Warrior culture stuff in different settings
MasterPain replied to MasterPain's topic in General Chat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC6_-xhBv54 Here's a really cool Wai Kru. -
This is something most of us Americans haven't seen. The New Zealand All Blacks rugby team start their games with a war dance. Based on the Maori haka. In this example it is responded to with an Aboriginal war dance. Post other examples of Warrior culture in modern society.

Favourite prison fight movies
MasterPain replied to Heiwa Bushi's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Should have used some of that time contemplating the egocentrism that made the conflict that landed him there seem necessary, then tried to live in a manner more harmonious with his fellow man........ Nah, get buff and kick butt!! -

Big Stan. Best prison fight movie ever. Is that it's own genre now? -
Half hour of that is enough.

Ugg, it's Sunday, overachievers. I guess I'm going to go play Xbox in a horse stance to maintain self esteem. Yoga... Can you teleport and spit fireballs yet?

I am not a licensed therapist, and I'm far too cynical to give you a Stewart Smalley speech. I am however friends with a retired therapist. Here's his view, and I agree. You need to think about why you hate yourself i.e. specific reasons. Then ask yourself if you could hate someone else for those same reasons. Usually the answer is no. I notice the idea was followed by the sentence "I hate my life." It is important not to define yourself by your situation. It's fine to mad at yourself, as long as that is a motivator to change the behavior that causes you to feel that way. However, if you are mad at yourself for a behavior, then feel helpless to change it, then repeat the behavior, then are mad at yourself for it you need to change your motivation. Imagine a better behavior ,imagine the results of the new behavior, then DO it that way. With practice, things will improve. You can't always change what is happening, but you can decide how you think. feel and act. You have to take ownership and responsibility for your feelings and actions, or you will be like dust in the wind, going where you are led with no direction of your own and no identity. Most importantly, if these feelings persist and are strong, talk to a therapist. Everyone has an occasional bout with depression, but when it's chronic or lasts a long time there is no shame in getting help. I know someone who did and is now living a happy life. I also had a friend who didn't. Take care of yourself.

5/28 1 mile walk on road, 2 miles through woods and muddy fields. GS, who did you find to play with yesterday?

Thanks. We have very few students over here, and years of training. So it's nice to have a medium in which we can share with others.

Testing in October
MasterPain replied to JusticeZero's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
I would love to see a Capoeira grading. Lots of culture there. -
Read up on David Parker Ray. That's just one example. As Herman Munster said in Pet Semetary, "Sometimes dead is better."

What to do if a teen starts losing interest?
MasterPain replied to mal103's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Agreed. To force your kids to participate in something they no longer have an interest in will just make them end up hating it. Let them decide what they want to do. If it's to leave class, then that's their choice. They might, or might not, decide they miss it down the road a ways. I agree with you both. Also, anything above 3rd or 2nd kyu should be a passionate martial artist who can hardly imagine life without it. -
This stuff.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRpBAHDR1-Q Here ya go. This is at the end of class and just showing a concept. This should be done with headgear, shinguards, elbow pads and such so you can blast each other a bit. Edit: I'm the bald guy who does the Roy Nelson diet.

I'm uploading a video, I'll put up here in a few minutes. So many disarm videos are a simple grab and take it away type thing. It's a nice idea, but trained live rarely works that way. If it does, great. If they try to retain the weapon, you need to be causing some pain to create advantage, all while controlling the direction of the muzzle, and trying to gain an advantage in leverage. Sound hard? It is. If you are having 100 percent success, your uke is being to easy on you.

Na. Being broken down while still young would be bad for your image. Beating college kids for years to come is good for your image.

I have friends who have used them. They are good for most activities, but when kicking things your toes can get caught on the inside of the shoe. I don't know how to explain it better than that, but apparently it hurts. I recommend these. https://www.centurymartialarts.com/Apparel/Shoes/Century_Footwear.aspx
