Driving Problem
rb replied to Smarter Child's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Unless you're talking 20 mins away by freeway I do not think a bike ride will take hours. My club is 20 kms away which takes about 20 mins by car or around 30 mins by bike at a reasonable pace. You arrive before class prewarmed and loose. Some parts of the city I can get to faster by bike by cutting across parks and river trails not accessible to motor traffic. Also during rush hour travel time is almost equivalent. When cycling safety gear is paramount. Helmet, front and rear lights and knowledge of motor vehicle laws. -
The only films I enjoyed of his were shaolin temple and tai chi master. Jet li films are very heavy on the wire effects and the diaologue is horrible even in chinese.

Driving Problem
rb replied to Smarter Child's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
20 mins is nothing. Sometimes I drive 1.5 hours to go cycling. Get your parents to drive you the first few times so they can get to know the environment too. Pull the "This is something I want to do and would appreciate your support" speal. Make some friends and carpool. Other than that. - ride a bike - take a cab - take the bus - walk/run -
UFC 41: Onslaught Thoughts

Lindland was in a really bad position at the end. I'm glad he won - I really don't like Baroni. Don't like mir either but he has the skills. -
First off, See a doctor and get a physical. Discuss your diet, your lifestyle and how you want to change it. Don't set karate class as a goal right now. Try something else like "I can do 20-30 mins of exercise without feeling winded". Work slow and take days off to let your muscles and joints recover. Cycling is a good way to lose weight and gain endurace if you know how to adjust and ride a bike properly. Make sure your bike is properly adjusted or it will lead to sore butt, neck, back, wrists and knees. Also make use of your drivetrain to keep your heart in the proper intensity zone. No matter how dorky you look -WEAR A HELMET !

texture can be modified by cooking. At least eat lots of fruit. Or get inventive. Make beet sorbet or carrot and orange slushies or something.

I am curious how this testing was done. Are we talking single bones being broken on a support and what is the moisture content ? The thing about boards and bones is that they are anistropic -that is they don't exhibit the same properties in all directions. During breaking, boards are carefully aligned and strikes are applied in the transverse direction of the board which is the weakest. I don't have the numbers handy but bone is also weaker in the transverse direction. Also be known that bone has been measured to be strongest in the longitudinal direction. So as you move angularly closer to the longitudinal orientation it becomes harder to break. I mention this because I don't think a direct transvere direction stike is always the case so the strength of the bone is intermediary. That's just a single bone. There are two in the forearm. They connected by flexible tissue and also encased in muscle, fat and skin. That makes the forearm quite deformable which serves to disperse incoming energy, quite possibly leaving not enough to fracture the bone(s). Not to mention that the arm is not bound to supports like a holder or concrete blocks and can move with the blow further reducing the energy available for fracture. I don't think the energy absorption and fracture mechanics of the body can be that easily approximated. Note pressure is a measure of force over area.

Curious, How is this a good thing YellowSnow ?

Yeah in the summer. The paint freezes in the winter and temperature performance of co2 systems is highly variable. I love mercy killing people when I have an empty gun. Other than that the only beef I have is the lack of hand to hand.

Yeah, we start with sticks as to not injure each other....too much.

Turning your back doing a technique
rb replied to Adonnis's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
This must be a standard lesson in karate. The problem with spining techniques is that while many people can excute them with a good degree of competence, they still remain ignorant of their correct application. -
Where are these board to body equivalences coming from ?

Driving is fun for a while. Biking is just as fast in the city.

Have you ever thrown a punch or kick, have you wrestled with your friends or classmates? If you have you're ready to spar from day one. In a fight you're going to use what you know. You can start adding the karate techniques after you've learned them. I would recommend you actually spar with a more advanced student or the teacher as they have more control. They should spar at your level and not beat the crap out of you.

It's a front stance. I'm not too crazy about the back foot but maybe this is how other stylists do it.

Please do not punch walls, concrete, or try to embed metal shavings into your hands. This is not iron palm training. Iron palm training takes years to build up and must be done in a systematic way.

BKJ1216 Why don't you take the classes first and then ask some questions. You are going to do yourself a great diservice by mixing and matching advice from the internet.

the reason a bullet thrown at someone doesn't do much damage is because it has little energy. If you approximate the energy = to kinetic energy then you have KE = (mV^2)/2 V= velocity m=mass because the velocity is squared the effect on energy is signifigant. In this case a bullet fired from a gun has enough energy to penetrate the body. In striking, a speedy kick or punch has more energy which can be imparted. In grappling strength is handy when you don't know the techniques. Most grappling is designed for use of mechanical advantage. also F=ma not F=mV.
