First off if you don't want to get hit then don't do the thing you just did wrong again. That makes one less reason to get hit. The training in past involved martial artists starting training at a very young age. Discipline was estabished through corporal punishment and endless drilling. Eventually the student would better in skills and would not need such constant reminders. This is perhaps how your instructor trained and will in turn train his students in a similar way. If you choose to train with someone you can't just pick and choose what part of their teaching you like or what content you choose to absorb. If the thought of a caning is undesirable then I suggest you look for a new teacher.

experts! need help with decision
rb replied to kolhoz's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Question for you, Why do you want to learn on your own with no interaction ?Learning martial arts is hard enough with a good instructor. Without one you'll develop many bad habits and techniques. If this is a money issue look at it this way: Tapes, books are expensive and do not teach anything of value imo. Net research and going to the library takes time. Time that you can spend working for money and paying for training which I think is more beneficial as a whole. Sparing with a partner allows you to better understand the techniques and your weaknesses. I don't know of many arts that teach religion as part of their curiculum. For instance shaolin monks are buddists. Some monks also practice shaolin boxing. However for the reverse, a shaolin practicioner does not need to be a buddist. I think you are looking for an external style of martial art. Something like boxing, karate, kick boxing, wrestling. I don't understand the ultimate body control portion of your question. -
At one time my buds and I were thinking of making a catapult. During that time I saw a documentary on the war in vietnam and how the us used single artillery rounds that released dozens of flechettes.I designed something along simliar lines except the launcher was a balista. If you gets your hands on a decent cad program you can not only visualize the design in 3d but also carry out some analysis.

100 but my mouse was waving back and forth on a few screens. They should give 2 seconds instead of 4 or at least give a time breakdown.

What weapon do you think is most practical to a street fight
rb replied to BlueDragon1981's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
Knives or telescoping batons. These are easy to conceal and as the owner you have trained with them. These techniques are transferable to pipes, wood and other debris. I also wouldn't discount the pistol as an effective weapon. A person wielding a stick doesn't invoke as much fear as a person with gun although they both have potential to do lethal amounts of damage. -
Don't some televangelists do this sorta thing too. I watched some videos and they reek of scam. I found it amusing how this site put the no touch ko with a whole bunch of gag vidoes. http://www.kyushoworld.net/index_files/page0005.htm Here's another one. http://www.kyushojitsutuite.com/knockouts.html

Interesting post KickChick. I hope they hold their martial artist to the same high standards as their other performers. It would make for a spectacular show. They are actually a Canadian company although they have grown to incorporate performers from around the globe. I don't know if I agree with the Wheel of life connection. The show was pretty bad.

Yuck. I was on a work term in Louisiana and ordered some iced tea. When I took a sip I nearly spat it out . Guess it's a cultural gap between some parts of the states. Another thing I couldn't quite get used to was mayo and fries.

Well, Kirves I agree but I think that discussion would be better in a separate post. For benedictbm I wish you luck on future training as a martial artist.

How do you position your front foot when you spar?
rb replied to koreantiger81's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Although my foot doesn't point exactly at my opponent all the time, I'd say option A) and not as extreme as C). -
I don't study karate - mantis boxing. At the club i attend you don't recieve a white sash for quite a long time. After white sash there is black. We don't wear our sashes unless we're doing a demo. I guess that's the beauty of drawstring sweat pants. As for progress, you can see where you are by the techniques and forms that you have learned.

What is your favorite kick for street defense?
rb replied to Tiger's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
groin kick side kick to mid section or kick out knee joint. -
1. Do you use protective gear? If so what? Yes, boxing gloves sometimes. We're looking at headgear so we can implement more head strikes. Not everyone uses a mouthguard. 2. How hard contact do you use? Do you KO each other often? Injuries? Within reason and control. We don't try to injure or break bones. Body hits are hard enough to wind a person or lay him out occasionally(still conscious). I've seen stars a few times but haven't seen any KO's. Sweeps are done pretty much all out otherwise they are pretty infective. Occasionally there will be a few bruises recieved/given and very rarely split lips, and bloody noses. 3. What rules do you use? Punch the face? Groin? Grabbing? Wrestling? Submissions? No punching or straight kicks to the face. Throat punches are avoided. We can do light backhands or spin/round kicks to the head but we generally avoid them. No groin shots unless your opponent is trying to sub you. Even then it is usually only a light backhand, palmslap to stun - not full power. Grabbing, locking, subs, wrestling allowed. If we catch sight of an opponents back delivering a nice loud palm slap brings a chuckle from the teacher. 4. Don't forget to mention your style! Long arm mantis boxing

as quoted above by KickChick, the gun katas were based on the analysis of thousands of gun fights. The practioner who studies these katas can then stand in the spot that is statically least probable to contain bullets. Apparently in the movie this spot is in front of a line of men with automatic weapons. Another place is the centre of a circle of men, also with automatic weapons. As a movie element it serves to elevate the cleric characters into almost invincible enforcers. I don't think it has a real life application If perhaps you examine markmanship, tactics, and the psy and physical conditioning necessary to kill then I think that as a whole could be considered a kata/formless martial art.

Mantis vs. Bushido Kai
rb replied to MantisWarrior's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
If you haven't already I'd ask your instructor about sparring at another school. This is a matter of etiquette and not about gaining fighting tips. If you can pass this hurdle then your teacher, who is familiar with your capabilities is perhaps best suited for giving you sparring pointers. Other than that, keep in mind that the Kyokushin students possess the same basic blocks, punches, and kicks that you do. You have to ask yourself if you are proficient in using those techniques. As for advanced techniques it is hard to know all that your opponent knows without studying their style and the particular person. good luck. -
Does anyone take Mantis
rb replied to MantisWarrior's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
I hope your teacher is not teaching you a lot of the seven star that he/she picked up. Seven Star is a northern boxing style. Anyhow I practice long arm mantis.
