Is it for the Art or for Money ?
Safroot replied to Safroot's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I really like it & it's very true. Thanks -
In our Kyokushin dojo it was used in different situations & can mean : Hi or Got it (the instructions), goodbye & used when we enter or get out of the dojo. I thought it was a Kyokushin style thing until I read this post. Anyway it never annoyed me in the dojo

Hey Guys, Has anyone heard about Budoshinkai Karate Jitsu or it's founder Hanshi George Adams before ?! Just came across it today & couldn't find any info about it except on their school's website.

Hit the Makiwara wrong...that pain that you're feeling immediately thereafter...is what I'm referring too. When the Makiwara doesn't give you what you're seeking, don't blame the Makiwara, no, blame yourself. Ever hit a hanging bag wrong?? Same thing. Bag/Makiwara is to help you learn proper technique, BUT NOT JUST WITH THE PART OF YOUR BODY THAT CONTACTS THE MAKIWARA!! The Makiwara teaches the entire body to be correct in its execution at all times! Thanks for clarification sensei8 Osu

Martial Art Terminology In Class?
Safroot replied to Alan Armstrong's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
In the kyokushin dojo I was training in they used Japanese terminology & I used to struggle understanding it & was in a mess specially with combinations & that was the only time that the instructor might explain it to me in English ! -
I didn't have the chance to use it before so can I ask how ?! Well, I can't say I'm an expert, but I did put together this video a while back on some basics of working with the makiwara: That's a great video & answers my question, thanks for sharing it

According to your replies, I think my daughter is doing well in her classes

I agree & more than happy to pay extra as long as they teach a real art & don't compromise the art for the sake of money -

Good luck with the next trial. 6-7 for kids is a bit late, my daughter's class is 4-4:30 or 3:30-4

Did you overcome your fears? Not yet, I have trained for about 5 months back in 2014 & then stopped due to work/ family & will restart training again after Christmas hopefully. While I was training I was feeling really good but I wouldn't say I have overcomed my fears. At least health & fitness wise I was doing really good.

I have started karate mainly to improve my fitness levels and not to start medications when I was 30 . The other reason was for self defence as I always had a problem with self-confidence, being raised in a way of " Better stay away from trouble " has its marks in my life, I am always afraid to be involved in a fight / bullied or any sort of trouble, so starting karate was a big challenge to myself to see if I can overcome that confidence problem or not.

I think -according to your point of view- very very few dedicated people can but with the increasing number of such schools, I would say it will be very hard to find a good one. I wish I can meet MA instructor that has mastered 4 or 5 martial arts !

The same question returns to you again.
Safroot replied to Occam's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hi Occam, Firstly welcome to the forum. Secondly, if you can't make sure if the school is teaching a real art or not, I would stay away from it. I would give the Gym (second option) a go for couple of months to see if you can adapt or not, if you can that would be great to be among an enthusiastic team / environment, it will keep you motivated all the time. It's good to always keep looking for other dojos if you are not satisfied. Good luck with whatever option you choose -
That would be really interesting, she is full of energy & love playing. She will just love that sort of games
-
Solid advice, thanks MatsuShinshii
-
I would agree with you only if a good experienced instructor teaching each art but not 1 single instructor teaching 4 or 5 arts !
-
Thanks DWx will keep an eye & try to work on those points , You should see her kicking the boxing bag , usually I can't stop laughing in the waiting are but seriously we are always encouraging her. She actually liked it more than her ballet class which was a big surprise for me !

Is it for the Art or for Money ?
Safroot replied to Safroot's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Solid post MatsuShinshii, that's why it's not easy to find a school teaching the true art as most of the schools owners will be looking for money more than art, again for someone who train for living that's fair to care for money but the question is what you mentioned : will you compromise/modify the art for the sake of money or you will keep teaching the real art regardless ?! Note: I am not speaking about minor modification due to injuries or health problems!
