  1. Self defense. Everything else I could get somewhere else.
  2. Well, I got to go to work now, so I'll have to watch it in the morning. And of course he loses. Anything vs Street Fighter, street fighter loses. And there's never a hadouken. False advertising is bad karma.
  3. Howdy. Sounds like a nice mix. Have you checked out much of Inosanto or Vunak's videos? A lot of good stuff there for someone with experience. Also, since you're doing BJJ in Florida, you should look up Leo Kirby and go take a class. I've never got to meet him, but he's originally from up here. He trained with some of my friends when I was just a little kid, and I've talked to him some via the internets, and he's a nice guy and quite accomplished. One of my coaches gets that way once in a while and always comes back with good stuff.
  4. I've heard of kickboxing schools doing this. I see nothing wrong with it, although people will look at you funny when you tell them your belt rank in the art of Scottish Shinkicking.
  5. For some reason I do not understand, I have less desire to beat people up now that I am better equipped to do so.
  6. I ask if I can play, too. I learn what I can from whoever I can, and say Thankee Sai.
  7. My friend Spaceman Craig has the same problem, I think he called it lax joints. He trains still, but quit fighting after throwing his shoulder out by throwing a punch too hard. Just be careful and have fun.
  8. TY SO MUCH!!!! Very insightful! P.S. I -LOVE- your husky!!! It looks dead on like mine!! such good dogs! She's a sweetie and a dork. My cat is currently bullying her. Glad I could be of some help.
  9. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkUrtAwL-HU Try to ignore the slurping sounds of the doggy drinking water under the camera.
  10. Because Miyagi and Funokoshi were short guys who had to counteract to get in striking range even when in attack mode???
  11. Personally, I think camo belts are cool. Then again, I think Richard Harrison was an awesome ninja. All I really care about is effectiveness. If you can back it up, belt colors aren't an issue. I wish I was worthy of wearing Gene Lebell's pink gi.
  12. Under that criteria, no MA exist outside of military and police action and haven't since the gladiators. Anything with rules, weight classes, limit of number of fighters, divisions based on experience, divisions on gender, no weapons, ect, can't be true martial arts.
  13. If it were optional, I don't think anyone would wear it. Many traditional BJJ and Judo guys shed the gi before it was required. However, if the gi were mandatory, the striking game would change some and the grappling would be more slow and controlled, with less flurries of strikes. I think striking on the ground would end fights with less damage done, as it is easier to control someone well enough with a gi that strikes can no longer be defended- thus ending the fight with less hits landed.
  14. Being a smaller-than-average female I know I am not going to intimidate anyone. Like it or not, that's the way it is for me. I think a lot of men should realize that even though women are underrepresented in many martial arts, we are often more targeted by people looking to take advantage of others, and thus most in-need of a life of training. Part of training is simply having the presence of mind to make good decisions quickly in a stressful situation. As easy as it would be for me to make some rules that would govern how I should behave in the presence of a person who wants to do me harm, when that situation comes along, all of that goes out the window. The only view that is 20/20 is hindsight. As for that I can relay with some detail: Situations where I have fled: - when a van with no plates pulled up while I was walking the dog late at night, the door slid open and someone from inside reached out towards me. - when a creepy tall man tried to follow me home from the grocery store one evening while I was living in Japan. - when a teenage boy tried to steal my bike (just rolled him over and kept going). - when I was outside of a gas station in Alabama and a man pulled a gun out of his car and started pointing it around at people (incidentally, I am told he proceeded to put it away and pay for some gas after that, so I ended up just looking like a wuss watching the scene from behind a dumpster, but I still think I made the right decision). Situations where I have fought: - when a fellow high school student groped me (unfortunately I may have overreacted, and subsequently gained a reputation after that, so I decided not to fight anymore unless it was absolutely necessary). - when a person I met at a party in college came up to me, grabbed me by my hair, smacked my head against a marble counter and then sat on top of me (poor boy, the types of injuries I proceeded to give him I'm sure did not heal quickly). Situations where I have had the presence of mind to talk myself out of a bad position without either of us being harmed in any way: - 2004 mugging - 2004 attempted bike theft - 2002 kids from another neighborhood trying to bully me Sounds like a wise woman.
  15. Why delete dan ranks? Just promote as high as you can and call it good. Maybe start your own association with like-minded instructors someday down the road.
  16. Sounds like your looking for rank from a group that is not your style specifically, so you can do the cool thing and charge for certificates. You haven't shown that you think much of what these groups do, so why bother? Just train.
  17. If you won't say your style , how can anyone point out a legit group?
  18. Oh, the readings of threatened masculinity I could do on this ... Actually, all you can assume from that statement is that I'm a South Park fan who thinks a black belt should not be given lightly.
  19. 1/19 Dela Riva Sweeps and hitting pads. Likely some yoga later.
  20. I wanna be like this guy when I grow up. And an American from the same art.
  21. And just for fun, the story of Achilles as told by a metal band in loincloths. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vj2IGteZWo
