  1. Well, try squeezing a fleshy part of your own body as hard as you can. When you get done saying "Ouch, that's really annoying."- consider how much harder you would have to do it to actually remove a chunk of flesh. If you had that kind of strength, the blunt force of the palm strike would be all you needed anyway. Note, I will not be held liable for any flesh you rip from yourself.
  2. Well, the past few years have been busy for me. I work 2 jobs, I've gotten myself out of a bad debt situation, learned to operate a 3,000,000 dollar machine- despite the fact that I can't even drive stick, and managed to start putting away some savings. So some stuff is good, on the other hand, I've been too worn out to train on a regular basis, along with 3rd shift scheduling conflicts and I've put on some weight to an already heavy body. My feet hurt and my back is stiff. Anyway, I've made the decision to get back in shape, I'm committed to a better diet and will dedicate some time back into training, even if it's mostly a few minutes a day solo. Also, I need to get back on here more. I miss you guys.
  3. Watch Assassin's Fist. It's the first live action Street Fighter movie that isn't awful. It tells the story of Ken, Ryu, Goken, and Akuma.
  4. I just got the Gerber Ghoststrike. Love that knife.
  5. Speaking of Bloodsport, when I was 13- way too long ago, I could do the splits between 2 kitchen chairs.
  6. I'm in the same proverbial boat, and I'm afraid of water! Good luck to you.
  7. He's a smart guy. Hope to get back up there one of these days.
  8. Aiki is typically meant for use against weapons in a combat situation. MMA is a contest where, hopefully, no one is seriously hurt. Submission requires time to tap, and standing breaks and dislocations don't allow for that. Here's a well executed Akijutsu- type technique in an MMA fight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMKoRa-FxYs WARNING: it's nasty. Not the kind of thing you want to do to someone in order to win a sporting event. Better to train sport specific if sporting success is the goal.
  9. Over 2/3.
  10. First, a weapon is meant to harm, otherwise it is not a weapon. Second, Australia has pretty restrictive laws, so look into them. Anyway, a crowbar makes a good less-lethal tool as long as you avoid head strikes. It's solid and heavy enough to do damage and the hook is good for weapon retention. Again, check local laws.
  11. The oldest known written manual on martial technique was on wrestling from Greece. It talked about the importance of underhooks.
  12. I have often envied talent, motivation, free time to train, finances to train, geographic closeness to high level cross training opportunities, ect.. But it's an envy totally free of spite, because I like and respect all of the senior Bujin guys and hope to grow more like them in various ways. Envy is an ugly word, but the flip side of it is when you seek to emulate the greatness you see in others. The courage of those who have used the art in a professional capacity to keep others safe, a drive to achieve in sport, huge reserves of knowledge and learning, restraint when violence would be easy, if only these things were envied more often.
  13. To train another 4 decades.
  14. As long as everyone involved has a good attitude towards it and everyone stays strictly within the rules established and contact level agreed upon, it's a great idea. The trouble with Aiki-based systems is the heavy use of standing joint locks that a person either willingly goes with or gets injured. Best to establish beforehand what your goal is, say to capture an arm in a certain way, and stop there. Otherwise you'll be getting punched in the face while you politely refrain from wrenching their arm from their body.
  15. It's always nice to hear a heartwarming story of a boy reunited with his blunt instruments. Enjoy.
  16. I think they are also supposed to have the blade facing East toward the rising sun. Personally I like my blades sharp and easily reached if needed.
  17. Sorry What's this "Dog Brother's event" ? You can go on youtube and look it up there. It is in a way like fight club I would recommend looking into their philosophy a bit before doing so. They don't want you if you don't understand the idea that you are there to strengthen yourself AND the tribe.
  18. I concur. Just remember to look both ways before whipping the blade out and swinging it around.
  19. What is the philosophy? As many answers for that as there are people in the arts. Is it still there or is it gone? It's still there even if it's gone. To quote Rush "If you choose not to decide you still have made a choice."
  20. If I were you, I'd message Patrick and call his attention to this post. Someone who runs several websites is likely who you want here.
  21. Do more of it. Also, look for good angles but keep a forward attitude. Never take more than 2 steps straight back.
  22. American football?
  23. 106 is quite a long time, and quite accomplished years at that. I love the old Shaw Brothers movies.
  24. Bloodsport soundtrack. Street Fighter II Turbo soundtrack. Anything by Bob Dylan or Simon & Garfunkel, SLAYER!!! Ludwig van Beethoven, Vanilla Ice..... whatever.
  25. Sounds to me like 2 different people came up with the same name for their respective arts. It happens. One instructor founds a style in the same year another publishes a book on a style of the same name? Stranger coincidences have happened. Anyway, judoka is a practitioner of Judo, not the name of an art. And how do you determine what is a formal martial art? Seems to me publishing a book on it establishes it as officially being a thing.
