Advice regarding potentially teaching needed
MasterPain replied to CallMeLuke's topic in Instructors and School Owners
If you want to have a fun time, train FMA for a while then go to the park dressed as a wizard and pwn them all like noobs. You may even find someone else of a like mentality. Then you can show everyone how real orcs fight. But here lies the problem. you are making assumptions of CallMeLuke's ability. We should give him either benefit of the doubt, or ask specifically what his training has consisted of since quitting Shotokan. For all we know, he's had a great wrestling and kickboxing coach, and is basically a mixed martial artist that kept the karate flavor. -
Avoiding Telegraphing Punches

In all seriousness, why are they wearing DOC clothes? Addressing the content otherwise, that's a nice quick punch, but not real strong. I borrow a concept from Eskrima-hide your hands in movement. It's harder to see something move toward you that is already in motion than it is to see something that is still start moving toward you. I hope that made sense. -

Advice regarding potentially teaching needed

Yeah, what he said. I definitely would want a black belt from somewhere if I was going to rank students, other than that, teach what you know. A person's knowledge speaks for it's self, and it won't take long for you to gain a reputation for better or worse. I've learned useful stuff from people who hold no rank. And I've seen black belts that one of our better white belt students could walk all over. -
What?!? Why didn't you ever take me there? You guys have all the fun... I just found out about it. He's an old friend.

I like the traditional 52 Blocks gi. Belts aren't allowed so at Shodan level someone braids your hair. -

But, Stan, you didn't tell us there was a chance we might get served! -
This, and you forgot the sparring. And I got to knife fight with a fencer.

To learn to defend, you need a competent attacker.
-
You got a problem with that? Strike first, strike hard, no mercy sir! John Kreese is a great life coach.

I just called it a scissor kick, and it was indeed awesome. there were some good side kicks to the thigh in there as well. It's nice to see a Karate guy to trains to fight, and then beats people with Karate.

Just experience each moment in it's thusness.

Really? Strange. I think this is the problem with many people's mentalities. Self defense should be do prevent someone from hurting you. This does not, by necessity, mean that you will have to hurt them. This is the way it was explained to me: "Don't fight! If you must fight, you have to be willing to knock down the opponent, and while he is lying at the edge of consciousness, break his face, arms, and legs to put the fear of God into him. Without this kind of fear, he may be an angry enemy for life. You will always have to watch your back as he may take revenge for his humiliation. If you can't do this, don't fight. Better to give the appearance of a coward, then to look over your shoulder forever." As for bullies, if you know your stuff, you will walk "the walk", and they will avoid you. I disagree. While they are barely conscious, you call the police, press charges and put the fear of the judicial system in them.

What is the breaking point?

This is not arrogance. Martial arts for some is a hobby. 18 years in it's more than that or you wouldn't be asking this. My art has a grand total of 10 black belts, all with their own flavor of what that art is. So to me, you described the natural progression of a martial artist. I am a few inches shorter, a lot heavier, stronger and slower than my teacher. If I used his style of fighting, it wouldn't be as effective as mine. He would not do well with my style either. But he taught me to fight like me. The traditional guys will chew on me for saying this, but martial arts were born with Ug figuring out that hit Oog with rock more effective than hit Oog with fist. Later your teachers taught you Ug's rock technique, and you learned Oog's deflect rock and kote gaeshi followed by Oog's side mount and keylock. Now that you know Ug and Oog's tricks, you are the Alpha Caveman. You can still teach your base art as it's self and rank student's in it. Anything extra is gravy. I wouldn't give belts in any other system without being ranked in it first. I know a good deal of BJJ, but would never award a belt in it. If what you teach has changed enough that your base system is not really represented, give it a new name. I hope your teachers will be helpful to you on your ventures. If not, just do what it is that you do. There is nothing wrong with trying to be more complete. -
celebrated by beating people with sticks and my fists.

My hand hurts.

We tend to start on the 1st or 2nd day. Pretty much"Here's a jab, a hook, a cross, here's a couple covers. Now use them." Then I get to immediately start correcting things. The only thing is be careful not to hit a beginner too hard. It can cause learned helplessness and reinforce avoidance behavior. Or as us rednecks say "make em gunshy."

I can't sleep. I've had this problem for most of my life, and dislike the use of drugs for it. Too much potential for long term liver damage. That's why I'm posting at this time. Anyway, at least now I have something to do.

In a small school, if everyone just does their own thing, you will not be exposed to enough fighting personalities. If you spar with counterfighters all the time, you will be ill-equipped to deal with someone attacking with reckless abandon. same thing with really unorthodox stuff. It can be hard to deal with. Plus it's just fun to do.
