  1. 20 at the time. Also, I'm not from Arcola, I'm a couple hours south of it. I stay thin because I have a hard time eating enough to gain weight. I had to gain 10 pounds for this fight and I was miserably full all the time. I appreciate the critisism, there is definitely a lot for me to improve on. Anywhere near Effingham? If you're going to be, let me know. You could stop by and grapple an old chubby redneck.
  2. I train to be able to stop a threat, doing as little damage as possible while still insuring my own safety and that of those who are in a position to depend on me. If a woman was armed and kicked in my door, she'd be shot. If a woman slapped me, I'd call the cops. Same as a man or non-gendered space alien. Threats should be judged on ability and willingness to do harm, not gender, race, social standing or any other such nonsense. Chivalry is a concept from an age when wives were basically property. There is no honor in being harmed when you could have defended yourself, and harming someone more than needed is not self defense.
  3. I don't know about that. Furinji Miu and Princess Buttercup were pretty cool, and a lot of girls dig fighters. A good story can transcend demographic. How else are Bronies a thing? Writers like Asimov and Lovecraft had pretty limited target audiences, but were great. If the goal is a work of art and not a bestseller, don't worry too much about these things.
  4. Arcola.... How do you stay thin? That's Amish country, and Amish can cook. They have donuts over here that put Krispy Kreme to shame. And banana nut bread,and... but I digress. Nice fight.
  5. A romantic story is not necessarily as good as an honest story, even in fiction. Good fiction is still honest. Romance is, forgive my cynical streak, a bunch of contrived crap and often reads as such. Whatever true love is, it's not some rich weirdo on a white stallion that likes to kiss coma victims, nor does it involve 100 year old glittery pedo-vampires.
  6. For a good function strength workout, check out Matt Furey's Combat Conditioning. From what I remember, it was mostly hindu squats, hindu pushups, and bridges. There were other exercises, but those were the big 3. The guy breaks the myth of being "musclebound."
  7. Happy birthday. Celebrate somewhat responsibly, maybe.
  8. The only way you'll get slower from extra bulk is through diet. Being strong doesn't slow you down.
  9. No idea, but it probably involves a hammer.
  10. A hammer. Makes a great bludgeon, and you can use it while building makiwara and such.
  11. With the hormone therapy involved, she has no advantages over other women. Also LOL at the "tie clinch."
  12. A restriction would involve government. I don't want them anywhere near my art.
  13. Aikido took Aiki Jutsu and made it nicer. Never really understood the need for that.
  14. Happens everywhere with gun control, it seems to me. I live in the only state in the union with no legal concealed carry, ran politically by our most populous city, where gun violence is very high. Amazingly, the federal government has decided to uphold the Constitution and given the state 6 months to rectify this breach of the Bill of Rights. Being a law abiding person, I carry a 3 inch bladed knife, and a screwdriver. Both of which I use all the time for one thing or another. But I'm still at a major disadvantage if ever faced with a serious criminal. Thank you Big Brother...
  15. I think good people should train for the worst, and bad people should not be trained. Personally, I don't want to have to wait on the police to show up to clean up the mess. By the time they get there, a situation is usually settled, or wasn't going to turn into anything anyway.
  16. I don't think Odin or Ares or Agnes ever handed down a set curriculum, therefore there is no pure martial art. There is only movement and the mind and spirit, things that should not be stagnant.
  17. I don't agree with it, but it's common. I'd never give a black belt to someone who's not been pressure tested.
  18. Those grips look good. An underhook can replace the collar grip for no gi.I like to step a bit deeper than he does. As far as breaking balance, I just feel it and don't really know how to explain it. Just play with the throw in your randori and experiment.
  19. Cutting my teeth? It's an expression for beginning something, derived from the time when a baby's teeth come in.
  20. Hmm, Basically Just Judo?......Sorry guys, don't triangle me.
  21. I like these and the flower sweep, but I'll take what I can get.
  22. I'm a big fan of the uchi mata. If it doesn't work, it leaves you in a good position for other attacks.
  23. Man, I'm short, fat and bald. But I've got purty teeth and I'd like to keep it that way. Sparring and grappling I always protect my teeth.
