Happy New Year and all the best to everybody on KF.

That's not your problem, nor is it the seniors problem. It's their duty, out of courtesy to you and respect to the seniors, who taught them when they were beginners. I look at it as repaying a debt, they are in debt to the Dojo, Sensei and Senpai, for taking them as beginners and being involved in the creation of them as seniors (senpai). This dept you will owe them and repay it when you become a Senpai and help a new student.

My experience within Goju Ryu is that there is no set 'kata' nor even fixed order to any Jumbi undo, Hojo or Kigu Undo. Here's a couple of youtube links.

I agree with the advice of MasterPain. It's so much the style, as the approach and aim of training that needs to be looked at. Two schools within the same style, may have totally different approaches. It's down to the individual school and instructor, so you need to check them out - phone calls and web sites are of limited value in this. Visit the club, that's my advice. Good luck.

Traditional MA; No Longer Respected!?!
andym replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I think it's relative. I travel around Britain alot, on training courses for work. Always take the chance to train where I am, even MMA gyms etc. And never really had a 'Your stuff don't work, traditional arts are rubbish', confrontation or even conversation. But I just want to train - I'll do there class, so they see an ability and willingness, before the topic comes up. The odd you kid may start and are usually stopped by the experienced students. I'm finding an interest, a lot of questions. Plus, alot of coaches miss the respect and discipline of a traditional class. -
Congratulations.

Shotokan first dan
andym replied to quinteros1963's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
First congratulations on passing, but I have to ask a question. Why Shotokan AND Goju Ryu ? It isn't a go at you, I've seen this lately, well for 20 years, happen. Is it to get the Okinawan connection ? I'll do a thread on this as well, think this is an interesting subject and may get some interesting responses. -
Don't go anywhere near Go-Kan-Ryu ! GKR are to my mind the epitome of a McDojo organisation (look it up). How can you train for self defense in a 'non-contact environment ' (? !); which is what GKR promote. As to Chito Ryu, it is an authentic Okinawan Karate style (not a dubious sales organisation). There isn't any over here in GB, so I can't give advice from experience, other than to say it has a good reputation given what is written about it. All the best in your studies.

Well done. -
There are two approaches or forms of makiwara training. The first and most simple : Rigid. That makiwara on the floor, screwed to the wall or what ever. When struck, it begins the process of conditioning the striking surface's. That's as far as that use goes. The other : flexible. That makiwara pad on a semi-flexible post. This enables techniques to be practiced - with follow through. Working stance and joints etc.

Are you in US or in GB ? I ask as the Isshin in the US, is of Okinawan origin : Kata and Bunkai based training, along with Kobudo. Here in GB, it's a free style sports system, developed by 'Ticky' Donovan, more free sparring based. Both have good reputations though. They styles within the art of Karate. TKD is an art, like Karate, sub-divided in organisations and styles. Sorry to seem negative, but TKD has the largest disparity of quality within an art that I have come across. Some are brilliant within a style and some - within that same style - are very poor. So you need to look at the TKD schools on an individual basis. I've found this to the case, both here in GB, and on my visits to the US. Sorry forgot to add, welcome to the forum.

Learning Theory and Martial Arts
andym replied to tallgeese's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Been on the inside of all that. I was just lazy and awkward, because I could tell my teachers anything they wanted to know ; but couldn't write it down to an acceptable standard. Yes things have changed, improved. I saw that with my son. But, what happened to me remains, I had to find my own way...against the schools pressures. I left with nothing, what I have now, is no thanks to them. Do I sound bitter...you bet. -
Hello and welcome to the forum. Hope we can help and encourage.

I have to ask the question, should 10 year old's be doing Jiyu Kumite ? Then again, I old fashioned and think 10 year old's shouldn't be allowed to be Dan grades either...so. Sorry I can't be positive about it.

Excellent news Harkon72. I rate Yoga very highly and though I no longer attend a class, try to practice it as part of my weekly routine. I've always found it very helpful for martial artists.
