Wanting to fight
MasterPain replied to datguy's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
A real fight never occurred to me in this post. Violence is dumb and dangerous and should be avoided. -
Where's the thumbs up button? That's why I put up a video of Sakuraba defending from the waist-hold position. Nobody will grab you over your arms, even if they did, what are they going to do from there? It's just not much of an attack.

Is this a women's self defense course? Those usuall don't last long enough to develop much real skill. Even if they did, the thing that sucks so much about being smaller and weaker than your attacker is that you are smaller and weaker. This makes defending yourself an terrible experience. That should be one of the main things you take away from the class. Be aware of what's going on around you. Try not to be alone in places where you are vulnerable. If you do have to defend yourself, attack viciously until they let go of you then run somewhere where there are people. The idea is not to win a fight, but to escape as unharmed as possible.

So, bring a gi?

I put up hay and walked a few miles. Do not drink memory of technique into oblivion. Cause I want to train BJJ bad, like so bad.

The most important part is to bring your hips down and forward. What did the instructor say to do? If nothing else you learned that having a big strong man on your back is an unpleasant experience. So don't let them get there.

Wanting to fight
MasterPain replied to datguy's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Every animal species has an inborn drive to compete for dominance. Within a given species these fights are usually not death matches, but ritualized things with unspoken rules. (Death matches and written established rules are a human thing with our so-called superiority.) There is nothing morally wrong with having a drive to fight. Sure it's part of the harsher aspects of human nature, but I would refer you to the words of Carl Jung "The Shadow aspect is much deeper and darker when not recognized in conscious thought" Well, that was a paraphrase but conveys the proper meaning. Although many of the physical effects of a sport fight are similar to a fight, it's more sport than fight. It does take courage, something that truly violent people tend to lack. Few bullies and wife beaters want to fight a trained person in a fair contest. Philosophical junk aside, ask an experienced fighter to go a few hard rounds with you in the gym first. You don't want the first time you experience a good fighter trying to beat the ever-loving crap out of you to be in front of 1,000 people. -

They are not easy, fun but not easy. You'll laugh but I'm serious....TENNIS RACKET. Why? Because it's feasible that you would have to defend yourself with one nearby. That's why I practice with screwdrivers and hammers. The thing is you'll most likely learn with an escrima type stick. Just practice with the racket at home.

Yeah, static stretchs should be done as a cooldown. That's the best time to gain flexibility and you don't risk overstretching before a workout that way.

While I am glad that he will not be in a position to cause more harm, I cannot find that thought pleasant in any way. Does this sort of thing rehabilitate? No. Does it prevent? Apparently not. The only thing it does is to spread misery. There is plenty of misery in the world already. I really would prefer if they found a way to have such people be a safe and productive member of society who just happens to be in a situation where they cannot or will not be able to harm anyone again. That may be the better way of looking at things, and you're probably right. I just don't feel that way. As much as I'd like to think otherwise, I'm not perfect.

Sparring with gear and without
MasterPain replied to Soheir's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Separated carpals and metacarpals, scarred zygomatic arches, crushed twigs and berries.... There is a reason for sparring gear. I only spar no gear with experienced practitioners and light contact. I plan on training for a long time and repeated stress injuries are not something I want to deal with. -
The post above me said that people found guilty of this are persecuted by other prisoners. What could be seen as persecution could also be seen as justice. Maybe the State can not provide cruel and unusual punishment, but maybe the guy doing time for tax evasion can. I don't waste my empathy on people who harm children.

most of that just 1 round though 6/1 stadium steps several rounds of sparring landed my first decent superman punch. Set it up with about 30 seconds TKDish kickery, faked front kick and threw it. In the words of London Tipton "Yay me!"
-
Persecution or unsanctioned justice? Semantics.

A child, possibly female, alone on the road at night..... Sounds like a target. Being abducted while walking to a self defense class would be the worst irony ever. For adults, I agree. Walk if it's close enough. Even then I'd suggest pepper spray and a wariness toward people.

Look into the closer one. Have you thought about doing this instead of tennis?

How old was the kid? This kind of thing is awful.

Why do you have to belong to a style
MasterPain replied to Dobbersky's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Solid post! I can think of several moves and concepts I've learned over the years and initially thought were useless/don't work for me. Yet, as my skill increased (and of those around me as well) I ended up using the very things I had thought were unnecessary. Had I just thrown them away, I may never have been able to step up to the next level each time. When I see the "throw away" line from Bruce Lee, it usually makes me think of forms. Although Lee was familiar with forms early on in his training, it is well documented how he felt about forms in the latter part of his training, along with the "aliveness" aspect he wanted so much out of training. Along with that, we see how certain styles are always bound to the curriculum they teach, be it forms, one-steps, a certain way to spar, etc. I think these are mainly the things Lee didn't like, and are likely the root of his "throw away" quote. I think you just opened a can-o-worms. Might as well start fishing. -
What jerks!! Umm..... Wait... I'm not sure how I feel about this. Seriously I should clarify that we do not just bully people. We will however, back you into the corner and make you fight out of it, push your endurance until you vomit and such.

I have a major problem with this concept. I will grant that Bruce Lee was a fantastic martial artist and the overall concept of JKD--that you should always be advancing your art and learning and building on what you know--is a good one, but this line is always thrown about in discussions about JKD. I hated it the moment I saw it quoted with Bruce Lee's name next to it and I've hated it every time someone has mentioned it since then. I don't want to derail the thread too much, but I will say that just because something doesn't work for you now doesn't mean you should "throw it away", and just because something does work for you now doesn't mean it will always work for you. I feel that the very statement of "throw away what doesn't work" is counter productive to the entire ideal of always working to advance your art and building on what you know. The idea isn't to instantly discard what doesn't work right now. If something has been shown to work for someone else, it's probably valuable. It took me a long time to make x guard useful, now I love it. I will NOT, however try for years to make chainpunching stop a double leg. -

Burton Richardson, a great modern JKD guy said that any JKD students who aren't doing some BJJ have missed the point entirely. Yet many are trying to do exactly what Bruce was doing in 1970. Ugg. -
