Thanks ashworth for sharing your thoughts, I agree if the class is only 2 or 3 students per instructor then there might be minimal need for private lessons

I just would like to know what members think of private lessons for MA ? what would be the benefits ? do you need it if you are not going to compete ? Is it worth the cost or the dojo classes are enough ? ...etc. I just found that the new dojo I have just joined has this option. Any thoughts about private lessons will be much appreciated. I wanna have a better /clear picture of the position of private lessons in MA genrally !

I guess this would be a good way to start sparring but unfortunately he was sparring with other kid arround same age !

Yes, I/we allow new students to spar their first session; it's a norm. I would've let him be because sparring is intimidating enough for a beginner, and even more so when it's your first time and you're 13 years old. I would've let him just cry, he's not really bothering anything, and I would've allowed him to sit with his parent(s). I would've pulled him and his parents in my office for a comforting conversation. Letting them know how proud I was of him, and that he choice to spar, even though he didn't have to. Explaining to them that contact is very possible, no matter how much safety we've on the floor; things happen. Expect to be hit while sparring!! Answer all of their questions, and address all of their concerns truthful. After that, there's not much more I can do. I'd also have one of my instructors and/or myself shadow him for the time being to ease his anxieties, which will be there, even more so!! My job is to teach as well as to ensure that the Student Body is protected at all times!! Thanks for the detailed reply

Good points of view everyone. I didn't spar myself on that session & tbh it felt very weird that I was the only one sitting & watching but for me I need to pick up & refamiliarize myself with the differnt blocks & combinations before I spar, this will minimise risk of injury specially with the tough sparing I have seen in the dojo. I might not be right but for me I am training to improve my health & fitness more than to compete !

Thanks Sensei8. I wish I keep up my enthusiasm & passion for training, it won't be easy for me I know but will try to do my best. Being part of this forum always help to stay motivated

Last night in the dojo there was a new young studnet (about 13 years old), it was his first session ever in MA. He was doing great the whole session then it came to sparring, the instructor said the new students are welcomed to spar if they want to otherwise they can sit and watch. The boy decided to spar and during his second round he got a kick to his head with no serious injury (allowed in Kyokushin) as he doesn't know how to block it then he started crying till the end of the session. My questions to you guys as instructors: 1- Do you allow new students to spar on their first session ? 2- If not, when you would start them sparring ? 3- How would you react to this situation ?

Thanks TooTall, good that the transition is working well. For me I am still in the same style "Kyokushin". Good luck with your journey.

Thanks Bushido , hope you get back in action soon

What a wonderful feeling to be back to the dojo after 2.5 years break. Tonight was my first session in the new dojo, it was lovely to get back in action and feel the aches & pain again The dojo is good, members are lovely & supportive. I spoke to the Sensie after the session and he explained to me that they give great attention/focus on sparring. The only strange thing I have noticed that there was no Kata tonight ! Hopefully I can keep the enthusiasm & continue my journey.

How can i start martial arts as a new person?
Safroot replied to mominacrmc's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Just step in a club/dojo near you and never be embarrassed from any thing. No one in the class expecting you to be professional from your first class Good Luck in your journey -
When I first saw my instructor he was teaching a kids class and I was impressed how good he was with kids in general & how he was encouraging / tuning their techniques !

Everyone with any heart disease would be scared at some point but believe me in most cases if you stick to your dictor's plan , you wil be able to live with it with no problems. I know many people have been living with it for years. Stressing over it won't help much, I know speaking anout it is easy but to do it in real life is hard but I am sure you can do it 👍🏻 Solid post!! Stress is not a favorable companion when ones dealing with Afib and everything else involved. Stress really gets me right after I've seen my Cardiologist, because while he's being honest, I'm freaking out about what he's talking about. I've been told to stop reading up on things and to just follow my doctors instructions....and I'm trying...to not read!! I don't sleep well, lately. It's 0340...and I'm STILL AWAKE!! I'm suppose to get a good nights sleep, but I don't end up going to sleep until 0600, and I'll sleep until 1200. Not good...I think! You really need to stress less & have enough sleep everyday, this will help controlling it. Tbh regarding reading about atrial fibrillation or any other disease in general when you have limited or no medical background, I totally recommend to stop reading for many reasons : 1- every person id different 2- disease progress is different from one individual to another 3- family history is different 4- concurrent diseases / other health conditions you have is different from others 5- your heart condition / efficency is not like anyone elses. During my years if practice I heard 1 very common complaint from many doctors: patients are coming already convinced that they have a diagnosis for their condition from Dr. GOOGLE 😂 & if the doctor's diagnosis is different then they start to discuss their diagnosis & may seek a second opinion. I know a doctor who nearrly kick those type of patients out of the consultation room 😂😂😂😂
