rb replied to MunkyBoy's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
learn to shoot -
Bond. Batman is just some backyard vigilante. Bond has the backing of the govenment and the nato bloc (and occasionally russia). Better toys, better women, better lines.

Am I To Old To Join Judo Now?
rb replied to Judo Warrior's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Great, incoherent rambling - another sano? Anyhow no you are by no means too old. A guy at my club started when he was 39 and is still going at 50. Sensei is almost 70. The only drawback is if you are too young in which case things like shimewaza and kensetsuwaza are not allowed. -
For the most part I really liked it. Lots of battles, miranda otto, liv tyler (yippee), little to no thinking required. MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS However the film really falls flat in the the last half hour (best guess at time as it felt like an eternity). To say it drags in this section is an understatement. I'm not sure if they even used an editor on this portion of the film. There are a few ways i think they could of cut down the film a little: -kill gimli, merry and pippin. 2 films of comic relief are enough for me and i don't need a third. -cut down smeagol rants or talk faster. -only reminisce about the shire once. babling about it more than that is just filler. -cut down on love scenes between frodo and fatboy (sam). Every scene with them is basically stare in each others eyes, tell em i love you, the shire etc. Just kiss already or get going with the quest. -seriously just get up the volcano already! -less braveheart scenes with the rohan warriors. just get to the killing already. -fatboy and frodo were taking so long on the volcano that if they died while climbing up onward I would have been happy. I would have ended it with frodo and fatboy lying on the rocks with the lava around them. As they profess their love the lava overtakes them and the audience is spared from super cheese ending.

KWN Seriously, don't sweat the little things.

Could you narrow the question a little. Some people might not read the other christian thread. Otherwise I don't see a problem with christians doing martial arts.

What is BY FAR the grossest thing you ever eaten?
rb replied to Martial_Artist's topic in General Chat
Given no choice i'd say squid. I eat it faily often and it can be prepared many ways - steamed, deep fried, raw, sauteed etc. Also eat beef liver, intestine, kidney with no remorse. I'm not a big fan of lung due to the texture but it absorbs flavours nicely.I've eaten dog and pigs blood too. I've always wanted to try brain. -
"This one time...at band camp..." Nice story, but trumpet is tops

Eh, well i'm a canuck like the post starter. I won't offer any of my snow like ZR440 as it is too valuable - snow forts, snow balls, snowmen, never ending crashmat etc... I love the winter time as it gives a change up on outdoor activities. Boggining, skiing, curling and hockey -Even snow biking or ripping around on a ski-doo. Throw in some hot chocolate and you're set. As for the person stating they were from the armpit of the universe, I must disagree. That is what us Canadians would refer to as Saskatchewan.

I'd rather not wear a gi but when i do i use a heavy weight.

I think that your creative writing skills get better and better with each passing day.

Although the video is pretty hazy the throw is not seoinage. The fan jumps on stage with his hands above his head as he approaches maynard. He pumps his arms once perhaps exalting something like "you rock". Afterwhich maynard feints a hug, wraps his right arm around the fan's back as he reversed into him. He also grabs with his left to the fan's right forearmn and proceeds to throw him. This would be more consistent with o goshi.

phh1nic - or at least a safety zone. the sparring they were flying into the crowd at every second exchange. stl Are you talking about point sparring and creative forms, if so I can see your point. I think Sevenstar is curious of your opinion because the arts he mentioned are widely practiced as sports.

I think Johnny Depp played that personality well. Unfortunately I don't think it fit well with the movie. All the other pirates were masculine and ruthless as opposed to his topsy turvy rambling charater. I thought Depp as one of the alpha pirates would of contributed better by being the template from where all the other pirates behavior stems. I actually found Depp's character started to become annoying half way through the film.

I was also under the impression that there was to be an explanation of the science behind martial arts. While the forms showed creativity and amazing dedication I found the show to be distracting and uninformative. The show is too busy as it tries to invoke an emotional attachment to Matt Mullens as he vies to reclaim former championship glory. This is to be achieved while the viewer is bombarded with cheesy matrixesque graphics and MA toughguy oneliners. A laughable one is when they start talking about point sparring where "theory gets a bloody nose". The more he (Matt) talked the more petty his martial arts goals seemed. It is disappointing that a lot of martial art specials notably on national geographic and discovery channel are in my opinion so poorly produced.

i want to learn to grapple
rb replied to guest's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Perhaps your local college or university will have a wrestling team. At the university i attend the program is free for anyone that wants to join and you can compete (for the school) if you are a full time student. It's a good deal as you get taught by certified national level coaches, facility pass for a year, you're tested for endurance and strength by techinicians and told how to improve. The club also has physio ppl to help if you get injured. Of course it will vary from school to school but check it out. The workout has a good intensity and will get you into good shape in a hurry. The moves are fairly easy to learn and the constant drilling allow a student to apply them quickly. Judo at the university is about 240 US a year, 50-60 bucks for a starter gi and 10 bucks for association registration. Clubs outside the university are more expensive - around 75-150 more per year. In contrast to wrestling I found the moves to be slightly more complex but still not impossible to learn. Judo also has lots of drilling and sparring making the turnaround for techiques fairly quick. Competitions are held locally about once a month. Don't know anything about BJJ. There hasn't been a stable school in the area. -
