  1. Alex hit me with a combo like this when I was a teenager. At least that's how I remember it.
  2. We just deal with Century usually, but when you want something specific like that, it could be hard to find.
  3. Even training full contact, injuries will be rare. I've only been hurt twice in 20 years. Much safer than most sports. I've had a few slugfests with LiverPunch that rank pretty high. I took a great beating with a padded escrima stick by a guy named Errol.
  4. The philosophy of an MMA school is that of it's instructor. The same can be said of traditional schools. I've seen traditional schools with arrogant students and mma students who are model citizens. It's more about the teacher and screening students than what the art is. It's not safe to assume that sending your kid to a traditional class will make them a better person. If your kid can be influenced, a jerk for a teacher will make them a jerk. I say IF they can be influenced because basic personality traits are pretty well ingrained by teen years. It's also hard to improve a teen's attitude. They have to want to improve or no amount of yes sir no sirs will make a difference. I have no problem with teaching teens to defend themselves and prepare to compete when they are old enough. I just don't want students who have a violent nature. If they go around picking fights, they're out of class. Also, a lot of high schools have a wrestling program.
  5. I found a good list of karate terms, with good organization. https://www.karate.org.nz/dojos/vuw/terminology It's copyrighted, or I'd copy it here. But I think it is a good resource for karateka, and even more so for those who come from other arts to understand some of what is being said in this forum. Maybe a mod could throw some glue on this?
  6. Over here in the middle of Nowhere, business is almost all word of mouth. I work for a seamless gutter company, and most of our customers got our number from a family member or neighbor who we had worked for previously. It's rare that they even looked in the phone book. I've never heard of anyone even looking for a gutter company on the internet. Most local dojos are filled with students who are friends before they started. I think it's part of the social dynamic of rural areas. I can tell you who lives in almost every house in my hometown, and I am an introvert.
  7. Great job, Brian. It's got to be hard posting good stuff as well as keeping people like me in line.
  8. Cool. It was the Smashlite, wasn't it? It's awesomeness is unequaled. Well, that and well articulated information.
  9. Crossing in front is no good. There are a few good ways to throw a side kick, and that is not one of them.
  10. Most accurate assessment ever. Not even joking.
  11. Your thinking of Chris Jericho, who is the man of 1,004 holds. I was waiting to see if you'd catch that.
  12. So, I worked security at an art festival tonight. Being surrounded by peace-loving hippies, painters and musicians, my maglite felt terribly inadequate. If I manage to get more of these jobs, the smashlite attachment would be a great investment. Any idea what they cost yet? Actually, Brian and I did have to break up a fight between a band guy and a roadie. Verbal de-escalation FTW. Other than that just a lot of "You can't bring your drinks in or out." Tallgeese, does standing behind someone who is talking to your buddy count as positional dominance? I think it does. Might be something to add to your thread.
  13. I would hate to get in a fight with dean Malinko, even if 800 of his 1000 holds is an armbar.
  14. I feel I have 3 homes. My house, my parents' house, and my dojo of 20 years.
  15. My niece was a competitive cheerleader, and she's tougher than me.
  16. Indifferent, women are just people. Once you've had a little experience, tell her you'd like a little nervousness and intimidation. It's good for you.
  17. I wish we had blue belt testers around here. At the few competitions I go to, a white belt is sandbagging, but my black belt is not in BJJ.
  18. Guard Pullers... Really though, what is a corkscrew?
  19. There is a difference between reckless stupidity and malicious intent. Intent is what makes the difference between involuntary manslaughter and murder. The former is still an accident, though one with one party seriously at fault. The latter is the intentional killing of another person. "Accident", to me, does not imply lack of fault, but lack of intent.
  20. Isn't it nice that your weapon hand is also the power side that you want to underhook with anyway? It never ends up being this way, but I always tell new guys that we will teach them a key lock after 6 months of position.
  21. To avoid having to make a deal with Maglite, you'll probably have to build your own flashlight.
  22. iSmashlite- has GPS and you can update your facebook status. Batsmashlite- the light sends the Bat Signal Icanhazsmashlite- covered in decals of adorable kittens with funny captions SmashTwilite- UV light with a silver ball SmashliteSaber- plays Duel of the Fates when you turn it on
  23. Reminds me of an ICP song.
  24. Welcome to the site. It's a friendly environment here. Good to hear you're feeling better about yourself. Are you doing any counseling as well?
