  1. Too small of a data pool for a conclusion to be drawn. Also, how many deaths were by accident or genetically inheirited disease?
  2. The formalities of Karate I believe are wonderful for maintaining order and structure in a kid's class. We just don't have time to run one anymore. There are TKD gyms in the area that will take them anyway. I still bow off the floor and when passing training weapons. That gets you looked at funny at MMA gyms. Put me in a traditional setting and I feel like one of the unwashed masses. Also, while I think martial arts have done a great deal to strengthen my character, that has been a natural effect of hard work. How does one add much of a philosophy when your class consists of people of various religious, social and political values? Seems like a good way to alienate one another. We just refuse to teach violent people.
  3. A girl who used to train with us got off work and was walking to her car. There were 4 guys standing next to her car. This is at a factory and she knew they didn't work there. So she went back inside and found a big guy that she knew and asked him to walk her to her car. When the people saw him with her, they got in their truck and left. Self defense at it's finest.
  4. Some of the most disciplined martial artists in the world are MMA fighters. We're geared towards self defense, but we are never more disciplined than when someone is preparing for a fight.
  5. The trouble with foreign language is that you take the first syllable from one word and the last syllable of another word an get something unintended. I think as long as it's 2 separate words or the K is capitalized it's okay. Also, Gokkon means party. But unfitting names? Aikido- Way of Harmonizing Energy- Dislocating joints while standing, wearing cool pants and being a pacifist somehow Aikijujutsu- Gentle Art of Harmonizing Energy- same thing but smaller movements and not being a pacifist Judo- Gentle Way- Hitting people with the Earth itself while wearing spiffy Japanese pajamas BJJ- Brazilian Gentle Art- dislocating joints and choking people while on the ground. May be done with or without spiffy Japanese pajamas Somehow those are all GENTLE. I call shenanigans
  6. If you want to learn combat, make sure the school spars and grapples. Theory is wonderful, but without application it's just theory i.e. junk. Being fat and out of shape will make things challenging. Just do what you can, push yourself and eventually it'll get easier. Social anxiety is a real pain. Find a small school with friendly people. If it's real bad, speak with a doctor.
  7. 17?! That's barely out of diapers. You usually don't need to fight for rank, other than regular sparring.Might as well fight once you're prepared to. It'll give your belts more street cred.
  8. Have I mentioned lately that you Karate people are crazy? That looks like torture. My shins, however....
  9. I took the guard passes from a Saulo Ribeiro video here Great stuff and cool accent.
  10. Watch Paul. Starring Shaun and Ed from Shaun of the Dead. It was great.
  11. Was that that much of a problem in the area your dojo is in? I thought that this was something from yesteryear's, and in that, it's rare, if at all. We take people's signs all the time. Like Ninja Vikings.I'm scratching my head on this quite hard because I don't get it. Could you please extrapolate for me? Challenge a dojo, defeat their master and take their sign. They do it on anime, anyway. Vikings raided and plundered for a living. Therefore by challenging dojos and taking their signs you become a ninja Viking. Or something.
  12. I think the OP is talking about hard vs soft styles. In which case I quote Roy D Mercer "How bigga boy are ya?" If your a big, strong guy that doesn't move really fast, go with a hard, linear style. If your small and quick, a soft, circular style may be for you. I like a blend of the two. As a general rule Kung Fu will be more soft and circular, but there are soft styles of Karate and probably hard styles of Kung Fu as well.
  13. 5/10 shoulders, abs knife disarms 15 minutes straight MMA
  14. He got Dim Mak'd by a drug allergy.
  15. I wouldn't have wanted my parents at my tests. I have fond memories of beatfests, but my Mommy wouldn't have liked to see them.
  16. Also, define success. 22 is young enough to do almost anything, but what do you consider success?
  17. I know more of Tao, as related by Bruce Lee, who ripped out Chuck's chest hair.
  18. The question to ask is when did Karate become Karate? Are we talking Chinese hand or Empty Hand? If it's Chinese Hand do we go back to Bodhidharma? If so to we take that lineage back to India? Take it back far enough it was most likely created by Vishnu or Shiva. Much like Pankration(granddaddy of them all) was created by Theseus to defeat the Minotaur. Empty hand was started by Gichin Funokoshi when he changed the Kanji to mean empty from Chinese. Homophones and such. His school was Shotokan. So in order to avoid Destroyers of Worlds and Sons of Poseidon, who I will not discredit, I vote Shotokan.
  19. Keep in mind, my vastly uneducated opinion is vastly uneducated.
  20. Was that that much of a problem in the area your dojo is in? I thought that this was something from yesteryear's, and in that, it's rare, if at all. We take people's signs all the time. Like Ninja Vikings.
  21. We had a guy start at 55. At 60 he was beating on the college kids. He's 77 now and can probably do more situps than you. I want to be like George when I grow up.
  22. japanese Zen, I'm sure is full of semantics. And when translated to English loses a lot of meanings. I think it all boils down to letting go of desire and expectation, and living Now.
  23. There are equestrians and then there are horseback riders. My family has the latter. Dad says his horses don't have power steering. 5/9 taught the young guys to take a hit did some guillotine defense and submission series 5 rounds free roll 5 rounds sparring
  24. JCVD.... Really though they are very mobile, proportionally strong and accustomed to hard work. All good attributes for a fighter. I've heard of football(American football) players crosstraining ballet.
  25. I think Sirc trains with Omega, who is a pretty good striker. I didn't realize Kintanon was a Kyukushin BB. Also, I'm over here at LiverPunch's old town. Our whole county has a population of about 10,000 and about that many hogs and cows. We've been lucky enough to have good instruction, and I consider us to be good general martial artists. But if we want quality specialized instruction in one area, it involves some travel. Then we bring back a few drills and make them our own. Our friend at the MMA gym travels all over and breathes martial arts.
