Full contact vs light sparring.
TJS replied to TJS's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
well yes and no...you cant toughen your face to take hits better(not resonably) but people who dont get hit in the face alot still flinch/react sometimes when face punches are thrown in. also you can learn to get used to the impact or shock..whatever you want ot call it. -

Full contact vs light sparring.
TJS replied to TJS's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
the only problem with that is i doubt ou punch to the face/head with the same contact...and thus you dont learn to take a hit aswell. -
he was smart..he would not have won the UFC but he would have started learning the ground game and takedown defenses..as a result he would have done well in his weight class . he did weight 128 pounds and as a result tito ortiz or tank would pin his against the cage and ground and pound him into a bloddy mess.

Full contact vs light sparring.

if you wear proper gear injury shoudent be a huge problem. The drawbacks of full contact are far outweighed by the good imo. 16 oz gloves changing the way you block and letting you use them as a shield would be one example of a negative. -
has any one used karate (shotokan) in the UFC???
TJS replied to Shotokan_Fighter's topic in Pro Fighting Matches and Leagues
sounds like a cool name to me -
First off I belive both have something to offer and should be practiced but I want to talk about why I belive Full contact(or heavy contact) is essential. Light sparring with no equipment on is something we do quite often, it gets you used to blocking and countering and has most of the benefits of regualr sparring. Here is the problem:Reaction EX:When I kick someone in the thigh with a round kick in light contact many people dont react to it or just put up a weak block. When I kick someone in the thigh in heavy contact they react becuase if they dont block it it hurts...Once you land a good one people start thinking about the kicks and it becomes alot easier to punch them in the head and the reverse is true. EX: In light sparring some people just keep comming in and throwing despite the fact that I have touched/hit them in the head/face about 5 time...in heavy contact they would have stoped doing it after the first shot and realize they need to change something. same goes for most things...then you are punching someone in the head they are going to cover up and leave the body open..or if you work the body they may react and leave the head open for a few shot. This goes for almost every combo. People never learn about these things unless they put the pads on and get some serious contact in. There are obviously negatives to this aswell but i belive the benefits outweight the negatives. Thoughts?

wing chun vs muay thai
TJS replied to kle1n's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Sure..I think MT is more effective because A) MT and WC have had Challenge matches in the past and it was usally dominated by MT fighters...in a bad way B) MT fighters have been willing to put it on the line for the last 50 years against top fighters all over the world and usually come out on top C) MT dominates mixed Standup events like K-1 Kickboxing. D) MT is the standup training meathod of choice by just about every top MMA/NHB FIght team in the world(Brazilian top team, Chute box, millitech, etc) F) MT has been able to transition into todays NHB fighting and many of todays top chmpion use it to win..this is something WC never has been able to do. E) MT fighters generally learn quicker and they are usally tough as nails. F) I have heard some stories from varios people about WC and MT fighters mixing it up... thats it just off the top of my head.. Im really not trying to bash WC..i think it's a cool stlye and would work against your avg joe..I just dont think it works against A trained fighter very well. -
why does every love muay thai?
TJS replied to kle1n's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Because it is one of the most effective standup fighting stlye in the world and proves it continuesly. -

Then he would have accepted the public challenge to him extended by the gracie family. and there isint a "Fact" that boxers are the best punchers. what does that have to do with anything it wouldent matter what stlye you practiced if you came across 3 kimos. yea and I could beat Michael Jordan in a basketball game..i just choose never to compete. You notice the rue greates Such as Mas Oyama and Helio Gracie are the ones that goes out and do it instead of talking about it. Find me 1 shotokan karateka winning a single major moxed event in the last 5 years..you wont. 99% is figure of speach. -
http://www.bullshido.us/dl_goto.asp?id=64 Here is the video. notice how he even tries to eye gouge him a few times..puting his arm right in place for a vicious arm bar oh and top of that he tries a pressure point and it's on a conctere floor..that eliminates just about every common excuse. Kirves I wasant commenting on your post about the trained fighter thing, I was talking about Shotokans comment. should they put two karate guys against him or what? BJJ is not good against multiple attacker and it has never claimed ot be..most schools claim to be able to beat multiple attackers when they dont do a very good job against one. Shotokan karate_o The problem with that is that if a Good grappler wants you on the ground thats where you will go. the opposite is not usually true..As in a striker has alot more trouble keeping things on his feet..thats just how it is.

I would hate to rely on my Opponet being a drunked no skill bum. sounds like a bad philosophy to me..prepare for the worst and the rest will be easy. I would sincerely suggest finding a Local Muay Thai gym..they might give you a better example than most TKD students.. Depends on what your definition of "holding your own" Have you ever seen the video if the Shotokan Blackbelt "holding his own" against a BJJ stylist?

"traitor"..this is what leads to blind stlye loyalty. Bo be the best fighter you can be you should cross train No on in the world is better on the ground than BJJ and thats a fact. while you spend years searching for an answer in a standup stlye you will never find it. -
I agree for the most part.

nice post. the only thing i would addd is that if someone can defend precision punches and combos then a haymaker is usually not going to pose alot of danger.

I havent Studied TKD in about 9 years. Trust me plenty of the critisizm of TKD comes from me Krav Maga. I do defend BJJ alot because i think it's succes speaks for itself..thats not something you can just ignore. I have trained in BJJ to some extent..A little under Relson Gracie and one of his instructors as well as being a training partner for someone in preperation of a NHB fight. No will power can mean alot..i dont think All BJJ fighters will beat all Karateka...But most things being equal I have seen what will happen almost every time. I respect your enthusiasm and willingness to try things...but sometimes that means loosing the whole Stlye loyalty...train in what works. Facts and statistics dont lie..why would you want to forget them? im sure as a krateka you would want to...Royce gracie winning 5 UFC' as the smallest fighter wasant a fluke...it does mean something.
