Increase of knife attacks locally, which defense tool?
MasterPain replied to rhilllakefield's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I will agree that not fighting is best when it's an option. But some keys on a string are best for amusing babies. A telephone pole was mentioned, use it to gain opportunity to draw a knife, since a gun is not an option. -
I don't know what you guys are talking about, but the guy beside me just pulled a black veil over his face and left.

I'll skip over the implications of prefacing your opinion with a denial of being a sociopath. I absolutely love the First Amendment. It gives me the right to peacefully be a jerk in word and print, to gather with other jerks, and to worship the Flying Spaghetti Monster. It also gives people the right to peacefully disagree, even if the words toward Pastafarians get nasty. Our government is far from perfect, but the 1st Amendment is one of the most perfect concepts ever created by mankind. I have a legal right to say what I feel. However, I will sometimes stay silent in the name of avoiding conflict. On a case-by-case basis, it can be sensible to ask yourself if it is worth risking violence. Usually the answer is no. But when this becomes a trend, day by day, you are giving up what heroes have died for. There are times when I will let things slide. If I am unlikely to see someone again, they can say what they want and I'll ignore it. But, I live in a town with a population of 200 or so, I can not allow anyone around here to walk on me. I would risk violence to avoid anyone thinking they can push me around here, because I have to walk my dog past their house every day. I will not do so hanging my head. I also like the Castle Doctrine. Read up on it. I know the Illinois self defense laws pretty well, and feel that all martial artists should have a good understanding of local law. If a redneck with a GED can learn it, so can you. Adherence to self defense law can have a bigger effect on an individual than their personal martial philosophy, so they should be studied. I also believe that anyone who claims to be a pacifist should be wedgied daily, by a smaller and weaker person. It'll keep you honest. Japanese pacifists in WWII shot over the enemies heads. Now THAT is hardcore.

I'm a shy and private person, but that does not apply to martial arts. I'll talk and demonstrate to anyone with an interest.

Did you know the leader of the crazy 88 was Gordon Liu?

6/13 Worked late, stretched then grappled a couple rounds

1 mile run Punch Out style. Had the girlfriend on the bike and I jogged behind her singing Gina stole, Gina stole, stole my bike, bike, bike.

I thought the kick came from bringing his knee up, then using his hips and quadriceps to thrust his foot up and forward.

Where to start?
MasterPain replied to Isshin-Vegg's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Both arts have throws and groundwork, but the emphasis is reversed. Judo emphasizes the throws, but has some ground fighting. BJJ has takedowns, but emphasizes the ground fight. Either art will do a lot to round out your skill set. -
Ode to the Gi
MasterPain replied to MasterPain's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
That's the popular theory. We just have to stay focused on it for a while and it should come together. -

That movie was heavily edited and portrayed me in a negative light. I am nice man with happy feelings all of the time. -

Let me know how it goes over. But keep in mind that no one ever taught me about iambic pentameter. -
Halfway good, I feel with no gi Sweaty and slick and moving quite free Around the guard do I pass And settle my mass I take a rest And lay on your chest Don't be alarmed Just gimme that arm A little twisty turny Ahh, the way things should be But now, Brazilian Pajamas It's 95 degrees outside- you've gone bananas Oh well, how bad can it be I'll just go around that knee.... Wait, a grip is on my sleeve What a tangled web we weave After all, it is a spider guard Moving around is hard Then at last I start to pass But I'm wearing a belt On which a pull is felt Now on my back Pinned with my jacket Upon my limbs there is an assault Help, help, I need an adult Brazilian pajamas, I do not adore But I shall don them heretofore Much shall I learn Then people shall I overturn I will learn to like them Sam I Am But until that time In case of a crime Against which I must defend Though it may offend I'll strip to a Speedo And fight like a pro

That's the best karate testimonial I have ever heard.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mushin Read that. It explains the empty mind concept a bit more simply than Bruce Lee did. Study the philosophy, and make up your own mind. It's fun to have the ideas of others, but there is no absolute truth in martial philosophy. Aikido tends to be heavy on philosophy. A good Aikidoka could probably teach me a good deal about wristlocks, but I will never be a pacifist. They say there are no attacks in Aikido... I would rather crush my enemies, see them driven before me, and hear the lamentations of their women when I press charges for assault. Most martial arts philosophy is Eastern. For a Western view, try Plato. Not martial you say? Plato wasn't his real name. Plato was his wrestling nickname. I like Musashi and Machiavelli.

As long as no one acts stupid and tries to hurt each other.

I'm not much of a kata practitioner, but I think situations like this are exactly what kata was meant for. Some kids around here got a couple sets of boxing gloves and sparred at the park and in back yards. It's not a replacement for a good coach, but it's better than sitting in the beanbag chair eating cheetos.

me too.

Wng chun Sparring
MasterPain replied to iggyrip's topic in Kung Fu, JKD, Wing Chun, Tai Chi, and Chinese Martial Arts
Once again, it depends on the teacher. Some Karate schools are very sparring intensive, some are non-contact. -
