  1. Great choice of weapon with the warhammer, my choice of close combat weapon happens to be a cold steel kukri blade machete. Mine is a mace and shield.
  2. I'm going to take my food, animals, weapons and supplies over to my parents house. There is only a population of 250 here, and I don't think we'll have a lot of people passing through, so we should be able to hold out well. Dad's good with a rifle. If the zombies get inside, I'm pretty good with blunt weapons.
  3. Thank you for this. I am very interested in competing, but more so looking for progression to being a well-rounded fighter. I do find myself lacking skill when it comes to combat on the ground, so BJJ makes a lot of sense. I'll do a little more research on BJJ. Thanks. Is BJJ the best option to hone my grappling/ground skills? If so, what are other styles that come in a close second or third? BJJ is your best option for MMA. Wrestling is also good, but lacks the submissions that you find in BJJ, and therefore lacks the defense against those submissions. The advantage of wrestling as a discipline is it's focus on gaining dominate position, and the fast intense pace that fit well with the MMA ruleset. The big thing that I think on this subject is that if you want to compete in MMA, get into a MMA gym.
  4. Happy birthday.
  5. I would try to spread the word numpty around here, but I'm far too busy trying to re-establish the phrase Jive Turkey.
  6. I am Necroing a zombie thread. That's just cool. 28 Days zombies were not zombies per se, but many of the rules apply. The speed and mobility are definitely scarier, it is offset by still being subject to human rules of dying. Center mass is good enough when stopping the heart is good enough. The worst thing about them is the germs. I'm a bit neurotic about hygiene anyway. Oh, Brian, if the zombies said "brains" it would be Return of the Living Dead. That series was not done by Romaro, but was a simultaneous parody and tribute. Romaro's films are horror and social commentary, often using a zombies as a metaphor for materialistic greed and such. The Return of the Living Dead capitalized on Romaro's success, but were just fun comedy horror flicks.
  7. I've never heard of a Muay Thai kata. I think it should be noted that any student of Bruce Lee's that was an adult at the time of his death would be at least 60 years old now. Provided 10 years of training to produce an instructor, which is a longer time than many arts require, an instructor could be 5 generations removed in direct lineage. Given 5 years, it would be 10 generations, possibly with forgotten lineage.
  8. I'm going to hand out candy dressed as Professor Chaos.
  9. SCHWEET!!!, BEST ZOMBIE DRAMA EVA!!! - Phil Baroni Is that a real quote, or just a believable impression?
  10. Awesome, I wasn't aware of the marathon.
  11. Season 2 starts on October 16.
  12. This stuff is good advice. Also, spend a few minutes a couple times a day doing a hamstring stretch. Sit with your back against a wall, straighten your legs in front of you and flex your foot back toward you. this helps you keep flexibility in your foot tendons, which should help some with the pain. Freeze a 20 ounce water bottle, you'll have to have it about half full, or it'll bust. Roll your foot over it while your at the computer or watching tv. A lady at the gym had the same problem, and one of the owner's is a physical therapist. This was what she said to do.
  13. When the site went down and I got the screen saying the account was suspended, I thought I had overly offended someone and got smacked upside the head with ForuMjlonir- Mighty Banhammer of Patrick. I get back on and I'm member of the month.
  14. Go to SeventhSanctum.com if you haven't already. also, research Paradise Lost by John Milton. All sorts of demons in there, all public domain.
  15. They love me, they really love me! I'd like to thank the Academy, the Bujin Clan, Akuma, M. This acceptance speech was brought to by the letter Z and the number 1.
  16. We were influenced by MMA back when they called it Vale Tudo.
  17. Brock Rubsam, He's about half our's and half Brian's. He's with us once or twice a week.
  18. In a couple days I'm getting Purifying Zen: A Translation of Watsuji Tetsurō’s Shamon Dōgen translated and with notes by Professor Steve Bein. While not exactly martial, zen is useful and the concepts tie in well with martial arts. Steve is a fellow Bujin black belt, he's studied many other martial arts, and teaches philosophy, Samurai history, writes good science fiction, climbs mountains and is just all around pretty cool. I'll give a review shortly after I get it. Edit: Not much martially applicable, but many who practice Japanese martial arts are interested in Japanese culture, history and spiritual practice. If that describes you, this book is great. If you are unfamiliar with basic concepts of Buddhism, it can be confusing. That said, I'll give you an overview. Watsuji is a philosopher from early 20th century Japan. He studied western philosophy, tried writing his thesis on Nietzsche, and was told to write on a real philosopher. (To me that says he was ahead of his time, but I'm a Nietzsche fan.) He later became a professor. Anyway, before his death, his dad- an old school type- admonished him for not studying Japanese thinkers and giving his countrymen something to be proud of from their own culture. So he dug up nearly forgotten texts on the founder of Soto Zen- Dogen. The main body of the book is Steve's translation of Watsuji's book about Dogen. Steve was helped by Watsuji's closest student who, sadly, passed away a few years ago. Watsuji's telling of Dogen's story has something to offer everyone, zen practitioner or not. Dogen was a monk in the 1200s that felt the temple had become corrupt, traveled to China to find the true way, came back and taught his way until his death. Dogen died as he wished to, practicing seated meditation, surrounded by good monks.
