  1. Youtube street fights seem like a good place to see the unwashed masses fight. For somewhat washed masses, watch amateur mma. For cleaner masses watch pro mma.
  2. Smashlight?
  3. 7/11 several rounds of MMA sparring- drawing styles from a hat Then a few rounds of Nerdy Kombat ( defined here, https://www.karateforums.com/nerdy-kombat-vt40780.html )
  4. BJJ and Sanda Sanda is kickboxing and throws. Although there are not Sanda gyms around me, what I've seen of the sport is similar to my type of stand up fighting. The stance is lower than typical Muay Thai stance, due to the emphasis on throws. As a short, heavy guy, I'd rather lay on you than kickbox.
  5. Why use an art designed for unarmed vs sword for unarmed comp when there is a perfectly good unarmed vs unarmed art? Use it to take away Road Rage Guy's crowbar.
  6. Seriously though, he stands too sideways then brings his feet too close together. Being too sideways makes his lead hand weak, his rear hand can't reach a target. His leg is a great target for low kicks. Bring your feet together, except before a longer range kick is a bad idea, as it makes for a weak base. Notice that a shove sent him flying? He has no idea what he's doing with his hands. A cool looking pose and a good fighting stance are not the same thing.
  7. Are you the guy on the right?
  8. We should succeed from Chicago. Grumble, grumble, thoughts not agrreeable with forum rules....ect.ect.ect.
  9. 10. Crap......... When you visit the hometown I'm the only other heavyweight. I'm going to have to get on it.
  11. I like the strong side forward, largely because it makes my takedowns and transition into clinch easier. Also, my left hand is uncoordinated and best left in the back to protect my jaw.
  12. Dit Dat Jaw is Mandarin for IcyHot. Shinguards are Universal Language for a Good Idea. The accidental hard contact of 2 tibias is not the time for conditioning. That's what shinai and glass bottles are for. I don't bruise easily, but I've been told that witch hazel is good. It's by the rubbing alcohol at most stores.
  13. I would rather be treated by a vet with current continued education than an MD who received a doctorate 20 years ago and hasn't been in practice since.
  14. Warcraft?! That requires human interaction and makes you deal with the fact that someone is always stronger. Final Fantasy is much better. You don't have to deal with carbon based lifeforms. Collect enough McGuffins and plot devices and you can NoobPwn a guy who throws planets at you, while saying "I am become Death, the destroyer of Worlds." You don't have to pay monthly. Plus you get to ride a giant chicken. Forget the Horde, join the Cult of Kefka and create a monument to non-existence. I don't care if that's an oxymoron, it's awesome. Kupo.
  15. Someone once said "They're not (derogatory term for weak individuals), they're customers. Not sure how I feel about that. The idea of pushups as a punitive measure is great for a kids class. I can't imagine it among my peers. We just tell people that if they act like a jerk, we'll throw them down the fire escape.
  16. You work in a jail, so the law, unless you seriously violate your position, is on your side. That makes a huge difference. Especially around here, where people favor law enforcement and consider you guilty until proven innocent. My county doesn't understand burden of proof. At least that's my understanding as foreman of a jury in an assault charge. There is a young woman with a clean record because I convinced eleven people that being charged does not make you guilty. The ignorance of the people who will judge you is the best reason to avoid a fight.
  17. The easy answer is that fighting is bad. However, threats are used as a way to change your behavior. What right does another person have to do so? A few years back, I said hello to a girl at a gas station. Her boyfriend threatened me. I asked him if he had AKC papers for her. He says "What?" I said American Kennel Club papers, if you don't have them she's not your (female dog.) Then I asked her why she let him violate her right to speak to people and treat her like a dog. This resulted in another threat upon my person. My response was "Swing or shut up." His girlfriend then slapped and berated him for disrespecting her while I laughed at him. Ghandi once stated that given the choice between violence and cowardice, he'd choose violence.
  18. How intense is your sparring? How closely does it simulate a real fight? If you only do light contact, ask your training partners if they would like to pick it up a notch. You don't want the first time you feel heavy pressure to be in a combative situation. A good sword is forged by putting it in a furnace and beating it with a hammer. Warriors are not forged in their comfort zone. Auto-pilot and mushin are very similar, they can be a good thing, so long as you keep your cool. Do you include any grappling? If not, crosstrain. If there is not good instruction available to you, maybe there is a highschool wrestler at your gym who would like a sparring partner. If your dojo has an open mat day, it would be a good opportunity to wrestle. Mas Oyama was a dan grade Judo player. The old masters crosstrained to fill in the gaps. Seems like a valuable tradition. Another thing I'd like to point out is that many martial artists have a romanticized idea of how a fight should look. Fights are nasty, violent things. Technique will not all be pretty and clean. It's chaos. The idea of randori is to add chaos, and a fight is even more so. All that being said, the point of a self defense art is to survive as unharmed as possible. The fact that you are on the internet discussing your feelings about this fight says that you were more successful than you give yourself credit for. Edit: just read your story. interesting.
  19. Pull guard and sweep?
  20. I really like White and Nerdy, but just recently found out what Ridin Dirty means. I usually like his songs better than the original, and anyone who can successfully incorporate NIN's Closer into a polka is just awesome. While on the subject of modified songs, I really like Richard Cheese.
  21. https://www.amazon.com/Nite-Lite-Rechargeable-Hunters-Favorite/dp/tags-on-product/B00474JQ3C If your going to use a light as a weapon, or as a light for that matter, you need a coon hunter's light. The light is on your head and the battery rests in a pouch on your belt. About 4 feet of heavy cord attaches to both. The light is bright, lasts all night, and it's hands free. The battery and cord would make quite a flail, or just use the battery as a handheld bludgeon, all while keeping the light in their eyes. The batteries in these things are hard and weigh 4 or 5 pounds.
  22. 6/22 Armbar/omoplata/triangle series light roll for 30 minutes run some kids through an ab circuit ranted for 15 minutes about refined sugar, natural sugar, simple carbs, complex carbs protiens and their breakdown into usable energy, timing meals and balance for matabolism the need for some fats in your diet.... The fact that I'm overweight is just sad. It's like the addiction counselor at the clinic taking a smoke break.
  23. Grappling with a gi helps you learn to have tighter control no gi.
  24. It's easier to de-escalate when your attacker is afraid of you. I would argue that you are scarier with a blade using cover than without. But you do need to be good enough at unarmed defense to get the chance.
