As too grades Seiunchin Kata covers with us, 4th kyu (purple belt in our Dojo), just the Kata. 3rd Kyu (first level of brown belt) the Kata and Bunkai. 2nd Kyu of brown belt , the same to mature the student. Obviously this only relates to Seiunchin part with in the grading, which covers many areas.

Hi SolidAir, I'm at Sensei Tony Christian's Dojo in Wigan, Lancs. We're under the B.K.A. , but independent , just a few clubs attached run by some his students. We have an unorthodox approach to Goju Ryu.

Seiunchin Kata over laps several grades within the Goju ryu dojo i am a member of. First grading is just the kata, next kata and it's bunkai.

I think the Edwards , Farrell battle , may have had something to do with it as well.

Sadly powerful and tragically true. We care about the bruises and the physical. Yet, it's the words that hurt the most and last forever.

How can you learn a curriculum in a day ?

This may have some bearing on this subject, and illustrate that the time spent conditioning was relative to the student and related to the job they did. it's a tale from a friend who visited China in the 1990's to train. He was surprised by how little conditioning training many of the students did - even push up's and sit up's etc. Yet one guy spent vastly more time than anyone else at it, he was a school teacher with fairly good English, as luck would have it. This is what he told my friend about the subject. He , as teacher, had a fairly inactive job, so he needed to work on his conditioning. Many of the others had factory jobs or worked the fields, they'ed already done their conditioning at work ! My friend then found out that the working conditions were similar too what we in the west had in the 1950's or before ! Really hard physical labour. Not some thing any of us had expected when he told us. So, if we look back at the volume of Hojo Undo and Jumbi Undo done in the past, this tale may prove valid, the time may be related to how hard a job the student had ?

I must admit I was very negative towards the sporting use of the martial arts, and it has had a negative impact on them. Just look what the Olympics have do to Judo ! Note I did compete in a small way in the 1980's and early 1990's. But now I feel there are more damaging influences on the martial arts , namely - Action Movies !

Do you just let someone punch in the solar plexus a certain amount of times. The solar plexus cannot be conditioned, it's a gap in the musculature, that's why it's an important target. I agree with Harkon72, use a medicine ball, thrown at or dropped onto the torso. But, only when the body is well conditioned by exercise.
