Very little actual training under an escrimador, but I do love me some blunt and edged weapons.

Teaching kids martial arts who are under 5yo

High mitochlorian count... But I sense much fear. -
From day one. With a focus on range control and maybe throwing and defending a jab. This is done with an experienced martial artist, to keep from degenerating into a wild windmill punching chaos.

Make sure your stance has fairly even weight distribution and keep enough bend in your knees to be mobile. When training solo, drill footwork while imagining an opponent to hold range against. Most of all, spar more if you can. Learning to anticipate where you need to be in the immediate future is more important than actual speed.

Well, for those who care, I've got a renter for my house now. This will give me a chance to pay off other debts and save up some money. I'll be able to move back into it a few years down the road. It's a huge relief to not have foreclosure and likely bankruptcy looming in the future. I had been severely depressed for the past few months, but now I have hope and joy in my life again. With that worry out of the way, I can focus on my health and such. I've cleaned up my diet and lost 5 pounds this week- just 50 more to go. I signed up for a night a week at an MMA gym close to my job and still train with my home gym when we are able to get together. Life is good again.

Not of much practical use in MMA, due to the rule against downkicking (the best reason to be standing over a downed adversary). You don't end up in a controlling position and they'll be back up in a second with no real damage. Anyway, don't count on them actually falling. Use the time the spend regaining their balance to throw a hard cross to the face.

Do Karate schools suspend/Demote black belts???
MasterPain replied to Himokiri Karate's topic in Karate
I understand what your saying but in boxing if a skilled out-boxer who won the golden gloves stops practicing and tries to get back in the game. Chances are his skills will be dulled and he may have to work his way up by starting from foundation training until he regained his skills. Maybe to fight, but chances are, if he had teaching ability, he'd still make a good coach. At some point, everyone's fight career will be over due to physical limitations, but they can still train a bit and pass on knowledge. -
Gauntlets, I assume.

What's the Japanese word for sucker punch?

It took a while for this to be much of an issue in MMA, but today you have to be balanced. I particularly remember Jens Pulver puting on an absolute clinic of sprawl and brawl against a good grappler, who could do nothing to answer but flop on his back and pray to whoever his higher power was that Jens would just get in his guard already.

To my colleagues across the pond!

Looking at the pictures on the facebook account, this school does a lot other than martial arts. How much time is left for and how good are the martial arts? Don't know. But we're talking about a 7 year old here and these kids look like they have a blast. What does it matter if Master Tanaka is his shidoshi? But from a serious MA standpoint, I have some major issues. -
BJJ is never useless. How are you supposed to stay off the ground if you don't know any grappling? They have takedowns and takedown defense as well as groundwork. Royce Gracie didn't need 3 friends to beat up Ron Van Cleef on the ground, he did it very well on his own. Personally, I find the idea of fighting multiple attackers unarmed ridiculous. Even monkeys use sticks to get food. MMA would be great if you can afford it. Kyokushin tends to focus on full contact competitive fighting, be prepared for a workout. Check around for FMA as well. There are a lot of backyard and basement FMA groups that don't charge much of anything.

It is my opinion that the quality of ads slipped since last year. I will now retreat from the football thread, before the superfans beat me up.

Couldn't tell you, but I know Taika Oyata did a lot of work with kata application. Keep in mind that Miyagi is on of the people who brought karate to Japan and worked with others to create what is now Japanese Karate, so it isn't really Okinawan anymore.

I have a different view on this. Personally, if I couldn't hand a 16 year old a rifle and expect them not to shoot anyone, I refuse to teach them anything.

What do instructors do in their "real" life
MasterPain replied to bassaiguy's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I install seamless gutter and also work for a small printing company. Those subscription cards in magazines- I print about a million a night. I've trained under and with a plumber, an owner of a construction company, a law student, a couple cops, a philosophy professor, a chiropractor, a hairdresser/computer repair guy/minister and who knows what else. -
Could be a lot. That's why training with other styles is important. Gotta add to the style genepool or it'll be inbred.

No clue on the ground. No ring control. No connection to the Earth. No hadoukens. -
Your Assessment Please

I agree. I do think he needs to work on his base and keeping his arms in better position in the guard. He was overextending and not keeping his elbows in tight enough. From her rear mount, I thought she was concentrating too much on getting her hooks in. Had she worked to get both hands hooked under his arms she may have been able to better secure position. I's all easy to criticize while I'm laying here petting the kitty, though. Not a bad match.
