Haha, actually apart from #1, I was serious, and then only because there are no Anime conventions anywhere near me. Vantheman, I will change to Muay Thai shorts if we start attracting point fighters and bo-twirlers.

Hitting with the heel is likely more of a stomping front kick than a snapping kick. Make sure you are getting enough pivot on the supporting leg to open your hips enough to get the required height of your knee in the chamber of the kick.

I understand you here, but neither one of these guys is likely a grappler. Its just a natural human reaction when you are getting pummelled to close and clinch, to take away those weapons pummelling you. Even non-grapplers will end up doing this.I agree with you completely, which is why I think everyone should practice grappling in the first place. This is almost always what these cross-style matches end up as, sloppy grappling. Despite the efforts of some good coaches, I have been Sloppy Grappling for a long time.

For competitive fighters, it's a matter of knowing when to quit. For those who train for self defense and hobby purposes, the level of contact should be kept below what causes concussion. For that matter, a fighter should never be concussed while training. Non contact or excessively light contact will teach bad habits, and regularly fighting at over about 60% power can cause lasting damage. It's important to find a balance if you are going to last long. I've done 20 years of reasonably hard contact, and I am no dumber than I was before. I've even learned not to pick my nose in public during that time.

The Practicality of Typical Martial Arts Weapons
MasterPain replied to KarateEd's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
This is very true, however, many people have a mental/moral block when it comes to being willing to actually cut someone. Those people would do well not to bring such a weapon into play, as their hesitancy could result in their own weapon being used against them. -
The punch: Natural or developed?

I think you're mostly right. -
Congrats on not making him bite the curb.

Reason #10... The traditional black kenpo gi is very slimming. #9... Keeps muscles from going cold during less active time periods. #8.. When training alone at night, non-martial artists coming in to do cardio will be less disturbed by the guy swinging a machete around in the next room. #7.... Traditional street cred. #6... Less dripping sweat on the mats. #5.. MMA or Kempo gloves (you know what Master Ken would say) make deploying a training knife from a pocket too much of an ordeal, but drawing from an obi requires the same amount of time and roughly the same movement as the blades I typically carry, allowing for more realistic situational drilling. #4... No more digging in the laundry searching for gym clothes. (I'm a lazy housekeeper.) #3... Putting a gi on is psychologically like the guy in Over the Top turning his hat around. #2 Never having to verbally say "No, we do not train UFC." again. and the #1 reason for training in a gi... When it gets old and frays I can go to Cons as Akuma.

The Martial Arts Is Dead!?!
MasterPain replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I can just imagine Nietzsche's madman yelling in the streets that Karate is dead and that we are it's murderers. What are these dojos if not the tombs and sepulchers of Karate? I'm afraid his time is not yet come. We can't accept it. Even a Chuck Norris roundhouse takes time. -
I always try to explain that "fighting" is stupid. As far as "defense" I explain, to the best of my ability, Castle Doctrine, Duty to Flee, factors that contribute to the level of force used by a "reasonable person" in a situation, and such. A big thing for me is the Jungian concept of the Shadow Aspect. It may be a bit archaic, but it's a good working concept. I think it's important to be in touch with and understand the part of the psyche that is capable of violence.

Technique(s) Without Thought!!
MasterPain replied to sensei8's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I use a very basic concept of mushin. Basically, just let my body do what I've taught it to do. If you think about what your toes, knees, hips and spine are doing, you'll not be able to walk.As a baby, you had to think about some of those things in order to figure out how to get away from the chair you pulled yourself up on, but after a while you just did it. If you have joint pain, caused by something in your stride, you may study and correct your gait, but eventually it's ingrained. A quote from Musashi: "The Way of strategy is the Way of nature. When you appreciate the power of nature, knowing the rhythm of any situation, you will be able to hit the enemy naturally and strike naturally. All this is the Way of the Void." -
Sonnen turns it into an oldschool WWF promo. And that makes him OK in my book.

First, respect is a choice. No social, religious, political, family or martial background can make you be respectful. You have to choose to be. You can lead a horse to water, but he'll still poop in the barn. And, I think that disrespecting someone who you are competing with is a load of crap. There is no reason not to be nice to each other. It's an MMA fight, a combat sport, not an assault and battery.

I was asked to spar as part of a BB test.
MasterPain replied to GeoGiant's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
Sounds like he needed his ego checked. Unfortunately, that really needs to be done as a young person. At 50, he's unlikely to change his attitude. -
Sorry about that.

*Slaps Forehead* Australia is trying hard to prevent that very thing. But, seriously, that is obnoxious.

Defences to try against someone who 'blitzes' suggestions ?
MasterPain replied to hertsmas's topic in Karate
Have you tried changing levels and going to a body lock or double leg or single leg takedown? -
This. Also, it is nice to see Wing Chun used full contact. So often, it is practiced by people who do no hard sparring, so in the full contact arena they fall apart. So thumbs up for pressure testing. I can make no moral judgement on the challenge, as we know nothing of the backstory and context. Can anyone here translate what they say?

The scorched earth policy is the last refuge of the beaten man, If im going to hell, i ain't going alone. I wonder how many people would have a different opinion if I said, that you would "get away" with your act of vengeance??? I'm guessing none, as those who have answered have cited principles as reason.

No matter how you slice it, this is noobs hitting each other as hard as possible with no gloves.

Her school does not have kids with a month's experience trying to kill each other. 100% at this stage is simply a bad idea.
