore any extra training is either stretching, light bag work or revising katas......................
  7. [quote name="Wastelander" The trouble is' date=' as you've discovered, that not all styles want to publicly post videos of their kata. I think this is silly, especially considering the technology age we are living in. My organization doesn't tend to like it, but we post stuff, anyway. Luckily, there are some videos of Chibana Chosin (the founder of our style) that are publicly available, so I can refer people to those, if nothing else. [/quote] I agree, seems a moot point, basic kata on you tube is nothing that isn't found in all manner of books out there. Certainly easier to watch (pause, slo-mo etc) on a monitor or TV than to visualize based off a description in a book surely.......
  8. Hey Liger, Do you have a link to your podcast? Be interested to take a look. Regards, Bull
  9. Maybe get critique at the dojo first, really get to know the movements well and then polish, polish, polish...........
  10. I work away from home a lot, at random times of the year also and hate to miss classes, which inevitably happens. I am guilty of tweaking some dates of international work travel to make sure I still grade with my classmates. Coincidence, that last night I was chatting on facebook to arrange training at a Moscow dojo, as I will be there for 3 weeks later in the year on a work trip. Juggling life and MA can be tough, depends on your priorities I guess..........
  11. I try to do everything I can on both sides, including sparring, maybe it can be off putting for my opponent if I switch while I mid-fight, I don't know..................
  12. HHHmmmm interesting observation, I can see what you are saying, some people forget that it's not just Katas and fitness..................
  13. I made my own portable Makiwara out of Oak and Manila rope. Take it with me everywhere I go. http://i.imgur.com/n75bY7U.jpg
  14. That's a great post, Should be read by every new MA student. Thanks very much for the link.
  15. Wow, I would pay to see that! (Well actually no, but still be fun to watch)
  16. Cynthia in "Thrust of freedom" was probably my favourite scene in the whole show. I'm subscribed, but the "season" shows have dried up.
  17. Congratulations there Kwon. Don't be too worried about double grading, it's a journey, not a race. Enjoy it. Osu!
  18. While we are talking heavy bags, I use the compression type fingerless gloves instead of wraps when I do heavy bag work, They are supposed to support the wrist etc. Not sure how good this is for me, considering I also use a Makiwara. My bag work is pretty straightforward, combinations and kicking for power and speed.
  19. Thanks for all the well thought out posts. I was thinking that likely frustration or politics and or ego were likely the primary motivators..... And of course $$$$$$............ Again, thanks for the replies.
  20. Yeap, we are on the same page no argument there. Just wondering what the motivation is and how it must affect existing students etc.
  21. I see that over the years people leave established styles of MA and start their own "style". A 3rd or 4th Dan starts their own style, wondering what is the motivation as surely there is still more to learn from their original style. And the students of that dojo, wondering what happens, do they stick to their style and find another dojo or go with the CI (Stay in the current dojo). Just curious. Does it dilute or does it improve over "old" systems and techniques? Trying to understand the motivation behind such a drastic step.
  22. In our dojo officially, every 3-4 months for the lower Kyu belts, every 6 for the higher Kyu students, depending on attendance, attitude and being "ready". Dan gradings you are told well in advance.
  23. I have his site bookmarked, he has some great motivational clips and articles. You can see passion in everything he puts out there.
  24. Congrats man, that is a big one to tick off the "list".
  25. A well equipt dojo, right from the start, sounds like he's doing it properly. Good stuff.
