He gave up money, got out of the car, and was following orders before attacking. Sounds to me like he was trying to comply, but for some reason acted out of fear. Maybe he was told to do something that he could not give in to. He must have felt it was a necessary course of action. I wonder if he actually used the phrase "ultimate fighting champion." I know guys with belts, and I've never heard that phrase used.

Did focus mitts, unarmed vs knife drills, knife vs knife sparring, clinch focused sparring. Decided to do some lifting which was cut short by debilitatingly awful music.

Debrief: (ADN News) Father subdues home invader

Sorry about the thread derail, everyone. Back on topic. These were all good points. A locked door won't keep a serious person out, but it does buy time. I'd guess about 10 seconds. Just long enough to arm yourself, IF you have the mentality to do so. -
Cost of Martial Arts Instruction in U.S. vs. U.K.
MasterPain replied to Dobbersky's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Patrick, I think that comparing teh price after converting it is kind of unfair. A better comparison would be the price in pounds per lesson compared to the average income in the UK versus US class pricing compared to US average income. Please allow me to digress from martial arts to explain my thought: I studied in London twice in college and saw similiar logic being applied by cohorts regarding exchange rate. It is unfair to think about the pound to dollar conversion if your income is in pounds. My fellow students would always claim that England was very expenseive because a bottle of water cost $2 (1 pound- with a 2:1 exchange in 2004) at a conviences store in the UK versus $1 at home in North Carolina. I would always bring up the point that if you make $100 in the US and buy a $1 water it is the exact same price if you were buying making $100 pounds and buying a 1 pound water. If Dobersky (assuming his income is in pounds that have been exchanged at a 1:1.56 rate) comes to the US to visit and pays $5 US for my class he is actually paying 3 pounds 20. Clearly, that would be cheaper for him than a US based student. I think much of this is very regional. Where I live, the cost of living is very low, but so is income. A dollar is worth much more here than it is 100 miles away. It probably averages out well. -

While we don't worry much about kata, the core of our art is in the 2 person drills. But anyone who quotes Stan Lee and references Back to the Future in a martial arts blog is our kind of people. I also like the shark bait idea. It's great training and a ton of fun. -

Good stuff. He has a fondness for that heel hook, doesn't he? I like that the clip shows him pulling stuff from a flow and also tight controlling positions. -
Cost of Martial Arts Instruction in U.S. vs. U.K.

You wouldn't believe the amount of people that complained when they raised the price of a monthly membership from $20 to $30. This being at the same gym that tallgeese referred to, cost of living here is very low and we sometimes forget what other people have to pay for what we take for granted. Let me note that that $30 also gets you into aerobics, yoga, 24 hour access to weights, treadmills, exercise bikes and such. And we tend to have class 4 nights a week. -
Student knocking out a bully?

For the sake of pleasing the kid's parents you have to give the standard "tell your teachers" speech. But there is honne and there is tatemae. -
12/3 Went to the friendly neighborhood mma school. no-gi judo drills. Aiki-Romaned a random Canadian trucker. Worked bottom game JiuJitsu with one of the fighters.

I come from a long line of Kempo hybrids. It blends well into clinch and grappling. Concerning Master Ken, my killface is comical, but I have been guilty of re-stomping the groin.
-
I realize this varies from school to school, but Kempo tends to be high on the violence scale. Lots of head stomping and such.

Aikido is derived from Aikijujutsu, an art designed to break someones limbs and take their sword away so you can kill them with it. Non violent? Also anything that takes decades to become useful has a terrible training system. A decent teacher can make a system useful in a few months, and of course more useful over time. If you want art for the sake of art that's fine. But self defense is about using the appropriate amount of force (i.e. VIOLENCE) to deal with violence. I've seen a video of a one armed Aikidoka in a full contact MMA rules fight, and the guy held his own despite his handicap. He didn't do it by using half-hearted atemi-waza. The man hit and threw like he meant it. That is for competition. If he wasn't actively fighting, he would have gotten his butt kicked. Which in self defense means killed. The only REAL nonviolent form of self defense is running away, which is fine if you're young, tall and thin. Aikido has good stuff in it, if it's trained with a progression from technique to live training AND while defending against realistic attacks. This is rarely the case, as the idea of nonviolence has pervaded the art. If nothing else the ukemi is good for you.

This works for me. If you don't feel there is a real danger, I'd still let him know how you feel. And that the slightest misstep will result in being thrown out the door, which may or may not be opened when said throwing occurs.
-
Exactly. It's not just for beginners either. I go slow motion on occasion just to check my form.

Student knocking out a bully?
MasterPain replied to Wastelander's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I give the "reasonable person, in your situation knowing what you know" speech. If that doesn't sound familiar, it's from state law concerning self defense and use of force. To simplify matters, did you use the least amount of force necessary to stay safe and control the situation? Did you exhaust all other means of conflict resolution before resorting to physical force? Do you carry yourself in such a manner as to not appear to be an easy target for bullying? If the answer to all those is yes, then congratulations on successfully defending yourself. -
What type of drills? Focus mitts? One step sparring? What style?

Can this be done in modern America?

Pacifists who farm do not need to hunt, they have a farm. Shane could have shot the girl, but was smart enough to let one of the allegedly softer people do it to make the point that it had to be done, not only because it made sense, but because it was right and proper.
-
Nice. Thanks for that. Also, is that your basement? I'm jealous.
-
Am I the only one bothered by the myopic view that it's Hershel's farm or wilderness or a city? Rural areas have farms everywhere. Surely they could find another farmhouse within a a day.

I was disappointed in Dale, who is usually very reasonable, hiding the guns. Nobody has the right to take away a group's ability to defend themselves. I don't like Shane, but he was the only voice of reason in this episode. I actually guessed the ending when Shane was yelling at Rick.
