I can only echo Wastelanders advice. All things will come in time, suppleness is the most difficult aspect to get back. Because you never saw that one leave. The body will adapt pretty quickly , 12 weeks given by most authorities, for major improvements to begin to appear. Good luck in your training.

Hello Kindj and welcome to the forum.

I think this comes more from the fact that three major figures in the early Naha-Te side of Karate, died in their 60's Kanryo Higa(shi)onna : Chojun Miyagi : Kenwa Mabuni.

Hell and welcome to the forum.

It's excellent. Used to course and classes in the past. Still use things I picked there in my personal routine.

It's relative, some people are more supple than others. I always was fairly stiff, so always work at it. Some don't need to put anything like the effort I have too. That also changes with age - the older you get , the more you must do. Plus, how do you define it. I do stretching before and after every training session ( see above) , but I also do a really serious , in-depth and detailed, stretching session once to twice a week

It is all in the Kata , but it is NOT a secret Bruce001 . It isn't obvious, you need guiding etc, but that's is all. as I said before, the issue is the instructor. Don't damn Shorin Ryu because his lacks the ability or depth of understanding.

Well done mal103 -
When I was a kid, it was 40 minutes and 2 buses. Learned to drive, down to 20 minutes. Married and moved to first house, 15 minutes. Several moves later, I've got it down to a 5 minute drive or 15 minute walk.

I think the problem is (sadly) with your instructor, rather than with Nagamine. I study Goju Ryu, all the Shorin Ryu I've encountered have worked in exactly the same way as we do, just with different kata. Any differences were of emphasis rather than principle.

What part of the hand do you prefer to strike with?
andym replied to Harkon72's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I like single knuckle punches, but they take time, will i have that time ? Nakadaka Ken is my prefered, as it just folds back into the fist and becomes Seiken, if it goes wrong. But the main striking surfaces for are seiken and Seiryuto, the outside edge (non-thumb side) of the wrist . I prefer it over Shuto. -
Hello Karate_John and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on the success as well.

Goju Ryu doesn't use them.

Aggression?
andym replied to Charlie44's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
I can only repeat the advice already offered. Aggression is not anger. In competitions aggression is to take the initiative, this always gives you the advantage - you are setting the agenda of the match, instead of setting a trap and hoping the opponent walks into it. Or hoping you react quickly enough to counter, and the artificial set up of competition, most of us are just not quick enough. -
I'm with ps1 on this one. There is a big difference between challenging a dan grade, or even the instructor, and requesting to spar with them. Though I can understand it being a 'no-no' to an instructor. But, why no explanation to students ? Are these rules well known, posted up etc ? This is important as the etiquette changes from school to school, even within a style, never mind an art. I'm sorry , but in both the case of sensei8 and Tkd&bjj's tales. The more I've thought about it, the more I would view it as arrogant bullying.

A belated congratulations, Solidair.

This is the difference between a kyu grade and a dan grade in my book. A kyu grade can get away with purely training in the dojo. A dan grade must commit to training above and beyond this. And not just in the build up to pass the grading, this to me is the commitment to the dan grade.

'Kuro Obi' (Black Belt) came out 2007. But this, like a few, very few others, come out of Japan. Remember how this period and it's movies are known - 'The Kung Fu Boom'. Karate had been around in the back ground for 10 years or more, like wise Judo. Fashion is driven by 'new', neither of those two were new to the public, Kung Fu was. Karate had been in films in the 1960's, from crap Elvis films and poor spy spoofs etc. To the epic training scene in James Bonds 'You Only Live Twice'. To referenced in 'Get Carter' were Micheal Caine's central character beats someone up, then recommends him to join a Karate club to get better. At the end of the day, we were and are a known quantity, the public want new. Ju Jitsu : Judo : Karate : Kung Fu : Kick Boxing : Free Style : Mauy Thai : BJJ : MMA - the list will grow as to what is old hat, as BJJ and MMA are over taken by fashion. That's all it is fashion.
