  1. While I encourage and train the escape mentality, I feel there should always be training to re-engage effectively. Separation can be used to re-engage to a more dominant position, weapon deployment, to make better use of aspects of the environment, ect. As someone who is short and heavy, and hopefully someday- old, I may need to injure an attackers mobility before escape is a viable option. Also, I could be defending someone less mobile. Some of my training partners are law enforcement, who's job will require that they control the situation. In that, I feel that all options should be trained, with escape taking high priority when feasible.
  2. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yvB4VvF-1o0 This is why we don't see Chi blasts in MMA.
  3. I thought I sensed a Kenpo background. Master Ken is a black belt under Jeff Speakman. http://kiaikick.com/tag/enter-the-dojo/
  4. You're doing great. Don't feel bad. The main thing I've seen is that you need to relax more. Keep working, it's a lifelong trip.
  5. Since when are strength and honor mutually exclusive? Are the people who's job it is to protect law and order without strength and honor? Are the weak meant to be subjugated by the strong? Should my 60 year old parents be at the mercy of anyone 20 years old and strong? Should small women be at the mercy of large men? Does honor amount to a pinch of crap when your family is under attack? You are confusing real world combat for fairness in hierarchical combative sport.
  6. A ninja turtle had it, what more reason do you need. Likely custom made. Find someone who does leather work in your area and tell them what you want. Maybe start with a tack shop.
  7. I've done a couple mma fights. Immediately after I wanted my mommy.
  8. Brains are overrated. Unless you're a zombie.
  9. Yo. Welcome aboard.
  10. Exactly. This is what I was getting after. As advanced as we are, there will always be something primitive in our natures. It's why martial arts will never be obsolete. Humanity will always have conflict and violence. The primitive drives of man will always outweigh reason on occasions. As a species, we arrogantly consider ourselves higher than other beings, but bucks in rut do not intentionally kill each other. Humans kill over things much less tangible than they fight for.
  11. Aikido is a do art, based on aikijutsu. Sparring is possible, and while not really compliant, it does require control and honesty. Control of power for the obvious reasons, and honesty because it is unfair to punch someone who could have just broken your arm but chose to release. Here's a point to consider- why finish the throw? Get your body position, redirect, capture and isolate the limb- at this point the throw is secure, so in a semi-competitive environment there is no need to risk hurting your partner by actually throwing them. Try this. Start with compliant randori, and gradually make your attacks more random, add timing and rhythm and try to avoid being thrown. Pretty soon you'll have a good sparring match that everyone can learn from. I've done a lot of this type of sparring, actually.
  12. Here is the question, can we discount such things just because they are mundane to us, or do such things have value despite seeming superstitious? Back to Drew's question oif someone improving their character by doing pushups- if the idea is to be stronger to better serve others, I say yes. Whether or not a person attaches spiritual connotations is of little consequence to actual practice. But if choosing to do so helps them, all the better. Why else do addiction programs often involve a vaguely defined higher power?
  13. I agree to a point, but I think that little voice deserves some attention. We know and learn more than we can keep track of. That's why often when you are trying to remember something, often the best thing to do is to walk away and let it come to you when it will. Another thing we have learned is the power of placebo, which would explain the benefits of faith from people of mutually exclusive ideologies. Have enough belief in your pet rock to heal you, and there can be psychosomatic results. There's an idea I believe 100 percent. How you behave with no fear of repercussion says everything.
  14. So, do you define higher consciousness as a kind of intuition and acceptance of the moment? Is kata the way you tap into it? Can I not find the same type of experience through some type of randori, or golf, for that matter?
  15. Are you a fan of Carl Jung, perchance?
  16. To me, that's a good chance to put yourself in the right mindset to train. But Aikido takes these things to extremes. There is a philosophy of pacifism, which bothers me. The art is related to and contains violence. It seems dishonest to claim otherwise. A passive aggressive aikidoka will hurt you far worse than an overzealous mma sparring partner. I've heard stories of such.
  17. The phrase came up in connection with kata practice, and it got me thinking. What exactly is "higher consciousness"? The phrase comes up in many areas. Is it being more aware? More alive? Experiencing the moment in it's thusness? Hearing the sound of one hand clapping? Once you define it, how do you achieve it? Is it spiritual or psychological? Or is the spiritual just the way we perceive the subconscious? Voodoo priestesses and house DJ's can produce a trance state through rhythm and dance. Does this count as higher consciousness? Does it matter that one is spiritual and the other is just fun, or is fun a spiritual experience in and of itself? The Dog Brothers motto is "Higher consciousness through harder contact" The idea being that we are never so alive as when avoiding getting smacked with a big stick. Thoughts? And concerning the idea of karate as a spiritual practice... Karate came from a largely Buddhist nation. Few Western practitioners are going to convert and accept the 4 Noble Truths and follow the Eightfold Path. Assuming you don't, can you gain the spiritual benefits while not adhering to the ideology of the place of origin, in effect growing better oranges by following the ways of apple growers? Or do you enter the territory of whited sepulchers?
  18. Well, you're not going to get fit by locking yourself in the basement and eating cheesy poofs. Get in there and get after it! It could be the best thing that ever happened for you.
  19. See, this is why I prefer the Jutsu. While the martial art is a huge part of my spiritual life, that is up to me to find that personal meaning. I think all of the long term guys from our family would feel this way, too, despite having very different religious views.
  20. Yes, MMA is an excellent sd art, when combined with awareness and some knowledge of weapons.
  21. Depends on how high a level you want to compete. Weapons and scenario training are not time well spent to be a high level competitor.
  22. Define spiritual Consciousness. Through the lens of which worldview are we looking? Ever sit zazen, trying to cast of body-mind? Om Mani Padme Hum chant? Serpent handling with hillbilly Pentecostals? Suspension by hooks?
