  1. Except Rickson The Gracies are not extreme athletes or even big and built...although they do have dedication and genius. SMR- If you have the mount or sidemount on someonw what keeps you from getting up? Are you assuming all grapplers end up on bottom? usually that happens when you fight someone much larger or stronger. Shotokanwarrior- BJJ automaticly looses it's effectivness "on the street" and karate takes over right? Shotokankarate_0- I was talking about what shotokan warrior said...He was implying that.
  2. So Karate relys on your opponet not expecting you to fight back? karate only works if you suprise someone?
  3. For those Looking for Videos Of Karateka fighting, I dug a few of Karate Practicioners Fighing in MMA/NHB.. Enjoy! -Hugo Duarte(luta Livre) vs Harold Howard(goju-ryu/white shirt) in A Brazilian Vale tudo fight http://216.40.244.4/misc/uvt3/uvt3_duarte_vs_howard.zip Hugo Duarte vs Gerry Harris(Kyokushin/Black top) http://216.40.244.4/misc/uvt2/uvt2_duarte_vs_harris.zip -Semmy Schilt(Kyokushin Background/tall guy) vs Akira Shoji http://216.40.244.4/pride/pride16/pride16_schilt_vs_shoji.zip -Semmy vs Antonio Rodrigo Noguiera(boxing/Bjj) http://216.40.244.4/pride/pride23/pride_23_nogueira_vs_schilt.zip Zane Frasier(karate/black guy) vs Nagasaki http://216.40.244.4/misc/shooto_vtp/vtp_frazier_vs_nagasaki.zip
  4. No one said it didint "work". but if you got locked in a Cage with a UFC level fighter do you think it would "work"? Popularity is a horrible Judge of a Stlyes Combat effectivness.
  5. Most people like to see something like Wing Chun or TKD because they look cool I like it when they throw in some MT stlye knees/kicks or some BJJ...
  6. That is one of the Disadvantages to Kyokushin, Most top level Kyokushin guys have cross trained in boxing. However when looking at it the advantages outweigh the disadvantages imo. Kyokushin guys are usually very tough and have very effective kicks. They are usually known for their body shots aswell.
  7. Yea, My instructor is usally pretty good at keeping everyone in line. When people stat to really pick it up he just asks them if they want him to put on the gloves for a while...
  8. Yes I see what your saying, A set of rules would be the hardest part. You would have to come up with something that does not limit either party unfairly. Kind of like what an organiztion like K-1 does.
  9. Does anyone Have a School that has an "open" night for student andf people from other schools/gyms to come in and spar? What do you think of this? My instructor wants to start doing this soon and I think it's great to spar with people of other stlyes and disciplines sou you can experience new things and you dont get used to sparring people who fight just like you do. What do you think the advantages and disadvantages to this are?
  10. Yeah, I got UFC 5 dvd n there was this guy who was a 5th Degree in TKD. Got his * kicked by some guy who did SAFTA or something. All this guy did was go upto him and repeatedly punched n elbowed him n the TKD guy didn't have a chance. Man that match was funny...he got pummeled John hess vs Andy Anderson....poor andy got eye gouged and beaten to a pulp.
  11. there was a guy who said his stlye was Bushi-ban at the last MMA fights here in Austin. it was his first fight i think, he did pretty well but got grounded and pounded into submission.
  12. It's never to late to start...i belive a striking art would go well with judo I would recomend boxing or Muay Thai.
  13. Just about every stlye can work...Some are just alot more likely too imo.
  14. I do agree that BJJ gives you one of the best chances against a larger/stronger opponet..
  15. Instead of listing the many good things about each stlye i will say the main draw back imo -BJJ-Great sumbmissions, and all round ground game...not Huge on takedowns but still better than most -Judo Lots of Throws and it does have ground work but not to the extent of BJJ and also many techniques rely on the Gi wreslting-Best in the world at takedowns/slams whitch can be devistating but very limited submissions and wrestlers dont like to be on their back Sambo-similar to BJJ but i have heard they dont have as much "live practice"
  16. The Problem with a firearm and most weapons in general is They are not always going ot be accesible in time...When/IF you are attacked it is usually by suprise...you usually dont have time to draw a weapon before you get some serious harm inflicted upon you.
  17. yes I usally hit the forehead aswell with straight punches..but hooks an uppercuts are harder not to hit with. But IMO it's very important to learn how to take a hit without getting scared/flinching/backing up etc.
  18. I thought Renzo kicked him in the forehead? I could have sworn i remember seeing it that way... Oleg also got KO'd very brutally by gary goodridge in pride After that he went on to teach a fight class at the Krav Maga national training center then he went into the movie business.
  19. I agree 100% However he Makes it a habit to tell everyone how easily he could Knock me out with a kick to the head, im too slow, I wouldent be a ble to hit him, etc...
  20. yes we wear headgear also. I just cant see sparring without punching to the face...
  21. yea, he has never sparred weith punches to the head so i guess he consideres that "dirty" fighting 16oz gloves let you punch harder without hurting your partner too much
  22. by one of my TKD Friends that when we spar If I fight dirty(punching to the Head) then he will KO me with a Kick to the forehead... Would You consider Punching to the Head with 16oz gloves dirty fighting?
  23. If you can pull it off go for it.. It's just risk vs Reward...A high Kick could easily end a fight. But there are many disadvantages to it... Usually you are not warmed up an stretched out tight clothing or shoes that dont work well for this. Slippery surface Getting it caught. hit in the groin Falling. I personally proabably wouldent try one unless they were bent over or something...I prefer other techniques that arent so risky if You do not succed.
  24. Bas Rutten Just posted this on another board when ...He touches on a few diffrent things.
  25. People "adapt" to them becuase 99% of todays fighters Study BJJ to some extent. It is basically a foundation you must have if you want to be succesful. Royces Last fight was In Japan against Kazushi Sakuraba, one of the most succesful and respected fighters in Japan. Royce fought him for 90 minutes before he had to throw in the towel becuase his leg was broken. Renzo Gracie, Rodrigo Gracie, Ryan Gracie and a few others are still around and doin pretty well against todays fighters.
