Is "how much force to use" the wrong question?
MasterPain replied to Liver Punch's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
For that matter, what is a cop? He is a citizen who has taken it upon himself, as a job, to serve and protect the safety of his fellow citizens. This is a respectable job, but should any other person with the means to protect his neighbors refuse to do so because it is not their job? If it is in my power to restrain a dangerous individual until the authorities show up, isn't it my duty as a citizen to do so? -

Is it? Do you have a badge? Why is it your responsibility to hurl yourself toward danger that is directed somewhat ineptly at you when there's a door ten feet away?Seriously. Why is it your responsibility to attack a knife wielding threat who has already stated that their only target is you? Why can't you let the people with badges take care of this one? It just seems like fighting adds more chances for things to go wrong, with very little payoff, in a fair number of situations. This is the point that I think is important here. Just because we CAN bust out an action movie on an obvious threat doesn't make it spontaneously become a good idea by force of will if it wasn't already a good course of action. I don't have that much faith in my doors. Or local police. -

Weapon deployment requires space. It would be best to push her off and retreat through the door as she gets up. Lock the door and call 911. If she breaks through the door, you'd better be prepared to shoot if she won't respond to verbal commands. -
Zombie cows...... I'm not getting to sleep tonight.

They're plotting revenge.

I just realized that if I'd lose about 20 pounds, I'd be built like Oyama. Sadly, I have a strange fear of cows.

I think Kuma was describing the same concept.

Learn in short increments. Most kata include a few changes in direction. Do 1 section at a time. Practice the movements until the first time you turn around several time, until it's easy. Then practice up to the second change of direction. Do this until you can go through the whole kata.

If you don't see the point in kata, why are you doing a traditional form of karate? And if you choose to take a traditional karate class, why not apply yourself to the whole art? It's hard to be good at something you don't care about. If you really don't care about kata, you should find a kickboxing class or something. Or you could just be glad that you don't have to pretend to be a bird or shoot arrows.

YAY ME! Thanks, that's pretty cool. Congrats to everyone else too. -
That's beyond McDojo. That's teaching your kid to be a pompous arrogant jerk who dismisses the value of things they don't understand and can't be bothered to learn about. Teaching kids to be sycophants is a far cry from building character.

Aren't they in Georgia?

A certain Jim disagrees with you. That's because they don't work. It relies on pain and won't put a real fighter down, it'll just make them mad. How these wimps got on the UFC, we'll never know. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3-RfOTlaQw

You should have included a poll about whether or not we clicked to see the image. I did. Morbid curiosity is an awful thing. -

So, we discussed this thread wit Sensei Jones, and he said it's a matter of semantics, and of course no more force should be used than is absolutely needed. 10 minutes later, he has a knee in GS's face, a knee in his ribs, his arm immobilized and in a wristlock, mae tekubi, and a rubber knife in his free hand. So after the 3rd rubber knife stab to the armpit of a person in a fetal position with an arm that could be destroyed on a whim, he suddenly stops, looks at the training knife with a look of surprise, grins sheepishly and explained that it's all his teachers' fault. -

Using enough force to escape doesn't make you a coward. Using more force than is necessary to escape makes you a criminal. -

Also notice he said wrist throws. In Aikido and Aikijujutsu, they are practiced in a manner that looks like a throw. This is because the uke has trained in ukemi and knows where to throw himself in order to release the hold. The tori doesn't go full force either. What results appears to be a throw, but is actually just a way of simulating a break, while putting the least stress on the uke's joint as possible while still using realistic movements. Also there is the idea of catching a wrist from the extended part of a punch and locking it. Good luck on that. More realistically locks occur after entering a clinch range, striking, disrupting balance and controlling the rest of the limb. It also helps to strike in such a manner as to make them look away from the limb being attacked.
