Simon and Garfunkel or Megadeth -
I do think that martial arts have improved my character, but my goal is to learn to defend myself and to have fun doing it. If my goal was to be a better person, I'd find some volunteer work to do. That's why I'm in a Jutsu and not a Do.

Did you get to roll with Kendrick any?

It's always nice to be able to put a face with a name. Makes people seem more "real" somehow, for lack of a better way of explaining my meaning. I like what you were saying about the tuite finish mentality. I like to explain it as locks set up strikes which set up locks which set up strikes. In a chess game the first thing you do is try to take control of the center of the board. Checkmate comes later.

Yeah, and you left your gear in my locker. You should probably come get it cause I can't fit my nunchucks in there. I love your humor MP. I'm voting for you in the "Funniest Member" category in the next KF Awards. I've never laughed so hard, because you make your point so exacting with your humor!! Thanks. I don't take myself too seriously and forget that sometimes others do. Our gym is all people like that. LiverPunch, who is a better striker than me, likes to do WWF taunts when we spar. I was grappling with one of our guys the other day and my belt came loose. So I hogtied him with it. Some people would get angry about such things. We just laugh about it, and that's the kind of people we want. While a martial art should be scientific, effective and pressure tested, it should also be fun to train.

What happens when you get a blackbelt?
MasterPain replied to RW's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
The certificate tells where your belt came from. I've never heard of a school not giving certificates for black belts. If not for the certificate signed by your instructor and usually the head of your organization, there is nothing that differentiates your belt from any other purchased from a catalog or online. -
Are you describing this: ?

Yeah, that was at Brian's.

If I wasn't allowed to punch people in the face, I'd get better at kicking them there too.

What in the name of Helio is a gift wrap?

Dustin and Louis have gone pro. Louis hurt himself rolling with me, Pulled a neck muscle bridging underneath me. Hope he heals quick, he fights in October. The guy that came from hit Squad was an old Jack McVicker student named zack. Didn't catch his last name.

got to roll with some pro fighters and a coach from the Hit Squad today. Yay.

Side Control Escapes for BJJ
MasterPain replied to kiaikid's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
You're a yellow belt. In a mixed art. That means you've done the bump, shrimp, and guard recovery about 100 times, maybe. Do it about 10,000 more times. Make your bump shrimp and guard recovery strong enough that should you encounter the Buddha in side control, your guard will be recovered, or something like that. -
Coddling anyone is disrespectful and counter productive. Go easy enough to not cause injury and hard enough to have realism. I was taught not to hit girls. That's why I never beat any of my girlfriends. Sparring is entirely different. In sparring you are learning to defend yourself against violence. To hit someone like a sissy hurts their skill development. So by being too easy and not providing a decent simulation of an assault, you are in a way responsible if she is ever hurt in an act of violence.

Do you have trees, a garage, strong rafters, a big yard? Are you into weapons training? How much money can you spare for equipment? Do you want technique or attribute training? What is you level of experience? Let us know a little more of what you have and what your looking for so we can help you better.

Defense against School Scuffles
MasterPain replied to ShotokanKid's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Exceptions apply for: a. fat people b. hairy people c. females d. any combination of the above -
I met a new student from one of our associated schools at our gathering last week, and I think she's a good example for beginners. She joined an MMA school, more or less for self defense training, exercise, and a hobby. She was the only new student in the get together. She has no interest in belts, her instructor doesn't give rank in their class. I showed her some grappling drills and she put in reps until someone showed her something else. Then she put in reps on that. The reward for doing so was to get better at what she was doing. A belt is a symbol. The alphabet is made up of symbols, which can be used to print the truth or a lie. A belt covers 2 inches of your butt, the rest is up to you.

That was fun. We should have a monthly movie night.

The relax part is very important. Most beginners are entirely too tense.
