Pressure Points, Dim Mak, and more...
MasterPain replied to darksoul's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Hurting someone involves hitting hard or mechanical advantage, regardless of anything else. If you can hit hard enough, you can cause injury by hitting someone in the forehead. But if you can hit JUST AS HARD at an inward and upward angle to a point on the jawline, halfway between the chin and ear, that's much better. The points aren't magic, but they do have some value. Point is, if you miss, you've still hit them really hard in the face. Of course some people seem imune to being hit really hard in the face, so you may have to hit them some more or maybe grab-push-pull-and-twist (complex torque) something. -
Shotokan karate brown belt claims he can defeat a gorilla
MasterPain replied to pirate333's topic in Karate
The major advantages of humans include teamwork and pointed sticks. This guy apparently doesn't get that. -
"I told my mom on you, Uncle Bill." Puzzled look. "For what?" "For making me stare at a light bulb, then go into a dark room with loud music where someone is trying to stab me." "Oh, you mean Thursday. Try to get a strobe light for next time, and I'll scream profanities from the sidelines." Is this normal?

Learning at home...
MasterPain replied to madtanker's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
I fail to see how anyone expects to learn how to hit people without the benifit of having someone around to hit. I say train wreck. -
Seems to me that a great many varieties of kumite are ignored. Sport rules kumite is just one of many games. I think we learn best through games, and a game can be made to simulate any aspect of combat, with a bit of creativity.

Disrespecting the Karate Gi
MasterPain replied to FangPwnsAll7's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I had a lot of fun as a kid in the adult class. It's good for you to be the little guy for a few years, anyway. By the time you're grown you'll have a good deal of experience fighting people bigger, stronger and better than you. Enjoy! -
Movie martial artists!
MasterPain replied to DoctorQui's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
Sopnny Chiba was the lead role in the Street Fighter. One of my favorite movies. -
Also, it is important to try to educate the sheep, and not simply be contemptuous of them. What? Don't tell me you've never yelled condescending things at the victim in a horror movie.

Team America expressed a similar sentiment, though it is too dirty a metaphor to print here.

Is there any kind of spiritual practice that doesn't involve some level of blunt force trauma? If anyone says "yes", I'll call shinannigans.

I'd rather have a claw hammer.

Home Study Courses (don't laugh!)
MasterPain replied to survivalist's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Often you can find backyard FMA groups that are likely cheaper than a home study course, with people who may be willing to meet at your house. I think any decent home study would require that you at least have a training partner, as a belt system should involve partner drills. If I may ask, where are you? Maybe someone can help. -
A couple examples from different parts of the world. Anyone know anything about the history of this tradition?

BJJ in NY Post

Great job doing as much as needed and no more. I hate to see all the racial stuff in the comments, especially when there are people of the same race standing ready to help. -
Nice! Thanks.

Yeah, 30 miles from me, they have 6 feet worth of an aisle, and if you're lucky, there's wasabi powder.

How wide is the "Asian Food" section at your local supermarket?

I don't think they do much good, but many tournaments require them.
